Because I can't help myself...

Added another value: absolute change. In the current change column, if someone goes up 4 and someone goes down 4, those changes cancel out (but do figure into the std dev). So it's good for tracking movement of the group ranks, but not movement within a group.

Absolute change measures a change without the plus or minus--only the magnitude of change. Thus someone dropping 10 points would have an absolute change of 10. Looking at this number helps to measure volatility within the 5 advancing scores.

I also ranked from least volatile to most volatile. And this was quite the spread. Groups that had very little average swing, like 28, were actually quite volatile.

Group Average absolute change from 1 to 2 +/-
29 1.60 1.82
9 2.00 2.35
25 2.00 1.58
12 2.20 1.79

21 2.40 2.88
24 2.40 1.14
7 2.80 1.48
13 2.80 1.92
18 2.80 2.39
11 3.00 3.74
20 3.00 2.45
14 3.20 2.49
2 3.40 2.79
15 3.80 2.39
3 4.00 3.54
4 4.00 5.05
17 4.00 4.24
10 4.20 3.90
23 4.20 4.02

This is interesting, and what I have been thinking about (though hard to really grasp since only two submissions were posted for my group). I thought my 2nd try was better than my first, and looking at both they have the same problems (i.e., "it's not a full movie" and I did not dig into things as I should have), but seems it wasn't an issue for the rom-com as much as it was for the thriller.

Thank you for your analysis.

Did you notice that someone in Group 19 made the cut with 15 points by coming in first in Round 1 and then whiffing on Round 2?

Yes. And that someone in Group 26 did the same but didn't advance. Which has got to suck, even if it was my group and it made it easier for me to advance.
