I've read a lot of posts with varying levels of goal-setting and expectation. Some people have said they don't expect to move on but it's a success because it gets them writing again or trying new genres.

What's your personal benchmark of "success"? At what point would you not be disappointed in your personal result?

I think if I fall short of top 10, I'll be disappointed. Which means it's a near certainty I'll be disappointed.

Top 10 in your group, or top 10 of overall finishers in the entire contest?

I guess from my POV...getting on the list is a success. Getting close to the top is obviously a bigger success, but I'm generally happy just being on it.

Beyond that, the biggest success is when comments (either from other participants or from the judges) are favourable about the same things in the story that I thought were good.

The "success" here isn't in getting favourable comments, as such - it's in getting the confirmation that my own perspective on my writing is not hopelessly different from everyone else's!

I would be most disappointed in myself if I failed to complete something in a round, which I've never done. A success for me is completing something I am proud enough of to continue working on or submitting somewhere else/getting published/ etc. Placing or winning is a bonus. Adding to my portfolio of work is a success.

Overall. I was honorable mention last near and I want to improve on that.

I was ousted in Round 2 of SS and that one stings. It was deserved because the story wasn't good enough, but I want to recover from it.

My goal for the first round was 8-9 points, and I got 12, so I was ecstatic with the results. I suppose I'm aiming for the same points this round, but SO MUCH of this contest is subjective, this is almost an impossible question to answer. It just boils down to the competition you set with your own expectations.

My measures of successes for NYCm competitions specifically (not necessarily for my writing life/habit/hobby/goals/whateverthisthingisI'mdoing...)

*At this very moment for Challenge 2: earn at least enough points to move on to the next round.

*Overall Competition: to finally, someday make the finals.
*Overall Competition: to polish & sell - make back the entry fee
