To Whom It May Concern:
Quick question, lots of folks have probably already submitted anyway... What should I use for "Word Count" when submitting? I have a couple different writing tools, they have different counts. Both are under 2,500, but are folks using Word, Scrivener, command-line word count? Not a big deal at all, was just wondering how important that submission field is as far as accuracy. Sorry, my programmer instinct rearing its ugly little head *smile* Thanks, Sutekh. |

We typically check word counts through Microsoft Word / File / Properties / Statistics. If your word count is coming in under 2,500 in another program, and above 2,500 through the method mentioned above, than you may want to include a special note in the e-mail when submitting your story. We hope this helps. Thanks and good luck!

Helpful, absolutely. I'll use Word, and editing has taken me down around 2400 anyway. So, it's all good. Thanks for the quick response!

I just read the NYC post about word count method. I have never used MS Word/File/Properties/Statistics. When I do, on my story, it comes out 2513. Of course, that counts the title page.
When I highlight only the story text, I am under the limit, with 2,497. However, I've also inserted asterisks between sections, and it appears to count those as words too. Whom do I notify about this -- that the NYC method (as Statistics) puts me over the count? I am in Heat 23 / Fantasy / ATM. Thank you. |

The title page is not counted towards your total word count, so it sounds like you should be fine. Just to be safe, you can send an e-mail to nycmmm@msn.com and include your name and story title. Good luck!
