Congratulations to Shelby Van Pelt, a NYCM participant and member of these forums for the past few years.

Her debut novel, Remarkably Bright Creatures, just hit the New York Times bestseller list!

It's also a A Read With Jenna Today Show Book Club Pick!

If you haven't already, pick up a copy. It's a really fantastic book.

Ahh...thank you to my fellow NYCM forumites for sharing this! I am both humbled and thrilled to have hit the NYT list (if even for a hot second) with my weird semi-literary-fiction novel featuring an octopus narrator.

I do truly owe a debt to NYCM, and to these forums.

I came up with the characters for REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES back in 2013, and played with them on and off for a couple of years before hitting a slump (well, and having kids, which sucked up time and energy for a while.)

But in 2018, I wanted to get back into it, and I remembered hearing my former critique partners talking about NYCM. It had been a minute since I'd talked to any of them, but I googled the competition and signed up on a whim. This was Short Story 2019, I think. Doing that contest ended up reconnecting me with those folks from my prior critique group, and then subsequently connecting me with larger writing community through the forum. A total win all around.

Really, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say I wouldn't have finished this book without NYCM.

Now, with a successful debut novel out, I'm often asked in interviews about what advice I'd give to other aspiring novelists. It's a hard question for me, because I really did have luck and fortunate timing on my side.

But one thing that I feel strongly can benefit any writer is finding a community. And I'm so grateful to the NYCM community for being there for me during that precocious period where I was venturing back into writing.

And also, I will never stop singing the praises of prompted contests. There's no better remedy for sweeping away writerly cobwebs than spending a weird weekend immersed in an unfamiliar genre with a set of bizarre prompts. Weird prompts make the best stories sometimes, even in contemporary/literary fiction. I'm writing a second novel now, and it's directly derived from a set of totally random prompts.

Thank you to NYCM for maintaining this forum, and to everyone here who contributes to it! :) I am so grateful for all of you!

And I'll see you in Flash Fiction next month! :)

Just finished the audiobook version and I was hooked all week! How could anyone not love Marcellus? But it was Tova that really shined for me. The last line between Tova and Marcellus where she thanks him for saving her really resonated!

I got a lot of All Adults Here by Emma Straub vibes, which is a compliment.

Thought I'd comment on here now to bump this post up while the forum is active, so more people are aware of this book :)

And it came out in the UK about 2 weeks ago, for any Brits reading the thread Smile
