Ooh, that's a great prompt! Have you done a Sci-Fi before?
I got Romantic Comedy/Rumor/Captain.
Lots of possible avenues to go down with that. Even though I love this genre, I'm a lot more anxious than last time!

Hey, same group! Agreed, these prompts don't seem too difficult to integrate into the story which makes everything way more open-ended and difficult, at least for me. Good luck and looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Group 2
Drama A personal best A warden
Question: in your experiences, do you think it helps or hurts to stick to the character/subject strictly, or does it benefit you to go out on a limb? I have an idea for a “warden” but it’s not what you’d typically think of as a warden. I have another idea that includes a more traditional “prison warden” character but I think my first idea is a better story.
I haven’t done this contest in a few years, but my last 2nd round entry employed a pretty flexible definition of the prompt “zookeeper” and wasn’t received well by judges. Just curious what other people’s experiences are as the rules are a little vague.

If in doubt, I'd go for the safer option and just try to improve on the plot if you don't think the story is as good as your first idea. Going out on a limb COULD be awesome but it would be so gutting to be disqualified. Without knowing your ideas, though, it's hard to say!

"Warden" can mean many things. There are prison wardens, game wardens, college wardens, fire wardens, etc. As long as it's impactful and makes sense, you should be fine. I wouldn't go too crazy, but you have some range to work with.
In the last round, my character was a "garbageman" but I made him a janitor and got 1st place in the heat. There's flexibility as long as it adheres.
In this round, mine is more specific: "disc jockey." If they would've just put "jockey," I could've put him on a horse or spinning CDs and either would work.

To get particular, I’m talking about a “street warden” (basically a beat cop who doesn’t have the authority to arrest anyone and just keeps an eye out for the community) which is an established thing in the UK, but not so much anywhere else from my very limited research. I’m leaving space to explain that as a concept in the script but wondering if it’s too much of a stretch. “Street Warden” has its own Wikipedia page so I figured I could go with it lol.

So similar to how we have unarmed patrolman in the states that are more to "keep the peace" than solve crimes.
It's certainly a thing, I think "neighborhood/community warden" is another term, right?
Hey, if they don't specify "prison," I'd say go with what your instinct is.

Exactly. I’m going to go through with the idea, just wondering if there were any horror stories about playing it fast and loose with genre/character/subject in the contest.
I appreciate the help, Anthony!

When I got my prompt, I thought I might've won the lottery.
Historical fiction (!!!) A secret friendship A wrestler
I live in historical fiction. My first round story, despite being Suspense, was a historical fiction set in a circus with the first majorly famous big cat trainer.
I never thought I'd come to know *so much about wrestling* but wow am I now invested (academically speaking).
As always, writing to so few pages is a challenge but I'm pretty excited to be working in a genre that feels like home.

Anybody wanting to trade prompts? :)
I have :Genre - Political Satire Subject - Relaxation Character - A keyboard warrior
No low-balls, I know what I have.
Nah but for real, these are not the prompts I would have asked for. Not sure if I actually have a comfort zone, as I am new to all this, but if I had one.... I am definitely out of it now. Only way to grow I suppose.
Best of luck(skill) to all the second rounders!

There are several types of "wardens". I think if you stick to the basic definition of the term which is "a person responsible for the supervision of a particular place or thing or for ensuring that regulations associated with it are https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=c4520c9ea19d39e2&rlz=1C1RXQR_enUS1010US1010&q=obeyed&si=ACC90nwdkA2npcVVmNPViiSe8FMKWhkaqCM-sqyNuagnbrpFVPM0_ZwoH7P_kLiBmjD6JP8MbcCKXr8hXfGXi7anE4onh6aTTQ%3D%3D&expnd=1&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=2ahUKEwjV95-ngoOGAxWZ_8kDHUh1BfYQyecJegQIRxAO" rel="nofollow - obeyed ." then you will be fine.
Best wishes!

If I had gotten this prompt, I think I'd do a story about a keyboard warrior Karen type who signs up to a social media app where all the news is fake and the people are AI generated, so it's designed to give people catharsis by commenting/trolling without any real harm... ("relaxation" lol) but it ends up backfiring on her in a terrible way. Maybe even tie in some kind of Picture of Dorian Grey morality. I don't know. That's a hard one! Good luck!

Am in the same group. I think warden has broader uses than just prison warden, although that can lead to great scripts (Green Mile, OMG). In the UK warden is used instead of headmaster (in schools).

GR 12: Romance / A breakdown / A purist Romance is now in a three-way tie for my most assigned genre. But I am not complaining. I often have romance in assignments that don't even require it, so it's definitely in my wheelhouse. No ideas yet. But one way or the other, I'll start my first draft by the afternoon.

Have to say, very happy with this despite never having written a Romcom before.
Feel for the keyboard warrior Political Satirists but hey you never know sometimes trying something new can lead to discovering hidden talents!

I'm in education in the UK (and have been for over 30 years), and I wouldn't recommend taking it that way - I've never heard it used to mean headmaster/principal. Possibly in juvenile detention centres, where there's a prison element, but not in the regular sense of headmaster. Cambridge University colleges might use 'warden' to mean The Person In Charge, but Oxford and Cambridge have their own weird jargon (I work at Oxford - housekeeping staff are called Scouts, the exam uniform is called sub fusc etc.). A nursing home or a psychiatric hospital might have a warden, as well as prisons, streets, traffic, parks, ... and in WW2 the air raid wardens.

Fantasy - a takeover - a seasonal worker
Scanning through the posts, most of the combinations seem slightly easier than usual - which means it'll be much harder to land in the top 5. Ah well.
And @Graham Brand, this is a coincidence - or maybe an algorithm thing

In Cambridgeshire we had a Warden instead of headteacher at Village Colleges, but I think that’d be shaky ground for this comp!

I'm in Group 12 too! It's great to finally be in a group with someone else in the forums, feels like it's been years, haha! I was pretty devastated with this genre, not going to lie. I've written one Romance before, so this is also now tied for my most assigned genre, but this is still so out of my comfort zone. But here we are. Round 2. Living the dream!

Hey groupmate!
I now realize I never got to thank you for your kind review of my R1 script nor to read yours--unfortunately life got very busy and I dropped the ball on the R1 forum. I'm hoping to be more active this round and return the favor!
But first I need to come up with a script, and so far I'm quite stumped by these prompts. Fairy tale is really not in my wheel house, and the subject is terribly on the nose
Good luck!

Question, how does one format a device speaking? So I'm in group 5 and our category is sci-fi. With this in mind I am having there be a lot of off screen robotic female voices that are attached to different systems, like elevators and housing compartments. Would I just do: ROBOTIC FEMALE O.S.? Would you even say robotic female? Or would you give the system a name? And then would I use O.S. or something else? Thank you all in advance!

Another formatting question for my seasoned writing companions. How do you indicate that there has been a lapse in time, while you are close up on an object. Now, I am not talking about when you show the lighting changing and shifting in the background. I am talking about a seamless shift, where you immediately fade into the next block of time. For example, when a character is walking through a flashback and then steps into the present(if that makes sense). I don't know if I am making any sense right now. Let me know if you need me to elaborate. Thank you in advance!

Would you even say robotic female? Or would you give the system a name? And then would I use O.S. or something else? Thank you all in advance! |
I'd give it a name or list it as device...computer. If the device is seen in the shot, list it as (V.O.) If the device is off screen then it would br (O.S.) just write it as regular dialogue and introduce it in the action lines as you would any other character. It's a character, just not human.

Hey genre-buddy! I love historical too. And weirdly my current draft has a circus in it. (And some 17th century Italian nuns...)

Hm.
I have an odd problem. I could rewrite my R1 script, tweak it in line with the judges' feedback and... it would match my current prompts exactly. I had A/A in R1, but did a fantasy/A-A mash-up. Now I have Fantasy. My character in R1 was a park ranger, and now it's a seasonal worker. Who could be a park ranger....
Getting my brain to break new ground is proving harder than I expected!!
Double hm.

Hey groupmates! Had to admit, when I saw this combination, I thought it felt very odd. Fantasy with prompts that sound more like an episode of The Office than Lord of the Rings!
However, I have just submitted, and according to my usual group of beta readers, they think it's one of the best things I've written, which is funny since I thought it was very mediocre. Either they are just blowing smoke, or I am a terrible judge of my own ability!

When I saw we were in the same group, I was so excited! Like, hey! I know them!!
I don't know if this is gauche, but would you want to swap scripts after the timer is up? I went deeeeeeep into wrestling culture for this one and had an absolute blast researching and writing.
I'm also 6 hr in the future (on vacation) so I'm turning my in the earliest I ever have... even though it's already midnight here.
Hope you're feeling good about yours!

Yes, would love to swap once the timer’s over! :)
Feeling good about mine .. not quite as much as my one from the last round .. this one could defs do with an extra few pages to resolve itself .. but overall given the time constraints I’ve had this time round I think it’s okay.

First time poster. :)
Group #8: 1.) Wrestler 2.) Historical Fiction 3.) A Secret Friendship
I enjoy modern wrestling (#AcknowledgeHim), but the historical element really threw me for a loop. Considering the time constraints and Mother's Day weekend, I think I'm pretty satisfied!
I've enjoyed this competition because my lane is horror/thriller, but this requires me to think outside of my comfort zone.
Good luck to everyone!

Hey group mates! I just submitted too. I always feel that until the judgements come in we all have the best screenplay ever written and no one can say otherwise. Then either the judges are brilliant and put us through or they're stupid just don't understand our work. Keep the confidence high!! I like your reference to the office because I ended up comedic - I sometimes struggle to take fantasy seriously.

Submitted right at 11:59 ET and really bummed. I had a lot of family obligations this weekend so wasn't able to focus on this at all. Threw something together that just makes no sense, tonally all over the map, and really probably my worst entry ever in this contest (which I've now done about 5 times). Ugh.
Group 17 Fantasy A takeover A seasonal worker
I had a decent concept, but I just couldn't get it to flow into a coherent story. Well, my unbroken streak of not making it out of the 2nd round is sure to continue.

Hello! Group 5 here! Seems like that's a common characteristic of writers. My writing experience/emotions for each round has been such a rollercoaster! And when I finally submit the thing, I've marinated in it for so long I can't tell if it's a pot of gold or a pile of poo.

I might have missed it, but no one from my group posted yet? Spy / Reputation / Masseur
Ended up writing a draft of one idea on Friday, but then scrapped it on Saturday after realizing how just simply boring it was. It's easy to get plotty in the Spy genre with all the possible twists and turns and action, but to squeeze it all in just 8 pages, it's easy to forget about character development.
I thought long and hard on Saturday and came up with a simple 3 scene story that I am pretty happy with.
