Haha jinx! My suspense has decided it would rather be a magical realism drama with mystery undercurrents. Stories are such pesky things - why can't they just do what they're told?

It's also the interaction with existing science and all the chaos adapting to new technology causes.

I'll also add that futuristic sci-fi often makes a commentary of some sort on our present society. It doesn't have to and certainly doesn't always, but that's a pretty common theme, so if you're future inclined but stuck for ideas, that might help?
Agree with this  - my prompts are Sci Fi/Biological clock/Valedictorian and I'm writing a story about someone who's assigned life span is ticking away and their in the last three weeks of their state determined life span as one of the measures to stop humans destroying their new planet like they did the old one.

Ooh, this sounds cool! I hope you'll share it! I'd love to read it.

I have about 500 words of mildly humorous sci-fi, which would be fine if I wasn't meant to be writing horror.

Well, I've gotten to about 900 words. I still don't like my story but something is better than nothing at this point, I guess. Confused

After 5 days of struggling I finally have a 3rd draft of my story. It's sort of a mystery with a touch of comedy and a life lesson at the end so I'm not sure what you would call that 😂 I'm at 2400 words after working 2 days solid on it. I've reached the point where I'm nitpicking everything, so I'll probably call it a night and reach out to a beta in the morning.

Good luck everyone

Mine too!! It's kind of my own fault for wanting to stay in the world I created for MF250 but yeah, I hope the judges are into magical realism and climate change with a generous sprinkling of horror! I've got a detective-ish character but feel like the story is much bigger than the challenge allows. So I'm 1300 words in but a good 500 of them is outlining everything that I want to happen - I feel like it could easily be 5000 words, if not more!

I'm so glad I'm not the only one to start a bit later - I only started last night, before that I had about 20 words and an idea.

I'm cheering you on from here!

I posted about 5 minutes ago in response to this - I hit 'Reply' and everything! - but it still ended up in the main thread! Confused

But, in response to your post - essentially, me too!

Hello everyone!

Wow, finally got an idea (started to give up) and a first draft as of an hour ago. I was feeling despair with 2315 words .... somehow thinking it needed to be 3500 words, and how the hell was I going to expand my story another 1200 words??

But HA!! It's 2500 words .... and now hope has returned.  3 full days plus Saturday for revisions/edits/beta readers.

Thanks to all who are posting. The comments have kept me laughing and trying!
