Ha ha, that's true. I'm not feeling inspired either. I've had mixed results with ghost. Not really my fave.

Well, I've pulled Sci-Fi for the first time ever, and I'm going to be at a craft show all day tomorrow with very little time to write. I always do a lot of research for my stories, but SCI-FI? How will I ever find the time? Gahhhh. Update: Somehow I forgot this was a 48-hour contest, not a 24-hour one. So that was some fun pressure.

Hi all! I’m a newby to this! Time zones mean I run out of time as I’ll be at work so trying to crank out story as soon as I can! Question… with the action - can you modify it … as in putting on a ring… could it be putting on a ring tone?

I dont know if I would push the deffinition that far. But then that action is a little confining, you need to think what you would accept if you were the judge.

Hi and welcome! The judges are open to creative interpretations of the prompts. So as long as the action of putting on a ring is happening in the story, you'll be fine. What kind of a ring could be open to interpretation.
There's a section in the welcome letter and on the FAQ page that gives some examples.
Edit: okay, out of curiosity, I went back to see how far I pushed the prompts in the 250 last year. Here's what I had and what I did with them:
Checking the time - verifying and fixing the integrity of the actual timeline
Hosting a party - two people doing a cultural ceremony where they welcome the ghosts of their ancestors
Slipping - slipping behind schedule
I feel like these pushed it a little and it was fine. Having your ring be a ringtone vs. A wedding ring, a ring like a loop, a ring around your tomato plants, or some other ring altogether seems like a reasonable stretch to me.
Buuut, I'm not the judges. Read the rules, consider their examples, and interpret as you will!

Whoa! You're fast. Congrats on the early entry and good luck with the judges!
The results are scheduled to come around midnight on February 4. The dates are listed everywhere, but kind of buried. The fastest and easiest way I've found to find them is on the resources page on the website. There's a link to a calendar with upcoming dates.

Hi, groupmate!
I thought our prompts were funny/conincidental, as the fantasy genre has one of the most famous examples of "coveting," maybe ever, (thinking of a certain "precious...") And a certain Grey character as well from the same work!
Good luck!

Hey everyone!
I got: 42 Genre: Historical Fiction Action: Diverting Word: Dull
Not bad topics really. I want to think big and of course keep it small for the wordcount. Historically, for the first time for me in doing these competitions, I actually have the whole weekend to work on this. I have often dreamed in the middle of other rounds while writing between work, sometimes at work, that I would have the whole time to dedicate to a story, imagining that the focus would make for something I was happy with. In a true diversion from that expectation, here I am with a page of ideas and all of them are dull to me at the moment. I can feel the right one getting closer though and perhaps that is what the extra time has allowed. Anyway rambling away, I better get to it!
Best of luck to you all with your prompts and writing them :)

G27: Rom-com / jeering / stump
Well, this is officially the earliest I have ever submitted. By about 5 hours. I wish that meant I was super confident, but in reality it means I am SO clueless about rom-com that I just don't think another 5 hours pushing words around will have any benefit.
Anyway, huge thanks to my betas! I have actually submitted something which maybe sucks slightly less than I was sure it would when I first saw my prompts.

Total newbie here! I've tried to do Nanowrimo for years now, but was always daunting. Thought 250 words could be a good way to jump in! It was damn hard getting it down to 250!
I got:
GROUP: 1 GENRE: Action and/or Adventure ACTION: Persevering WORD: affect

I'm stuck in the same boat. I have a couple different ideas bouncing around across multiple time periods and I can't settle on one. | This was my group too! I actually fell asleep before I remembered the story was due at 5am. Hastily wrote something on my phone but I don't actually hate it!

Grp 26 Romance Commanding Bitter
I forced myself to write something, but was not in any way feeling the spark to write romance. If only my genre had been sarcastic snark.

Congrats on submitting! That's a big achievement in and of itself. Many enter but don't submit.

Same here. Not feeling Romance. Slept on it, then slept on it again with no inspiration. I floundered until this afternoon and almost decided to bag it, but finally came up with something at least submittable.

Got 44 - Fantasy/Fairy Tale, Collecting a Reward, Stitch First time joining!
Thankfully I had my idea within 5 minutes but didn't really have time to write till today and blitzed for 2 hours to write it. Had to make small tweaks and ended up resubbing 3 times haha.
While I read through some of the other topics here I just had a fun idea for Historical Fiction clenching, would have been fun to get that one too!

I got Group 14: suspense/thriller, rattle and loot.
I struggled last night. Peak frustration.
And then I woke up this morning and worked out a story that I kinda like! It doesn't alway happen that way, but I keep coming back for the times that it does.

GROUP: 46 GENRE: Sci-Fi ACTION: Boycotting WORD: luck
It was difficult, but I managed to resist the urge to massively overexplain the "futuristic technology" I invented/used for this story. I'm pretty new to writing and signed up for this challenge on a massive whim about 15 minutes before entry closed, when I definitely should have been asleep.

Newbie at this and loved the challenge. Struggled a bit with “Scouting” but once I settled on the Baden Powell definition it was all downhill!

Group 73 Suspense/thriller Highlighting Pure
I finally submitted at about 2.30am (5am deadline here). I had the basic idea for most of the weekend, but it took a lot of tinkering to make it work in 250 words. I've DNS'd a couple of times this year, so I'm pleased that I kept going and submitted something.

Group 29 Drama Depositing Prior
My first time being assigned a Drama took me forever to come up with an idea and ended up not having time for edits or betas again
Definitely made me wonder why I signed up xD but I have a soft spot for NYCM's 250 - it was my introduction to the world of contest writing so I'm probably doing it every year for the foreseeable future. (No more Dramas though please <3)
