I wrote a story for a different comp a couple months back. It was a very personal story for me, and I put a lot of myself into it. Almost 4 years ago, I lost the love of my life to cancer. And two years ago my best friend passed away from diabetic complications. Her husband had also passed 5 years before she did. I wrote a romantic story about loss. The main characters were based on Troye and I, and also Bill and Jim. Many of the things they experienced were pulled directly from our lives. And it was set in a place that meant a lot to me. It was very cathartic, and I shed a lot of tears writing it.

The feedback I got from the judges was 100% positive and encouraging. The only negative they had was that they wanted to know more about my characters, and even mentioned that they understood about how that would be difficult given the word limit. They said they loved my syntax and imagery and pretty much everything about my story. And it didn't place. Or even get an honorable mention.

So, yeah. I was gutted. I was ready to give up completely on writing. Or at least stop entering contests and/or sharing anything I wrote. If I hadn't already paid the entry fee, I would not have even written for Flash. But I did,  and then messed up and got a DQ in round 1 Disapprove At that point I definitely wanted to "chuck it in the f**k-it bucket". But I didn't, and wrote for round 2, and managed to get my 1st ever placement. Just a few points, but enough to keep me going for a bit longer.

Hey, I'm happy for you that you received points on your latest submission. I've washed out with nothing on a few occasions, and sometimes I've felt gutted about it (at other times, I shrug and move on without a second thought). Many of us know how disheartening it can, all the more so if you've got an emotional tie to a piece. Also, sorry for all of your losses.

I'm glad you didn't give up, and not only that, you fought back after a DQ and just wrote because you were moved to write. For the challenge. For the creativity. Because it was something to do. Because you've paid the entry fee already. Whatever the reason, you did it. Sometimes, just producing and submitting is a victory, but it's nice that the judges also recognized you.

Last year, I placed in Flash so unexpectedly. It was one of the BEST days I had in the entire year (and this was a year when my youngest graduated and moved off the payroll and my husband and I took an empty-nester trip to Europe, AND placing in Flash still felt evenmore amazing than all of that maybe because it was a personal victory).

Good news in a writing competition can feel amazing and validating. Please carry around that feeling!

I just realized it is entirely possible I will lose power this weekend due to winds inland from Hurricane Ophelia, so this should add to the challenge! Charging up all auxiliary power packs!

I'm so glad you're pushing through and continuing to write. Have you thought of publishing your love story about loss somewhere? I'm sure your contemplative thoughts on what you've learned would really help a lot of people process their own loss.

It is so hard to know what judges are looking for in a contest or agents or even just readers! It's all so, so subjective and the timing has to hit just right.  That's why people like Van Gogh don't do well at one point in history, but then the public catches up with him. There's a Dr. Who clip where the Doctor brings Van Gogh to the future and lets him see his work in a museum and an art curator complimenting his work as the greatest - it's so powerful.

And in "Yesterday" the movie about the Beatles music being forgotten by all but one failing musician? There's a scene where he's playing "Let It Be" for his parents and they are trying to be nice but just not getting how great of a song it is...

I guess what I'm trying to say to you and anyone else reading this, including myself, is that these judges have a job and it isn't easy but it doesn't define our work or our abilities. If writing brings us joy and if we have something to say we should keep at it.

I'm illustrating a book for someone and I've never had to please anyone else before and it's hard! But, her pressure and input is making my output much better. It's helping me see how important the beta process and the feedback process can be.

So glad you pushed through and got a few points of acknowledgement!  The story I liked so much better placed behind the story I thought was just okay.... oh well!

Guess my post didn't go through yesterday. If this is a double post, please ignore.LOL

Congrats to everyone getting points and congrats to everyone writing this weekend!

Happy to be writing again! Our group ended up being tight. (My 70s story scored lower that my first first. Happy to recognize some stories from our group.) Enjoyed my lengthy judge comments. The most in-depth ones ever, maybe?)

So after joining the NYCMidnight tie conversation the other day, was in an actual score tie and made it to second place because of the discussed rule. I'll take it! :)

So sorry for the hard years and judges and glad you will keep fighting the good fight. Personally, I always think about the article I read a few years ago where I frustrated writer sent the first chapter of Moby Dick to a bunch of publishers as a test and it got rejected by all of them. Not sure if there rejection or their failure to notice it was Moby Dick got to me more, but I have always remembered that and used it as a grain of salt when the Judges seem particularly snotty.

Congratulations on placing and keep it up.

Round 1 12th (4 points)
Round 2 10th (6 points)

Not moving on, since the top 5 in my group ranged from 22 or 23 points up to 29. As someone else said in this thread, I will need a weaker group next time!!

Congrats to all who are moving on - good luck this weekend!

Eek!! This is exciting!! I remember how you stressed over this story!!! Good luck in the 500. And next time you're just going to be a 30 so don't worry about being in a weaker group.
