It was open for last year's final too.  I guess they've moved to doing that so that the final 25 can duke it out in whatever they feel is their strongest genre.  Although having open last year almost sent this non-decisive writer into a meltdown.

Good luck to all of you!  I'm cheering enthusiastically (and a bit wistfully) from the sidelines.

Good luck to all the finalists!  I am a mix of disappointed and relieved at not joining you, but I am looking forward to a much quieter week next week and the chance to sit back and read all of your amazing stories.  Joy :)

Three cups of coffee, 300 words. So seven more double-espresso lattes should do it. Either I'll have a story or a heart attack.

What a cop out! Why bother with a genre at all? It should get harder, not easier! Or go back to combining all of the scores from all four rounds!

I think you'll find quite a few people who find 'open' pretty hard. When you are under pressure, it can really help to have your choices limited.

I agree LG - I am relieved not to be joining you all.  Open for me would end up as None - so I'm feeling for you right now.

that's a totally sweet prompt!

was it open last year?  I thought it was drama last year.

I know it was crossing the border last year as our location, and the object was a mushroom.  It was too odd for me because my brother had just died so I had to do a big catharasis (sp?) thingy.  I bombed out but I still love my story.  Love it.

But I'm still thinking it was drama.  Either that or EVERYONE did a drama.  Which makes sense with the prompts we had.

It was open last year. Open tends to lead to more literary fiction, which can usually be clumped in with drama.

Damn it! I knew I should have gone for something more 'genre-y'. I'm literary all the way on this one.

So far, though, this competition has thrown up a lot of sci-fi in the open challenges, as well as a rom-com and even a political satire. So who knows?

Just cut my story down to 1000 words and I'm left with... dialogue tags. Only. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Back to the drawing board!

These prompts are just giving me too many ways to go. Not a fan of Open. Angry

I started out with historical fiction but quickly realized I didn't have the time to do the research I would need to do to not make some stupid blunder. So I modernized most of my story. It's over 1000 words, I have a headahce, and I'm not sure this thing is doing anywhere what it needs to or if it even makes sense at this point. Considering ditching it and starting over - that worked out well in round 2...

I don't have a problem with Open. I just think of a story involving the prescribed object and place and write it. Yesterday's one is done - turned out to be a kind of mystery, but after a good night's sleep and some wacky dreams I'm going to put together a kind of Sci-fi story and see which is best.

But not before brunch.

Good luck to everyone. I'm proud to be in the final for the first time and honoured to be in your company.

There is definitely something about these prompts that suggests historical fiction.

I have too few words rather than too many. I know where my story ends, I just can't seem to get there. Which probably means I should change the ending, but I'm too stubborn.

Posted By: Scarlet Screenwriter

1000 words is the maximum, right? It's like the speed limit ... You don't HAVE to travel at that speed. If your story is a whole in 900, so be it.

Martin, I'd stay away from sci-fi for open prompts. Just had a bad experience.... I think that judges most likely prefer the traditional stories of literature - with strong imagery, metaphors, interesting sentences, irony, even sentimentality. Not that you can't do all those AND sci-fi, but it would be tricky in 1000 words. Anyway good luck y'all!

Posted By: londongirl
Date Posted: 20 Nov 2011 at 1:02pm
I sort of sci-fied it for open in round 2. Not one of my highest scoring stories, but not bad - around fifth.

Having said that, I got the character-change-resolution judge who had NO CLUE how his comments had no bearing whatsoever on the type of story I had written.

Posted By: Trillian4210

I started my HF story, burnt out on it, wrote a 1600 words sci-fi, dumped it for the precise reasons Gregonar listed, and went back to the HF.  Feeling better but only a tad.

These prompts just are jiving with me. But I've finally got something that looks like it is worth saving and I have 200 words to trim, then I need to edit for typos, write a synopsis and come up with a title in 2 hours and 13 minutes and I'm beginning not to trust my eyes, or my ability to tell crap from creative. But hey 2 hours ago, my beta reader said it was just ok and an hour ago it was "better: and he just called and said "pretty good, um." So I might make it!

Yeah, the newspaper article seemed to cry historical fiction, but I didn't have time for the research and my hold on history is awful, then I thought maybe something familial, but after retyping different versions of the same story, by yesterday evening I hated everything about it and started over, the story I submitted I wrote so many versions of and the whole time have been entertaining family that came in early for the holiday! This one felt like WORK through and through.

You and your short pieces.  I don't know how you do it.  I can't write less than 1000 to save my life.  And 1000 cramps my style.

It sounds like everyone had a rough time with this one. Or most people, anyway.  I wrote a whole other story in a panic when my real story wasn't coming together.  So now I have a sci-fi I don't know what to do with.

Official rules say announcement by 11:59PM EDT on December 8. What that actually means, I have no idea. Maybe by the 11th or 12th...

Since I know my story hasn't got a snowflake's chance in Hell, I'll be content with just the confirmation email so I can get to reading everyone else's masterpieces.

There's still people waiting on feedback from rounds 2 & 3. No offence is meant to finalists, but I don't really think it's acceptable for the Judges to be dolling out those results untill they've sorted out that problem.

No offence to you, Michael, but I'd rather have the results than the feedback. No one has had the round 3 feedback yet. I don't see how the two things are connected, in any case. How will holding back the results sort out the feedback 'problem'?

While I am disappointd that the feedback for previous challenges is very overdue, my feeling is that Finalists deserve to get their results as a priority.

Well basically, they should doing that which they promised to do first. If they have the time to do the results, its suggesting they've neglected the feedback from the other challenges, which is wrong. It's certainly wrong that people have been waiting for challenge two feedback. Really, NYC should prioritise those who are, to be blunt, first in the queue.

Well, except that the results are promised by a certain date, according to the official rules, whereas the feedback isn't. So it's not the case that they ever committed to giving the feedback first, even though they sometimes say in the results email that they 'hope' to get it out soon.

I agree that they should get the feedback out more quickly, but I do think the results are more important. And not just because I'm in the finals!

Posted By: Eggcorn
Date Posted: 14 Dec 2011 at 12:03pm
I think the results are more important and actually promised by a date.
Having said that, it seems like common courtesy to get the feedback back first.
However, in all honesty, they could wait until the competition was over and send one file full of all feedback at the end. It never says when they have to give feedback back.

Time-wise: results are quicker. It is easy to post the order and send an email, but from what I understand from when I asked NYC about this last year, the feedback needs to be collected from the judges and then sorted back out from the anonymous manuscripts back to the contestant and their email and then "complied" by someone who retypes them to send.

And this isn't the only contest NYC runs, so...

Dear Finalists,
There's not much to say this time except all the stories are great and there are some very tough decisions.  To feel confident, we are unfortunately going to push the announcement until tomorrow afternoon by 5PM ET.  We're extremely sorry for the delay, especially with this being the final round and with so many announcement delays already in the competition this year.  But, we do appreciate everyone's patience and hope everyone knows that we really are trying to choose each winner carefully.  Best of luck to everyone and thanks again for creating such great work through each challenge.

Well, still no results and I have to leave for a Christmas party.  LG - enjoy some eggnog.  I hope a formumite takes the crown.  It's been a lot of fun, and thanks again everyone for the help along the way.

Until then, here's your writing prompt: Open/Christmas Party/A shoelace

My day just started and I couldn't care less ... I'm not in the finals ...

Put another lump of coal in the fireplace for Tiny Tim ... cold and dark enough for you yet, LG?

They seek him here, they seek him there, those damned writers seek him everywhere.
Is he in heaven or is he in hell, that damned elusive Scarlet Screenwriter! (Oh, phuck, that doesn't even rhyme!)

Not only is it cold and dark, but I have my very own Tiny Tim in the shape of my eleven-year-old son who is currently on crutches.

Apparently 5PM ET was a suggested announcement time.

No, no, no! They said 'by' 5pm. They didn't even use the 'hope' word!

Maybe they were using "by" in the other definition. Like, "near" or "around" ...or "not even close."

Well, it's a wait alright.  But no matter what comes of it, I'd like to thank everyone for great reads, amazing critiques, and a fun time.  It's been a pleasure and an honor (honour).

Congrats to the winners.

Congrats Eggcorn and Trill on placing.

I'm surprised there weren't more forumites there, with half the finals stories posted.

RWDIII placed 10th.

Except for two familiar stories, (and my own) I feel like these were the results of a different contest.

But I'm gratified I got that much of a shout-out.   Especially among the likes of you guys.

See you at Short Story!

Yikes, didn't even place. Always sucks to do worse than the year before, but I knew the story I submitted was a risk. Oh well, maybe I'll try out the SS comp next year.

Congrats to Eggcorn and Trill on placing.

I forgot about RWDIII. So three out of ten. Not bad.

Congrats, winners, and at least the wait is over so folks can go to bed and/or get on with their afternoons/evenings!  *smile*

Congrats to everyone who placed! I'm happy I placed. Sad I missed the prize by one, but there;'s always next year! Also, I'm sad the top 4 weren't on the forums. Or that they all weren't on the forums.

Anyway- Congrats to everyone that made it to this stage of the game as well! It was fun!

Has anyone actually had an email from NYCM announcing that the results were out?

Maybe they figured with all of the delay emails (weren't there two?) that that was enough...still seems like some weak sauce.

Eggcorn - seeing as how this year's winner, Chelsea Sutton, has a link to her wordpress blog where comments can be left, I went over there and congratulated her publicly, and encouraged her to come over here and post a link to the winning entry (and any of the other three that got her to the top spot).

Perhaps if "several" others of us do the same, she might comply?

LG - I did in fact receive a tweet (from the NYC Midnight Twitter account I follow) announcing the finalists were ready, along with a "bit.ly" shortened URL taking me to the results page.

I also RE-received my feedback for Round 1, Challenge 2 ("Siren Song") for some reason; that came in an email.  [The feedback had not changed.]

Meanwhile, Hotel Door Man, Bell Boy, Poison IV and the Purple Pachyderm are already cooking up some more mayhem and may in fact be appearing in a Direct-to-YouTube special series sometime in 2012....

David - yes, they posted on Facebook and Twitter as well as here, but I didn't get an email. I wondered if any of the other finalists did. If not, I declare the results null and void and make myself defacto champion *clutches at straws*

Unless you tweet it or post it on Facebook, it simply isn't real, LG. Nice try anyway.  *smile*

Hadn't received an email, so I just realized the results are up.  Congratulations to everyone who placed, and to all finalists.  Special congrats to Trillian, Eggcorn and RWDIII, you're awesome guys!  Also kudos to everyone who posted on the forum and took time to read other writers work with great generosity.  It's been great!  See you all next year (or maybe short story if I have time).
