Congrats to you all for triumphing over this weekend and whatever circumstances it threw at you. Nothing about this contest is easy, and you kicked ass if you sat down and gave it your all.

Feel free to share titles and synopses, but don't post your story until you get the email from NYC Midnight (should be Wednesdayish)

Hush

In a world buried under a blanket of silence, an abandoned baby’s cry rings out as she’s left on Mama Jacinta’s doorstep. The emerald-eyed, honey-skinned child will grow at Jacinta’s side, bringing magic, color… and something more to the land where hush rules all.

Crime Caper/ Poolroom / Couch

Nearly accidentally deleted my couch when cutting words, which is rough as I usually make the object more important lol and didn't care much for this prompt -- but somehow got it done! Not a fan of my hasty synopsis either, but c'est la vie.

Get a Cue

Plans A and B, to swap the famed and framed 5k bill from behind the bar of the legendary Get a Cue poolroom and auction it off, seem simple enough, but when both fall through, will a risky Plan C succeed? Or should we have known better than to hustle a hustler?

But when the submersible is recovered without its crew, an investigator tasked with analyzing the footage finds the research team less than cooperative.

I realised after the deadline that the version of the synopsis on the title page was different to the one I put on the submission form, and it's kind of a significant detail (I originally had the second line start with "But when the submersible doesn’t return"), so that's a bit annoying lol. Hopefully it won't matter too much, either way I'm just glad I got it in before the deadline!

I haven’t skipped a flash fiction contest since I started several years ago, so I wanted to submit something. Not my best work, but it met the criteria and I don’t TOTALLY hate it 🤷‍♀️

After getting mystery for FF last year and short story this year (and a few crime capers inbetween), I didn't feel like another detective / PI story. Might be stretching the genre but hopefully the judges will find it mysterious enough.

I think maybe it's because they fit together SO clearly. Like sci-fi + porthole, and a ready room being such a specific thing. The type of setting is quite narrow (though there is some room to play) so I think I also got a bit stuck on wanting to make it original.

Hi, heatmate! This sounds terrific! I wanted to set mine in Alaska, but I was on a plane and couldn’t research so had to go more obvious. I can’t wait to read this!

It was my first time entering (hurrah!) I was excited to get comedy - but not really feeling like I nailed it. Still, it was fun.

Group 31: historic fiction/ice house/broom

The Other Side of the River

At the turn of the twentieth century, a young man learns more than he bargained for on the other side of the river.

I’ve wanted historic fiction for awhile, so when do I get it? When I have a handful of hours after the prompt dropped before getting in a plane for Europe (losing 6 hours for the contest because of time zones) with no internet for research, and almost a day of travel without internet. Wrote the story longhand in sleep deprivation and revised with major jet lag. Just goes to show ya, one can write in the worst of situations. Hopefully it’s historic enough.
Best of luck to everyone. We’re all winners just for accomplishing the task!
