I’ve just started putting my flash fiction up online, and will be adding comics and self-published novels to the list with varying degrees of speed. But, I feel like I don’t know how to promote my work and get myself out there. Everyone on here seems to be stunning at writing, and I can only assume making billions as successful authors, and I was hoping I could get some tips? Or we could commiserate together, that works too! ;p

If anyone’s interested, my work can be found at http://www.dreamingtales.com Why, yes, I can spell ‘shameless self-promotion’, why do you ask?

Is anyone else out there just starting out? Do you think self-publication is a good idea or a terrible mistake? Let’s talk about writing, and finding people to read our musings and worlds.

This worked for me in a photography contest, so it would work just as well trying to flog your own work.

The contest was one of those where your work is voted on to decide the winner, I won.

So, after making up a few email addresses I got to work.

You need to find forums, such as an RV traveler forum, which I found was pretty productive - most are old people with tender hearts - I would identify with whatever forum group it was, eg: Slipstream Owners, and tell them I needed other Slipstream owners support, and they voted.

Next I hit gay sites.  Both sides, as they could not see me, but the trick there was to pretend that I was trying to support a friend, they seemed much more receptive to that - it was pretty easy to sound gay on the forum, I actually enjoyed it, they are a nice group of people, quite friendly.  Lots of votes.

The prisoner forums were not too productive, I had to pretend I was a young woman and they all wanted something out of the deal, some of it was quite shocking.

The "looking for birth parents" sites were hit and miss.  I actually got barred from some of them when I pretended to be a parent looking for a son or daughter.

So, pick your groups and get busy!     GOOD LUCK!

Y'all might find this thread helpful, I did:

This book, "The Indie Author Mindset," while simple in many ways, helped me think it through:

I've  decided that, for me, what I've learned to call "Independent Publishing" is the way for me. So I'm gearing up for website, Kindle publishing, social media marketing, etc., etc.

Best of luck to anyone also on this road (journey? highway? jungle path?)

The best part was you might also try Amazon! Wink

I don't know for me, I'm planning on trying traditional 1st and if that totally bombs, then I'll self-publish. I think both options have a lot of pros and cons.

I'm doing the same right now.  My artist and I are getting ready to launch a Kickstarter campaign for our Christmas themed comic - http://southpolesantaclaus.com  Hopefully I'll be able to share a SUCCESS story in a few months.

I've used social media, but am about to start advertising on Instagram and Top Web Comics to draw attention for the Kickstarter.  The book that has been the most helpful to me is called 'Unnatural Talent' by Jason Brubaker a comic artist/writer.  He goes into everything and even has a list of sites he's used for publicity, printing, mailer lists, etc.

I laughed out loud at the addendum. Truly cannot tell if the original post was satire or not.
