Hello all!

I love seeing an increase of new folks being active in the forums. Us Old Skool kids will tell you that the forum is the best part of this contest. However, as always, when new folks come on board, and especially on a Stone Age platform like this, it's not always intuitive to navigate and can become a bit of a free for all.

So, here's a list of tips and resources to help make your life a little easier.

  1. Do not post your story until we get the "All Clear" email from NYCm. This is not the submission acknowledgement you get after submitting, but comes a few days later.

  2. Do not post your story in the "Creative Writing Corner" forum. This is a public forum, and if you are looking to try to submit your story to magazines afterwards, it will count as being "published." Make sure to use contest-specific subforum--these are only accessible to registered users.

  3. A great resource on when, where, and how to post can be found http://forums.nycmidnight.com/this-is-for-all-you-new-people_topic12975_post148354.html" rel="nofollow - here .

  4. The contest-specific subforums ("Contest Name Year Review") are technically for story postings only. Beta requests go in the "Private Forum." The idea behind the Private Forum is to keep the beta lists, which have people's email addresses on it, in a registered-user-only area of the forum. All other topics - feedback conversations, writing conversations, progress reports, discussions on craft or the contest experience, belong out here in the "Creative Writing Corner" forum. The reason is that once stories start getting posted, these other type of conversations will get lost in the review forum and the engagement in these conversations will decrease.

  5. Once you get the all clear email and post your story, don't forget to put a link to the forum post (not directly to the story!) in your signature. This will make it easier to get returns reads. http://forums.nycmidnight.com/fix-your-signature-video-tutorial_topic15331.html" rel="nofollow - Here's a great tutorial with video on how to do it. http://forums.nycmidnight.com/how-to-add-a-link-to-your-signature-new-easy_topic59545.html" rel="nofollow - Here's another very easy step-by-step post on how to do it.

  6. Typically, what you put into the forums is what you get out of it. Yes, people who have been around a while and who are active in the forums tend to get a lot of reads. However, just sitting around waiting for people to read your story isn't going to get you reads. The more stories you read, the more returns you will get. No one "owes" anyone a return read, and everyone has their own limits on time, however I've found about a 70% return rate. Active forum members are more likely to do return reads.

  7. Post early. With so many contests, forum activity is the highest in the first couple of weeks posting. After that, people tend to move off onto other things, and then maybe come back on results day. If you post late, you are likely to get low engagement.

  8. Historically, peer review has been used as a workshopping space for both praise and constructive critique. There seems to be a trend lately of only giving positive feedback, however you'll find some of the older crowd will still offer thoughts on how a piece might be improved.  Again, you don't owe anyone constructive criticism, but if an author notes in their post the kind of feedback they are looking for (or not looking for), respect that. And give that guidance on your own post if the kind of feedback you receive matters to you.

  9. Have fun. Be kind. Learn something. This forum is filled with really awesome folks and I know I always learn something every contest. (It's why I keep paying the fee!)

  10.  If your story requires a content warning, please do put it on the post. Use the "spoilers" function to hide it for those who don't need them. How to do that is in the post linked in point 3. Not everyone needs CWs and sure we don't get them on all literature, but if you can do the kindness and avoid sending one forum-mate into a PTSD spiral, why wouldn't you?

  11. In order to reply directly to someone's comment in a topic, use the "Quote" button located at the top right hand side of their comment. This will open a new comment box that includes the string needed to show the quoted text. The "Reply" button will simply add a new comment to the topic, it does not reply directly to any specific comment.

  12. You can anonymously "thank" people for their post or comment up in the righthand corner. A lot of people will thank people for their story share comment after they read the commenter's story. It's an easy way to keep track of who you've done a return read for.

  13. You can follow or unfollow a topic by clicking "topic options" on the upper right side of the post. When you leave a comment the forum defaults you to "following" that thread. The next time someone comments, you will get an email notice. However, you will not get additional emails for that specific topic until after you visit the forums again. This helps avoid a build-up of 50 email notices if a topic is hot and you haven't had a chance to log back in a see what folks are saying yet. Once you log in, you will again get a notice for that topic after the next comment is posted.

  14. In Classic Mode (not on Mobile) if you scroll alllll the way down to the bottom of the page there is a dropdown menu called "Forum Permissions." It tells you what you can do in a particular forum. In most cases you cannot delete comments on threads. You can edit them, which is why you will occasionally see a blank comment box or a "nothing to see here" comment.

Veterans, feel free to add your own advice. Newbies post questions.

I'm looking forward to reading some awesome stories in a couple days!

****EDITED TO ADD*** I will occasionally come through and update with tips people are adding on the thread so that we are capturing them in the OP as well. :)

Super helpful!

Two tiny tips to add:

1. You can also anonymously "thank" people for their post, as 8 people have done for Nod with this post. When I post a story, I like to track the return reads I've done. So everytime I return read, I thank the person for leaving a comment and then click over to their story. But I don't thank someone until I'm ready to read theirs (so I can keep track where I am with the list). When I've thanked everyone, I know I'm done with my returns. :-)

2. You can follow or unfollow a topic by clicking "topic options" on the upper right side of the post.

SAME. Thanks so much, Nod! Excited to see folks' R2 stories, and especially timely with MF100 R1 right around the corner, too.

LOL I think that's a popular trick and a helpful one. My old lady brain would never remember where I had left off in returns (especially once I get up to multiple pages of comments) without the "thanks tracking method!"

However, as I mentioned in the OP, this platform is geriatric and occasionally will glitch and fail to send you a notice. I've gone away for a few days and come back to find like a 1/2 dozen reviews on my story that I knew nothing about. <shrug>

I think much of this is a repeat of what can be found in the posts I linked in point 3 & 5, but more info is always better than not enough. Thanks for connecting it!

You're absolutely right! I'm currently reading the posts you linked now! I wish there was a way for the info posts to be pinned so dunces like me don't swoop in to be redundant! LOL But, like you've mentioned, this forum is an antique.

Oh, MM you are gem for posting this. For all those that are newer side to NYCM -  WELCOME!

1. I just wanted to underscore the value of MM's thoughts about feedback. It is incredibly helpful to include guidance of what feedback you are looking forward when posting your story. I always include a disclaimer that I'm a critical feedback junkie and welcome folks to really spotlight what resonates and what doesn't. The amount of critical feedback has helped strengthen my work far more than what any judge has said to me good/bad. But if you this is not your cup of tea (and that's A-OK!), it is wise to say so upfront, so those that are reading your story don't inadvertently step on your toes and hurt feelings.

2. Being critical does not mean that you are not being nice! There is a very lovely way to frame your thoughts without annihilating the author. This forum is filled to the brim with the sparkliest of folks who are eager to soak up your words. Kindness goes SOOOO far.

So freakin' excited to read y'alls work. This is one of my favorite comps of the year and I'm giddy over here with anticipation. HAVE FUN!

This is such a great discussion because I too have noticed that there’s a trend on this board toward only positive feedback. I’ve only been hanging out here for two years and have noticed this shift.

But I’m with you @sfuji in seeking out critical feedback as it has helped me grow tremendously as a writer. And an extra thank you to @Nod/MM, who executes the sandwich approach to feedback so well and is so generous with her time and expertise.

I appreciate the mention that being critical does not mean one isn’t being nice. Generally, it takes more time and effort to be critical, and I truly appreciated those who’ve gone the extra step to share what, in their opinion, could be make my story stronger.

And finally, I have learned that a story that receives nits and crits may still be a great story! I once had political satire, and although I thought my story was funny, it got lots of crits about things I could’ve done better. My best beta friend at the time didn’t like how I’d structured the piece and didn’t appreciate the humor. There were lots of things I wanted to improve, so I had low expectations overall. So imagine my surprise when it came in first? It was definitely a lesson learned that just because a story could be better, doesn’t mean it won’t do well.

@QuinnieB

Of course, positive feedback is incredibly important and, when I have received nits and crits, it’s paired with positive comments.

And it is a big deal to just post a story, especially when you’re starting out. So kudos to all those newbies who have been brave. For the veterans, it can still be hard to put our work out there. Good job everyone willing to share.

I don't want this to devolve into a huge back and forth about feedback (as the intention was general help on forum navigation) but I absolutely agree, and even mentioned in the OP, that everyone is looking to get different things out of the forums. So, adding a disclaimer on what a writer is hoping to achieve by sharing in their post is super helpful!

Not my intention either. :) Just offering a different perspective. If it's not helpful, I'll delete, as I'm definitely not someone who has been here long term.

@QuinnieB, Thank you for sharing your thoughts. All voices and perspectives are valuable and welcome here. I agree that positive feedback is crucial and it shouldn’t be replaced by constructive criticism. And, of course, different people want different things out of the forums. I hope all of us get the experience that we seek.

Great tip! I've never had a good method for tracking, so this is great! Sometimes I just end up with a whole bunch of tabs open of reads I need to return!

SUCH a helpful post! Been doing NYCM for over a year, and I learned a lot from this. Thank you!

I just want to say thank you so much for posting this, and thank you all for adding to it too. I have done NYC Midnight once in the past (back in 2023) but did not participate in the forums, and this is the first battle that I am doing so! I appreciate the run-down on forum culture and such because it is kind of overwhelming for me. :/

I did just have a question that came to me, is it normal to reply to comments on your story when it comes to the threads? (I did see the post about thanking them with the "thanks" button), but I was wondering if it was "taboo" to thank them with a post or respond to them? Thank you!

Whatever you are comfortable with! Some people use the "thank" button just to keep track of who on their list they've done return reads for.

Some people will reply to every comment, some will reply to none. I lean towards the latter (so I can use more of my forum time reading other people's stories), but I'll respond to direct questions sometimes.

Happy reading!

As an old school forum veteran, one practical tip I'd like to add is that when you quote someone's post, you should leave no space at all between the end of the quote and your message. It should look like this:

[/QUOTE] Your text goes here

It might not seem like much but over a long thread the wasted white space really adds up!

Bumping this, as the SSC26 Forum is likely to open in around 15-20 hours' time.

Is there any way to find other first round stories from my assigned group other than wading through every page of the forum?

I've enjoyed some back and forth comments with folks from other groups, but so far I'm not seeing anything posted by other people who were assigned to my group. Is there a search function I'm not seeing?

Thanks!

First round stories were uploaded here, if people chose to:

Each competition and round has its own master list. You'll only find stories if people chose to upload them, though. Only four people from my group posted their stories.
