I'm in group 13 -
Genre: Romance
Theme: The benefit of the doubt
Emotion: Exhilarated

This is my 4th NYC Midnight challenge, and also the 4th time I was assigned a romance-related genre in the first round...

At this point, I'm starting to wish for Political Satire LOL

Hi, this is my first NYC Midnight challenge!

Group 18
Genre: Historical Fiction
Theme: Blood is thicker than water
Emotion: Gratified

I didn't know that the challenge had assigned genres, and I was devastated to get historical fiction as it's not a genre I read. However, I'm coming up with a story about a flapper at a speakeasy and it's been really flowing so far.

Hi, and welcome!
I'm impressed that you've already gotten over the disappointment of your assigned genre and started writing! (I'm still trying to come up with a plot...)

While I don't really read historical fiction either, it does sound like an interesting genre to write, and your idea sounds fun!

(I personally have zero interest in reading or writing romance, so I will once again be struggling. Clown)

Been assigned horror before in other NYCM comps, but it’s beaten me each time. Here’s hoping for a better result this time 🤞

This is my second NYCM competition and I got:

Pretty happy as I predominately write for children, so I hope I can make this work :)

Good luck everyone!

Group 40 - Comedy
Theme: Passive Aggressive
Emotion: Aglow

Not my favourite, but just happy it's not sci-fi again. I've had Sci-Fi for the  last two rhyming story years and I kinda suck at it!

Would be delighted to get historical fiction, as all my stories seem to have some history in them. Haven't been assigned it once in 3.5 years of NYC Midnight endeavours though lol

Best of luck everyone Smile

Good luck, everyone!

Hello, all!

Group: 31
Genre: Fairy Tale and/or Fantasy

I have to admit, I'm not unhappy with these prompts. I've never had fairy tale before, so I'm excited to try.

Good luck, and happy writing!

I didn't get anything, unfortunately.

I was sure I had registered for the competition as soon as it came out, as Rhyming is my favourite and I've been looking forward to it all year, but then when my email didn't come at midnight last night I double-checked and I didn't have a registration email!!  Turns out I must have gotten distracted and didn't register after all.  I emailed admin right away, but no dice on joining late. Super bummed.  Cry

Oh well - that's how it goes sometimes, I guess. So I'll be cheering you all on from the sidelines this year, and I'm looking forward to reading some fabulous stories (and will double, triple, quadruple check next time!!).

That said, I am freaking out a bit, because I've never done a rhyming story before. Glad we have about a week to figure this out.

Oh man, I feel your pain! On one challenge I thought it was a 48-hour and it was a 24, so I submitted late and didn't even realize it (since it still lets you submit late for the feedback). When I got my feedback and it was all super positive I was so surprised I didn't place. Then at the end it said I was disqualified. Cry Of course it was one of my strongest stories. That's how it goes, I guess!

I'm in group 10 with Suspense and/or Thriller, Isolation, and Embarrassed

I've already got a good start on it, but I'm not sure of how we're allowed to put in the emotion. The rules say you can't just say the word, you have to show it in the story. But does it have to be literally occurring in the story in the current time?

Like, if a character was imaging another character being embarrassed and I described the physical effect of that, does that count? Or does someone have to be actually experiencing it?

Group 53 - Fairy tale and/or fantasy
Theme: When pigs fly
Emotion: Left out

Second rhyming challenge. Last year I got out after round 2 on the same genre so...

Actually I was fairly happy with that story, I just had too many ideas. Halfway through writing it i realized 600 words was not going to be enough to fully flesh everything out, but I only had 6 hours left at that point so I had to just finish it. Hopefully I've learned my lesson this time... we shall see!

Hey everyone, I am in group 33. Genre- Action/Adventure, Theme- Add insult to injury and Emotion- Appalled. I was pretty nervous about Action-adventure…I have never written a contest submission in this genre but I think that I might have come up with an idea…I just now have to try and have add insult to injury

“apparent and important” to the plot of my story…which is currently going to take a small miracle 😊.

I'm quite excited to do this one, although I don't really read horror stories and I never, ever watch horror films (Doctor Who is the scariest thing I'm willing to watch) so I'm not bringing a lot of genre knowledge to the game. And nine lives ... is including cats expected, or will judges be wanting to NOT read about cats because it's too obvious? Of course, cats are associated with the supernatural so maybe there's something in there. No ideas yet but I have the rest of the week!

I'm happier with this one. Clap

Hmm, I think a character needs to be experiencing it, but describing the physical effects of the emotion does make it sound like that's the case, so that might be fine? The https://www.nycmidnight.com/rhyme-faq" rel="nofollow - FAQ has a more detailed description of how the emotion should be included:

Quote The exact wording used in the assigned emotion does not need to be included in the story, as long as the definition of the emotion is expressed somehow in the story. For example, if the assigned emotion is "angry", you don't need to specifically include the word "angry" in your story as long as the emotion is being described. As an example, a character "clenching their fists in rage" would clearly express the emotion of anger.

Also, simply including the exact wording is not enough if the emotion is not being expressed. For example, if it states in your story that "he had never been angry" and it is the only mention of the assigned emotion, it would not be acceptable since the emotion is not being expressed. But, "he had never been angry until now..." clearly expresses that the character is angry.

Romance

Ugh - as a confirmed anti-romantic, I'm about to push the genre definition limits. I'm assuming as long as I meet the criteria of a romance, it could still be funny or horrific or whatever...yes? Like a humorous romance isn't necessarily rom-com (no meet-cute, none of the rom-com stuff, just a sarcastic MC ...?)

This is not going to go well.... [goes back to googling 'elements of romantic literature']

I do love the rhyming comp, but horror as a genre kicks my butt in prose, let alone rhyme, so I am already starting on the back foot... Not to mention the urge to broadly interpret what could be a rather narrowly defined theme. Talk about being uneasy!

Have had random couplets jump into my brain in the middle of the night, only to be forgotten by daybreak… but I’ve just submitted (it’s bedtime here in the UK!) and eventually fairly happy with it. G39 - horror - nine lives - scorned

I really wasn't sure I'd enter - I'm on a terrible run with NYCM and I haven't been in the right headspace for writing for a while. But I'm so glad I jumped in at the last minute. For the first time in at least a year I've genuinely enjoyed writing, I'm finished before UK midnight, and I've got a story I'm grimly proud of (although when I told them the premise my family refused to read it). I feel back on track, even if this story turns out to be rubbish.
Good luck to everyone still writing, I look forward to seeing them all in a few days.

Hello Rhymers!

I had group 14 - Ghost Story, A bitter pill to swallow and annoyed. Wasn't sure at first but glad the prompts worked well together.

Just submitted. Now looking forward to stopping the constant rhyming in my head soon.

This is my favorite competition. I tried a new rhyming scheme this year and it proved very difficult for me. But still had a blast. Worked as much as i could each day on it and polished it today until i couldn't read it another time. Best wishes to all writers!

And true to my third prompt, I'm unsure of my group number but it might be 9.
Worried now I've gone too obvious a route with my plot.

Mine is obvious too, but it took me four days to come up with an idea so I just had to keep going. This is only the third rhyming story I've written and so far my motto is "Just get it done and submit something"

My other motto is "whoopsie! Oh well too late now, KEEP WRITING"

Woo hoo! a fellow 14! I agree with everything you said, except it took me awhile to actually write the full draft. But it was nice to have the time to ponder the story's overall plot.

I ended up changing my title last minute: will many people use "a bitter pill to swallow?" like I almost did? (Which perfectly fit the story) so had a rash of resubmits last night. That always makes me feel anxious, like I maybe messed up my submission at some point. Or is that just me? LOL

Anyway, excited to read your take on the prompts and admire your new rhyming format. I contemplated that, too, but in the end stuck with my usual.

I’m doing my usual post-submission re-reading panic and now I’m slightly worried that I’ve used ‘impaired’ in the normal sense of the word, is it just me that think it’s not really an emotion?!LOLConfused  My first sci fi too - hard work!!

This is my first time in any NYC Midnight challenges. I used the Dolly angle rather thanthe "working stiff" angle for theme.

Hey groupmate! I'm excited to read yours because I love Dolly Parton! Can't wait to see how you worked it!

Welcome newbie! Congrats on submitting a story. When replying to a specific person, you'll want to hit "Quote" instead of "Reply". And... of course, the forums make it nearly impossible to actually delete a post!
