Writing Battle spring micro starts today! Who else is participating? I can't wait to see what genres we get this time.

Yep, looking forward to it! 500 words feels ideal - long enough for a decent story, but short enough that the judging won't take too long. As long as Max doesn't give us the genre 'holocaust comedy', it should be fun.

Is it today? 500 isn't my favourite story length. Still, I hope the genres are interesting. I'll have to curb some of these contests. I'm at the stage when I'm shocked that they're starting.

Yep! Prompts drop tonight at 10 pm EST. And I hear you... so many contests! I feel like I can't fit in everything I want to do. Might need some blinders to keep from looking at new ones.

I’m in too. Can’t wait to see what the genres are. Please don’t put Holocaust comedy into the universe cause somehow our anxiety will end up manifesting it. And by “our” I mean “my”

I prefer the fact that it’s write one and done, the rounds over such a long period of time in NYCM is difficult for me. I also love doing the duels over there where you get to read and judge.

Genres dropped!
Magical Realism Magical Realism is a genre that incorporates magical or supernatural elements into otherwise realistic settings, characters, and events. Unlike traditional fantasy or science fiction, where the magical or supernatural is often explained or rationalized within the story's internal logic, magical realism presents these elements as a natural and accepted part of the world in which the story takes place.
Conspiracy Conspiracy is a genre that involves a protagonist who uncovers a conspiracy or cover-up that threatens their own safety, and often the safety of others. It is a recurring theme in these works that characters who are unraveling the conspiracy face challenges in discerning the truth amidst a web of deceptions. As rumors, lies, propaganda, and counter-propaganda pile up, it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish between what is a part of the conspiracy and what is merely a coincidence.
Military Lampoon Military Lampoon is a subgenre of satire that parodies the military and its culture through humor and exaggeration. This genre often takes a critical look at the military's bureaucracy, its hierarchical structure, and its norms and traditions. The stories often include humorous depictions of military life, such as the experiences of new recruits or the absurdity of training exercises, as well as the sometimes-grim realities of combat.
Environmental Drama Environmental Drama is a genre that focuses on environmental issues and their impact on society and individuals. The stories often examine environmental degradation, pollution, climate change, and other issues through the eyes of the characters, who may be activists, scientists, politicians, or ordinary people. This genre explores the complex relationships between humans and the natural world.
These are tough ones, especially for 500 words!

So I was wondering that. Does that mean that the numbers could be very skewed if lots of people with military lampoon switch and nobody with magical realism does? How does that work for the duels if you have a smaller number of people judging a really large group? I am a first-timer in case you couldn't tell.

Max usually lets us know on here (after deadline has passed and all submissions are in) all the cool stats like how many in each group, how many stayed with their prompts and how many swapped. He will probably also say what that will mean. I know a popular genre in a previous round had to add in a fifth round of judging instead of going straight to quarter finals so that the numbers could come down enough. So if your genre is super popular you have to beat more stories!

Yes! Last Battle, one genre was an entire round smaller than all of the others. I imagine Magical Realism will be a huge pool with Military Lampoon being quite small hehe

I think I'd take environmental drama over military lampoon or conspiracy. I think with drama you can amp up the emotions and relationships, passion for the environment/wildlife, something threatening that. There is lots of juice for an emotive piece.
Having to be comedic on demand and in particular satirical (military lampoon) or really clever and intricate with a plot that keeps you guessing (conspiracy) in 500 words much scarier I think!
Good Luck, you've got this!!

I agree with everything you said which is why I am keeping it. Military lampoon is just too scary of a prospect. However, I do hope I get to read some in the duels because this brilliant bunch is sure to create some masterful work!

Well, I did get Conspiracy and with a husband who thinks eeeeeeeeeverything is a conspiracy, I decided to keep it and just channel him while writing, *lmao*, though I do admit that I'm not so sure I can do it justice in only 500 words. Still, I will give it a valiant, if not entirely twisty, effort! At least I've already got an idea, a title, and a couple of paragraphs, so that's half the battle right there! ... I was actually quite horrified when I saw the genre descriptions in the email, as I didn't think I could do any of them, but of them, I think this one will be the easiest for me, so it's a go.
And of course, I'm also trying to finish my Writer's Playground story that I got the prompts for last Thursday but was too sick all week to really start writing until yesterday, so I'm only at 1474 words out of a possible 3000, and I'm also participating in YeahWrite's Super Challenge #28, which will need a max 1000 words and whose prompts are dropping as I'm writing this. And I got an email from Furious Fiction, with their prompts! I doubt I'll enter the latter's contest since it's free, so I won't lose anything if I don't, whereas I've already paid for these three... Or maybe I will, and I'll just be a total zombie come Monday!
Why do I keep doing this to myself?!

I had two people email me and say they couldn't click the "checkmark" to confirm their redraw. Did that happen to anyone else? I quickly released a "hotfix" that resolved the issue for those two folks, but just wondering how common it was. It was fixed within the first 30 minutes, so it won't happen to anyone else now. Very odd though.
How's everyone doing? Genres cool?
Personally, I think Conspiracy is the toughest out of the bunch. Super excited to read Military Lampoon.
These last 10 days have been a blur. I put in an average of 18 hours a day getting this Battle ready for the Spring Microfiction (four of those days I did 20 hours back-to-back-to-back-to-back). I wish that was an exaggeration. I was supposed to have another TWO MONTHS to get this new website ready for the Summer Battle, but out of no where, Wix changed something on their backend that blew up the old website. I had the choice to cancel the Spring Battle or crunch -- and I chose to crunch. Honestly, I can't believe we're here and folks are on the site and drawing cards. I LOVE IT.
Have so much fun writing over the weekend, everyone! And please let me know what I can improve. I'm here for you all :)

Oooh so I’ve landed conspiracy and can’t decide if it’s worth risking military lampoon in a redraw. I’d love magical realism or environmental drama - I blended the two for SSC so I’m in the mood for more! Hmmmmm 2/3 seems like good odds but is it good enough?
The redraw button is getting more tempting by the minute…
(And thank you so much for all the effort you’ve put in, Max!! I’m very impressed and appreciative that you’ve managed to get the site up and working just days out from the comp!)

Hmm. Got my least-favoured genre, but the subject and word fit that genre almost perfectly (I almost suspect conspiracy ) . So do I risk switching genre and destroying a perfectly good set of prompts? Max, you're an evil genius for coming up with this format.

I had Lampoon, swapped and got Conspiracy, which I think will be tough but is probably the one I wanted the most. I like the idea of magical realism but I think it takes a certain sleight of hand to do it correctly, and I've never written one before. I haven't even started considering the other prompts yet.
I have to finish my Writer's Playground story first, which I hoped would happen yesterday, but not quite.

I've started and re started so many times now. Swapped a subject, tried again. Can't make a full plot come together in my mind. I like my genre and I can see my world and my character but can not for the life of me connect a solid beginning, middle and end.
Prompts dropped at 12pm Saturday for me here in AUS so i've had a solid afternoon and evening on this and it's probably time I headed for bed and hope for fresh thoughts in the morning.

I wanted to make that work, I really did. I loved the subject/word and I had multiple ideas that I spent a lot of time trying to flesh out but all needed backstory and there's not a whole lot of room for that when writing satire. I even dissected some of my favorite movies in this genre and without it, the irony would have been lost.
I can deal with environmental drama and will keep my prompts. There's a lot more to work with, just have to go from thinking "how do I make this funny" to "how do I make this serious".

Finished two versions of my story before bedding down around 3am (changed PoV, for the better, I think). Though I'd like to tighten up a few things, I'm pretty happy with my rough draft. I'll solicit some non-battlers to beta read, as I really dislike swapping with others in my genre, but spend most of today on my YeahWrite entry while also mulling over the latter half of my Writer's Playground story. What a weekend!

Military Lampoon, all I can think about is Hogan’s Heroes lol - I’ll try my hand at it, see if it clicks, if not a big swap is in order!

I’m glad I found this board— I was dying to know how everyone felt about the genres!
I drew and stuck with magical realism— which is new territory and very much out of my comfort zone, but it scared me slightly less than the other three genres. Working on a draft now, then surrendering it to the betas.

I have a draft that I'm sure I'll pick to absolute death by the time tomorrow night rolls around. Hope everyone's doing ok!
And if anyone in the same genre is interested in doing a swap for beta help, I'm game!

I wanted to do a test/fallback submission to make sure my word count fit with their counter and I had an issue with it not being accepted due to time elapsing.
I’m not actually ready to submit so I just chose to assume it was something glitchy.

Technical issues resolved. Sorry, everyone! With a new website comes new problems... Having the cards "Locked In" is probably the simplest thing on the website and it somehow comes with the most problems. We had issues for a few hours after Lock-In in the Winter battle on the old site too...
Please let me know if you encounter any other errors. I understand this is a "big one" where you were trying to submit. Sincerely, I hope this hasn't inconvenienced you too much. Still plenty of time to submit!

I also prefer, as others note, that WB is one submission, and you're done, even though I love NYCM's Flash Fiction competition, where you're guaranteed at least two. Again, the duration on WB is better. However, NYCM has many more entrants. On the judging, I'm in the NYCM camp. Their method works best for me. I stay off any beta groups/Discord channels etc., that I'm part of as much as I can for most of the WB experience, where humanly possible, as I would rather not know any details/prompts/ titles etc., of stories. Since we are judges until a specific stage, I like not knowing and enjoy being surprised by narratives. I will admit it can be tough to find readers, but I'll survive. There are pros and cons to both contests. The best bet is to try WB and make your own conclusions if you haven't already.

I too prefer synopsis/loglines, but yeah, I guess we were outvoted. Still, Max, do you think it's possible that rather than firmly having synopsis or not, each entrant can decide whether or not to include one, so those who like them can have one and those who do not don't need one?

It's definitely something we can all think about/discuss. One thing I've never liked is that it sometimes gives people an edge in their story with added context... so folks that don't include a logline might be at a disadvantage.
I'm more than happy to add them back in though if that's what the community wants. For these shorter Battles (micro and nano) I think I like them without. The Short Story one in Autumn might need them.

What an insane weekend. I had 3 stories to write - Writing Battle, YeahWrite, and Writer's Playground. (Which I completely procrastinated all week on Playground, so essentially only had the weekend for all three.)
So I cleared the weekend and prepared to hermit write. Then with the first really nice days arriving unexpectedly, I had the opportunity to go sea kayaking yesterday. I never paddle out from the harbor on the weekends after Memorial day (because tourist boaters are the worst) so I knew it was my chance to try and catch a whale early in the season... so I poured myself into my wetsuit and didn't even start writing until late afternoon.
Just subbed my 3rd story, so I'm done. My brain is soup, but I think my Writing Battle piece is my favorite of all three. <fingers crossed>
Can't wait for the duels to begin. For everyone still writing - keep going! Still plenty of time!
Now, I think I'll pour myself a margarita and take my book out onto the balcony for a bit, to enjoy what's left of the sunshine.

Yeah, I guess in Microfiction a logline isn’t always necessary and can be considered a sneaky way to simply add more words to your story.
Maybe an option to add a 10-words-or-less one for MF.

I think letting the length of the story dictate whether or not a synopsis/log line is needed makes sense. Maybe make it mandatory for 1000 words and up.
It is a good way to get more words/clarity into a super short story so I don't think it should be optional where some folks get that extra drink at the well to give context to their stories and others don't. And on micro fiction, summarizing feels super unnecessary to me.
I'm not a fan of loglines, but writing one isn't a big deal if it's required. There's also a bit of difference (at least in what I was taught) about loglines and synopses so what is actually wanted/required should probably be clarified. I consider loglines to be teasers and meant to be just enough to get you to read whereas a synopsis is more of a summary of the story in its entirety.

Same. By the time I got to the last story, I think I was nearly incapable of competent word forming, but somehow I like all of the stories lol.
Well, for the most part. Im least confident about Writing Battle, but my YW story is probably the weirder of the three.

Finished and submitted just about an hour ago! I'm wicked proud of my story. I checked the preview and CTRL+F'd for my word a thousand times... maybe I ought to go back one more time just to super-confirm The form is soooo easy to use and I love it for micros! Almost too easy as it's so tempting to fiddle when I don't have to slosh through an entire new Submittable entry or upload a whole new document, but it's so great!!

I considered skipping because I don't love micros. But I consider 500 words to be flash length, so I signed up last minute on Friday and had a blast. Past experience with Furious Fiction helped gauging a story size that would fit within the word count, but it is a tricky length.
I would have loved Environmental Drama but Conspiracy was fun enough, if only daunting at first sight.
Thanks Max for another fun weekend, and beyond, once the judging gets rolling!

Welp! Submitted a total of roughly three times, with the last one going in an hour or so before the deadline. While I don't love my story as much as I have previous entries, I am proud that I got three stories done before their deadlines this evening, so I'm calling it a win. And when I recover, I may even write a story based on Furious Fiction's May prompts since I simply didn't have the time this weekend; hey, it'll still be a new story for me and something to add to my WIP anthology into which I place all of my entries.
How is everyone else feeling about their stories?

I was feeling sh*t about my idea, but decided to give it a go with 90 minutes to go.
I got military lampoon. Spotted one minor issue just after the deadline, but overall I'm moderately happy with what I wrote.
Touch wood others like it!!

I wrote an accidental magical realism meet cute in the last battle so of course I got it this time. Intentional magical realism was way harder, it turned out, especially when I had to rush-write another longer story. Usually fantasy's my wheelhouse but the story ended up strange. I am curious (and excited) to see what others think of it.
PS: Lesson learned. Do not stack submission deadlines. I am frankly just relieved that I managed to finish and submit two stories (the other being Writer's Playground - that story's a mess)

Submitted my story last night. The new submission form looks promising, but I tried to double space it and on my laptop the preview looks how I wanted but on my phone it's screwed up. I hope the judges will be forgiving regarding formatting this time around if things look weird.

Agree re form! Loved the one-step process. V clear and simple to use and found it easy to format on the desktop. Having to face the submitable process again after finding an error always feels like an uphill struggle.
I am just hoping the way I have used my word is acceptable! 🙏

Submitted with about 2 hours to spare, although that's 1am for me. As usual with micro, my conscious thought was 'Great! Get a first draft done nice and early, then a whole weekend to tinker and polish until it shines like a diamond. I'm going to write a masterpiece!' And as usual, my subconscious interpreted that as 'Great! A whole 45 hours to piss away before you have to do any work! Why have a nice easy weekend, when you could choose sleep deprivation and self-loathing instead?'
The one upside to my procrastination this time was that apparently I missed a lot of angst with the website, because it was completely smooth for me. The submission process is great, Max - I especially like the instant reassurance on the word count.
The story's okay, I think, provided I don't get disqualified for a somewhat tenuous interpretation of the subject prompt. If we do get DQ'd, do we find out when it happens or at the end? Not that I'd mind carrying on with the judging even if I was out, but it would be good to know.
And I'll at least get a no-redraw trophy, if we're still doing that!

Has the dueling structure changed for this battle? I wasn't up to date with the old forum before it closed.

Thanks to my two last-minute beta readers I got my story written and submitted with just a couple of minutes left. Very grateful for their help.

I had a draft that was 498 words on MS Word, so I pasted it into the Writing Battle form and it told me it was 502. I refreshed the page and pasted it again with no changes and got told 498. I didn't submit at that stage and was just checking the official word count but just something to point out if Max sees.
