I didn't see a Title & Synopsis thread yet (slackers! LOL) so here you go!

Drop 'em in the comments.

Reminder - this is just an amuse-bouche to keep us occupied until we get the official leave to post stories (probably Wednesday afternoon NYC time.)

Looking forward to reading all your scares!

Here's me:

GROUP: 18  A dead-end street / Coughing / An author

Men Writing Women

An author visits the setting of his newest horror novel.
It’s the details that make a story come alive.

I was very annoyed with the "author" character (the prompts in general, TBH), so yeah, this got meta.

First time I've entered NYC for over 12 months as I kept getting romance or romantic comedy... I'm a horror/thriller writer so I am excited about this challenge.

I'm in group 28 - a river / tasting / a pauper

When the River Calls My Name

Every ten years, Vlad walks the moonlit path to the river that keeps him alive and damns him in equal measure. Tonight, as the water hungers, he wonders if immortality is worth one more scream.

Been a longtime NYC Midnight participant but only ever in the screenplay challenges, so this is my first time writing fiction. I love horror so that's what drew me to this challenge!

Group 33: Taxidermy / Scrutinizing / A videographer

The Last Frame

Desperate for work, a young Native American filmmaker is hired to document a reclusive hunter’s macabre collection. Behind the camera, she discovers the evil spirit her ancestors feared is real, awakened by human greed and hungry for familiar blood.

After 2 1/2 years (and a very disappointing result my last time), I have returned!  With what I got this time, I'm just glad I got it finished!

Group 80:
A workout / Losing / A Disc Jockey

Le Danse Macabre

A workout contest promises a thousand-dollar prize to anyone who could survive one hour.  But losing the contest may cost you more than the money.

This was my first NYC Midnight so my expectations (of myself) were very low, but I had so much fun playing around with this set of prompts! The way I used the 'scare' was not the most straightforward, so I have no idea what the judges will think...but hey, it was fun for me.

Group 29:
Isolation / Buzz / A puppeteer

Which led to:

Josephine and the Puppetmaker
An unfinished marionette refuses to accept the name given to her.

Hi everyone! I haven’t done one of these contests in around 2 years (I was quite frustrated that fantasy and horror entries kept getting the shaft) but when I saw that they made an actual Scary Story contest, I couldn’t resist! (Let’s just hope the judges actually read and understand horror! Wink)

Anywho, Here is my T&S:

Scare: advertising

Character: an assistant

Title: Be Careful What You Ask of the Algorithm
Synopsis: A fully biologically integrated digital platform could make humans much more productive. Unfortunately, it's mostly ads.

....reading over this in the light of the post-submission morning, I am a little worried my title and synopsis are misleading as to the actual story. Probably just the "Oh darn I've submitted and now I see something I'd like to change" effect, but I'll post the full story when we get the go-ahead and see what y'all think!

This challenge was so much fun. When I saw "drying" and "enchantment" I was all in. Fun fact you didn't ask for: when I can't sleep (which is often), one of my go-to white noise sounds is a recording of an industrial clothes dryer (they have these on playlists on my music app, lol). So when I saw these prompts, I whooped.

Hey group mate! I feel that our prompts definitely push towards one of two stories - recurring dreams, or twist ending ('it was all a dream!'). I went with the former but hopefully in a way that's a bit different.
