Oh man, this obscene length is either going to tank me, or win me major points for being so brazen.

i really think the judges are looking for a well written, coherent story and don't really care about hijinks with spacing.   If your story is good, the judges will like it.  If you shield a mediocre story with odd line spacing, they're going to call you on it.

The spacing is intuitive with the story. Engineered for suspense. But they will be shocked to open and entry and find it's 48 pages long.

Personally...I would be annoyed if I were a judge and opened a 48-page document.

Yeah, that's the risk I ran. Of course, I'm also going to stand out, for better or for worse.

Assuming they accept your submission, of course.

There are no rules regarding line spacing and no rule specifying maximum page length.

Q.  What are the rules regarding spacing?

A.  There are no rules regarding spacing, you may space the stories any way you like.

Sounds like the broken spring was symbolically equivalent to knocking the cover off a baseball! Sounds like you've got a good relationship with your son. That's priceless!

On a scale between crappy parent and devotion to art—how horrible of a person would I be to NOT drive two hours away to see my kid jump on a trampoline for 30 seconds in a competition?*

I’m behind in the work that pays bills and I have all this great feedback from betas that I need to incorporate and somehow I have social obligations tonight that I can’t get out of. Feeling the time pinch!!!

* in my defense I drove the kid 8 hours for the same last weekend.

I realize this is a moot point now... Btw how did it go?!

Disclaimer- just my two cents, which in this age, unless combined with several other similar offerings is nearly worthless

From someone whose mom went to every freaking event, let me say I would have been OK with her missing a few here and there, especially as a teen. My kids are now 13 and 22. I've talked with the oldest about how my inability to be present at every event affected him (he is a percussionist and from 6th grade on had a million different activities and I a single working mom). He is very blunt and honest and indicates no harm, no grudges and actually liked that he had some space at times but would have been heartbroken if I didn't go most of the time.

Listen, just the fact that you're concerned indicates to me that either you're a good mom or you're very skilled at manipulating an audience. And while I realize as a writer, the latter is within you, I'm thinking "good mom" is the case here. It's my belief that honoring ourselves makes us better in our other roles in life.

Sounds to me that you're good at balancing, which is in itself teaching your child the same!

thanks for your perspective!   I do go to a lot of them.

i texted him yesterday morning and asked if he'd be scarred for life if i missed this one and he said no--so i stayed home and worked and then finished my story without that extra stress.

And, he didn't make it all the way through his routine but broke a spring on the trampoline as he landed, propelling it out into the spectators.  This, clearly, is much more exciting if you're a teenage boy than actually making a routine because he posted a picture of himself, with said broken spring, next to the damage on the wall where it hit--so glad it hit a hard surface and not a person.   And i wasn't there to see it.

I can easily see Mattrick's story breaking into 48 pages... if it was formatted like a transcript of a 911 call.

Those end up looking like radio play scripts to begin with.

It's probably how I would have approached the prompt. (Well, maybe approached it without all the humblebragging, though. Wink )

I'm frothing at the mouth. 72 hours until deadline didn't seem like much time, but 72 hours until being allowed to share stories is taking ages! Want. To. Read. Stories. Now. Pinch

How's it, Bra? Good morning ... I can send you mine by private message, if you're desperate ... Consider it a late beta ...

They seek him here, they seek him there, those damned writers seek him everywhere.
Is he in heaven or is he in hell, that damned elusive Scarlet Screenwriter! (Oh, phuck, that doesn't even rhyme!)

There are no rules regarding line spacing and no rule specifying maximum page length.

Q.  What are the rules regarding spacing?

A.  There are no rules regarding spacing, you may space the stories any way you like.

Sorry, I had to do the math on this... assuming you used all 2,500 words that's an average of 52 words per page.

Did
you
write
your
story
like
this?

I'm also pretty sure the answer is referring to single vs. double spaced.

But who knows...maybe it will all make more sense if/when you post to share.
