The way I wrote this story was miles away from how I usually write. My genre was sci fi, which I had never written, but when I really started thinking about it, I started developing more ideas than I could ever in a million years fit into 1,000 words. So I had to decide where I wanted to end, and I needed to pick the most logical and interesting path to that point. Usually, I never know the ending until I get there. This made it a -lot- easier to fit within the word limit, though, since I could measure my progress from point A to B.

What I like to do, is, I like to think up a story that is much too complicated and long to possibly fit the required length. Then, after outlining the details for a couple hours, I like to go out and drink until 4 in the morning. When I wake up the next day, around noon or so on the day the story is due, I read over my notes. A few hours later, when I realize it's never going to work, I like to start panicking a bit, maybe call up a few writer friends and freak out over the phone. After that, I drink about four cups of coffee and start writing whatever neurotic fever dream ideas are sparked by my worried, caffeine-saturated mind. By the time this is over, it should be around a quarter to midnight - plenty of time to slice 300 words out, edit, and write an awesome title and synopsis. Then I like to top it all off by hitting 'send' and soiling myself.

Perhaps, one day, you too will be ready to soil yourself for the art, Digby.

Soiling myself for the sake of art? Sadly enough (proudly?) I know the feeling.
I thought the quick turn-around to deadline would be a perfect fit for me seeing as that had been my MO for so long. What I didn't account for was that I'd live with a story idea for a long time while I procrastinated and delayed and did everything in my power to avoid the blank screen and the blinking cursor. I tend to sketch out longhand before getting down to it, but for this contest I did it all with the clickety-clack, building up to 1500 words before cutting all the way down to 400 before building back up again. I'm curious how many words I actually wrote on my way to the 979 I ended up with. I normally keep a better track with saving drafts, but I didn't have the time (one saved file titled "nyc, 5 hours left" and another "nyc, 3 hours left"). Afterwards, there was hardly enough Irish whiskey to calm my jangling nerves. . .

My process evolves with each piece. Every story is different (duh) and requires its own approach. Sometimes outlining, sometimes writing random scenes that get fused together later, sometimes straight through, sometimes yo-yo-ing with write-read-rewrite add-read-rewrite add-edit-edit-cry. Lately my standard formula has been to go to a coffee shop or equivalent to be out in the world when writing. Too many excuses and distractions abound at home. So if I leave to write the bulk of it in a different setting, when I get home it can feel like extra days smushed into one.

Thanks, soot. Just don't be disappointed if the story isn't as good as the post.

Can soiling myself for no good reason be considered half the battle? If so, I'm half way there!
