Hi Friends. https://forums.nycmidnight.com/topic8408.html" rel="nofollow - THIS POST  by topangarose is great and has served us well for ten years. But it's time for an updated version. This thread will cover the basics and aim to alleviate frustration.

WHERE TO EDIT YOUR SIGNATURE
There's a link to the Member Control Panel in the top left corner of this page a little below the NYC Midnight logo. Once you're there, select Edit Profile. Scroll down a bit, and you'll find a box to edit your signature. Your signature will show up on every post you make. Changing it will change it in all your previous posts as well.

ADDING YOUR STORY LINK TO YOUR SIGNATURE
A signature link uses BBCode and consists of three parts: the open tag (top box), the blue text (middle box), and the close tag (bottom box). You don't need to have carriage returns between the different parts, but you can.

The text from the following example boxes produces a working link that looks like this: https://forums.nycmidnight.com/topic58126.html" rel="nofollow - 250MF: My Awesome Example Story
[URL=https://forums.nycmidnight.com/topic58126.html]
250MF: My Awesome Example Story
[/URL]

Copy-paste all three boxes. They'll just be lines of text once you paste them. To have it link to your story instead of my example:
  • In the top line, replace my link with your link. It goes between the = and the ]
OR just replace the topic #. It's easier and more concise.
  • Fully replace the contents of the middle line with whatever you want your blue, clickable text to say.
  • Leave the bottom line alone.
DONE! Thumbs Up

... BUT HERE'S MORE INFORMATION ABOUT FINDING YOUR TOPIC # AND KEEPING LINKS SHORT
Navigate to a story or any post in the NYC Midnight forums and take a look at the hyperlink in the browser address box. The link may look different depending on how you got there.
  • It might look like this: https://forums.nycmidnight.com/r2-g14-signals-in-space-scifi-dnp-fb_topic58126_page1.html
  • or this: https://forums.nycmidnight.com/r2-g14-signals-in-space-scifi-dnp-fb_topic58126.html?KW=signals+in+space
  • or this: https://forums.nycmidnight.com/r2-g14-signals-in-space-scifi-dnp-fb_topic58126_post627728.html#627728
These links all go to the same example story. Despite being different, they all have the same bones. I underlined the same important part in each. You want the number that comes after the word "topic." No matter what crazy-long form your link takes, it'll be there. Find it. Note it down. It's all you need.
  • Because this is better, and does the same thing: https://forums.nycmidnight.com/topic58126.html

(grabbing reply #1 for later)

Stuff I might add here later:
- linking to a post in the middle of a thread (author's archive!)
- adding multiple links to your signature
- url shorteners
- nofollow and the character limit
- a bit more about BBCode

If you decide to expand on all that, that would be amazing!

Hi Avery - you had mentioned maybe explaining how to do the Author Archive at some point.  Any chance you could help me troubleshoot?

I'm having a bit of trouble with my links. I've successfully put links in my signature according to the steps you've shown, and when I put the text for my Author Archive in an external BB Code checker the links show as properly highlighted blue text that link to the correct posts, but in the Archive thread, the full urls insist on showing and the links don't work - they just refresh the post!

If you have time to take a look at some point, I would greatly appreciate it!

Here is a sample of the formatting I used, with a switch to round brackets (I did use square in the post) and spaces added after https: and before .com (which I didn't put in the post).

R2 (url=https: //forums.nycmidnight. com/topic62999.html)Do It Yourself with Bonus Story Love Rocks(/url) (Romantic Comedy - 5th)

R1 (url=https: //forums.nycmidnight. com/topic63186.html)Think of the Children(/url) (Political Satire - judging)

When I post it, it turns the ] after the html to a ">
Not sure why, but it's very strange!

UPDATE: I "edited" the post but just resubmitted it with the same text, and now my first three links are working properly but the last two still aren't (these are the two I've copy-pasted above), even though they were formatted exactly the same.  So, maybe it's just a glitch with the website...?  I tried re-resubmitting to see if I'd get lucky and they'd all work, but no dice so far!

Hey there! Ah, I've been meaning to get back to this thread for ages. ADHD brain bounces me all over the place despite my best intentions.

At a glance, taking your () and space changes into consideration, those look right to me. The NYCM site tends to be super finicky, though. And perhaps uses an older version of BBCode than the site you're using to check. My best guess would be it's cranky about the "url" part not being uppercase?

<did some testing & previewing> Hmm... no. I see what you mean with the replacement ">.  Odd.

I tried copying it out into a plaintext editor (Notepad) and then copying it back in. That seemed to do the trick. Something funky in there that didn't survive the translation out and back from plaintext.

Try these:

R2 [URL=https://forums.nycmidnight.com/topic62999.html]
Do It Yourself with Bonus Story Love Rocks
[/URL]
(Romantic Comedy - 5th)

R1 [URL=https://forums.nycmidnight.com/topic63186.html]
Think of the Children
[/URL]
(Political Satire - judging)

Testing them here myself without the CODE BBCode tags:

R2 https://forums.nycmidnight.com/topic62999.html" rel="nofollow - Do It Yourself with Bonus Story Love Rocks (Romantic Comedy - 5th)

R1 https://forums.nycmidnight.com/topic63186.html" rel="nofollow - Think of the Children (Political Satire - judging)

P.S. I love your work, CFleet. You're one of the folks I try to keep an eye out for whenever I can. No, I do not have a stalkery authors-I-like spreadsheet, why do you ask? Sleepy (that's a lie, I totally dooooo...)

*EDIT: ope, my code tags didn't work. Please hold while I fix that and edit this post again.
*EDIT2: fixed, but I had to break it into multiple lines to show the actual code inside code tags because finicky. You should be able to put it all it one line just fine, I just can't put it one line to show it to you because it doesn't like combining BBCode tagged text with regular text inside the same BBCode CODE text. Separate issue from your thing.
*EDIT3: lol, fixed my lightgray text that I didn't notice because of my darkmode plugin

Amazing - thank you so much, both for the fix and the kind words.  Heart  I do love a good stalkery spreadsheet!  I'm a huge fan of your work too - congrats on the HM in the Rhyming Final, and I loved your "Five Movies and Counting" short story.  Maybe another group 1st in that one!

Pasting the plain text did the trick - thanks again for figuring it out for me!!

Hi everyone, Do you usually just link the stories that have made it to the finals or just any story you are proud of? Or do we use the links to lead to stories that are currently in competitions?

Hi! So, you definitely want to make sure you've linked the most recent story so that when you comment on other stories in that competition, those authors can easily navigate to your story to return the read. A lot of us also provide a link to our archive of stories, which is kept https://forums.nycmidnight.com/author-archive_topic43498.html" rel="nofollow - here: https://forums.nycmidnight.com/author-archive_topic43498.html

You only have so many characters for your signature, so a lot of us also use bit.ly or tiny.url to shorten the weblinks. Several of us will also include another of our most recent stories - especially as you progress and forum shares become a bit more back to back

Below, I have my most recent story (MF100), the most recent one before that (screenwriting), and then my archive
