The screenplay writing software does most of the heavy lifting on basic formatting. I use Trelby which is free. It's pretty good. Good luck -- I know you will have a lot of fun!

Great, thanks for letting me know, SumFemina. I’ll check it out. 😀

Oh, I’ll be there. Wouldn’t miss it! The 12-page 8-day parameters is going to be refreshing! I’m itching to get those prompts. I’ve been spending my free time manifesting my ideal genres, and brainstorming how I could tackle the dreaded genres.

Great to see all the new screenwriters here! I first hopped into this contest 3 years ago when I had only picked up screenwriting a few months before. My first script I ever finished was in this contest. I was already hooked on screenwriting, but this contest sealed my fate. It’s a blast. The feedback you receive in the forums if you post your story is invaluable (I highly recommend posting it, if you’re ever hesitant to put yourself out there. Just do it!). I wish more folks were involved with the forums!)

Sauve’s tips are great! And I saw someone else mention that the programs do the basic formatting for you—lots of free options out there.

If I can offer up one tip: be as concise as possible with scene and action descriptions. 3-4 lines tops. If you need two sentences to explain what something looks like, can you condense it to one? Can you use one word that says the same thing as three? When it comes to screenwriting, space is a premium, especially when it comes to 12 pages. Fewer words means more room for story, oddly enough LOL

Can’t wait to read everyone’s stories!

I'm in for sure - also looking forward to having more time to write something.

I second Suave and Nick's comments - the forum is an incredible place to learn - reading screenplays which have placed highly has helped me so much.

Hey Alex! I take it you got asked to sit this one out? The good news is they are thinking of just making it for a year or two, which I can understand. Plus, you can enter all the others.

I am bummed I won't get to read your entry - I always look forward to it.
Hopefully they decide it's just a thing where you sit out for a year.

I'm not a fan of the new rule, as your scripts are always a joy to read, and I ultimately learn something about screenwriting from them, and you have always been nothing but generous in the forum feedback. I look forward to when you'll be back for future competitions.

Total newbie here. Is screenwriting software absolutely necessary? (I've been eyeing Trelby per rec here...don't want to invest $$$ into software if I end up terrible at writing screenplays!) Can this challenge be done in Word, or will that scream clueless novice?

I don't believe you would want to do this in Word. Unless you're feeling exceptionally brave. And happen to be a wizard at formatting. And a fan of reinventing the wheel...
