You did it! You wrote a thing that didn't exist a few days ago, out of a bizarre handful of prompts. Everyone gets first place from me just for that ;)

REMINDER: Do not post your story until we get a confirmation email from NYCM in a few days. A dedicated sub-forum will then appear, titled Short Story 2022 Review.

Until then, drop your title and synopsis down below! I'll go first.

Group 83 - thriller / maternity / a missileman.

On Wings of Wax and Light

Imprisoned and alone, Icarus is haunted by the eldritch terrors of the Labyrinth. As he feels himself falling for the sun god, Apollo, Icarus dares to wonder if there’s more to life than simply surviving.

Oh man, and that concludes Round 1! I was in Group 211: Comedy, Surprise Party, One Trick Pony. I finished my first draft on Thursday, hated it. Edited it, still hated it. Got some other perspectives on Friday, still despised it. Decided to rewrite the whole thing as a completely different story today and submitted it at 12:56. I. Am. Exhausted. But so happy with my decision. I love my new story so much more

I think the only two genres I didn't want under any circumstances were comedy or historical fiction... then I got assigned political satire. I had no idea it was a genre, and it's definitely out of my comfort zone. Somehow, I still managed to make something I'm pretty proud of!

Pulled thriller, as I often do, but still had a lot of fun this one!

Actually gearing up to work on a fiction project that I've been planning for a while (the idea for which was inspired by a Flash Fiction story I wrote last year) about somewhat similar character to the main character I wrote into this round's story, so this was a fun character writing/exploration exercise! I've just been on a kick for writing about badass 90's ladies, what can I say?

This competition is useful in so many ways :) Always something to learn, take or build from each and every round, no matter the outcome!

It might not be the worst thing I have ever written, but it is right on the cusp of not being one I will put on the forum. Horror is not my thing. It kept wanting to be a comedy and reads more like a B level pseudo thriller. For some reason I couldn't stop myself from making Bartleby (from Bartleby the Scrivener) a central character.

How funny, because I pulled historical fiction and did the exact same thing.  Massaged the prompts into a story I know like the back of my hand.  The Titanic isn't part of the story, but it is part of the history of the story...if that makes any sense...

I can explain it better later.

The really disturbing part is how very little I made up other than the actual crime caper and the "gang." In my tradition of "I'm gonna write Historical Fiction until you cave and assign it to me" I saw the "shipwreck" and ran with it. And went "I'll use Titanic, that way I don't have to do much research as I know it like the back of my hand."

[Gilligan Cut]

Me, messaging my brother who knows even more than I do on the subject: "Which crew are going to have access to the specie room on the Orlop deck?"

How funny, because I pulled historical fiction and did the exact same thing.  Massaged the prompts into a story I know like the back of my hand.  The Titanic isn't part of the story, but it is part of the history of the story...if that makes any sense...

I can explain it better later.

Consider me intrigued.

And yeah I'm not saying I'm lazy but I have literally been paid money to lecture about the Titanic so it was an easy go to. I THOUGHT.

Welp. I did not make the deadline and missed the 1 hour buffer by 1 minute. I procrastinated until today because of some really intense circumstances. The story didn't "come to me" until 5pm today, so I just ran out of time.

As said elsewhere, I got busy this week. My story didn't exist four hours ago, let alone a few days! I work in a college, and I had to grade nearly 200 papers and deal with about a dozen possible plagiarism cases in the process! Between that and my coffee shop side-gig, I have had 12 hours of sleep the past five days, and I sat down to write with three hours to the deadline. (I had my idea 24 hours earlier, though.)
Then, it took my horrible rough draft but gave me error messages for my final draft. I hope they accept my backup submission! Because of the lateness of even getting started, I also am not a fan of settling for my title (it is one of the prompts, Group 78) nor synopsis (though I am more okay with it.)

My first time! I'm so nervous.

Group 15
Political Satire / A Tipping Point / Drama Queen

My Subject and Character only come into play at the end, and are catalysts for the climax. I hope I incorporated them enough to not get disqualified Cry

Into the Foxhole

After spotting a mysterious creature, a familiar character falls into a surreal scenario.

Hah! I was debating posting, and I saw your synopsis and figured...ah, might as well! (Also we're avatar twins!)

I thought I saw a couple folks from our group posting in the "what'd you get?" thread last weekend, so hopefully we'll see some more? :D

Howdy heatmate. Looks like we took these prompts in very different directions. Look forward to reading yours (if you decide to post)!

52 / Historical Fiction /An anniversary / A lawbreaker

The Last Woman to Hang

Men had shaped me with their desires, their fists, and their threats. They were my judge, jury and executioner; they loaded the gun, they handed me the sentence but I pulled the trigger and I was ready to die.

Well that was intense, not to mention the fun of finding out yesterday at 6.30pm UK time that I had got the complete wrong theme. Reworked the story got it submitted 12:40am UK, went to bed and was so wired couldn't sleep for hours. Not sure if I will post to the forum this time, feel like my story and I need some time apart!

Best of luck everyone and massive well done!

This week was a struggle for me, and I wasn't sure I was going to get my story done in time. But thanks to some affirmation from my betas, I got there!

“We shouldn’t be doing anything to the building if it’s tapu,” Ariana said. “Especially if there’s a taniwha in there.”

A Collection of Innocent Things

The ever-daydreaming Masha is caught up in a fanciful game, imagining herself part of a story-book quest. But a strange street cleaner’s interest in her progress raises the question: is it a blessing or a curse?

First time entering. Never written suspense before and at first the prompts seemed reaaaally not my vibes, but then I realised there was a lot I could do with it! It took me a while to get there, but I'm not so worried about writing suspense now.

Mine takes place in 1990, with a brief Cold War shoutout.

137 Romance / customer / installment plan

Into the Night
A New York City teenager wrestles with her conflicting feelings and the condemnation of others as she pursues a relationship.

I’m realizing reading these tidy and quippy synopses that the genre of my synopsis is “librarian summary” while the others all seem to be “publisher’s desk pitch”

My first NYC competition for 2 years. Ah - feels good to back.

Or it did, until I pulled...

Group: 165 (Suspense / scavenger hunt / street cleaner) Smile

So, leaving all my comfort zones, I've battled up as far as 2208 words, and made:

Title: By the side of the road

Synopsis: A first date remembered in fragments as consciousness and confusion tangle in a late-night city-centre alleyway

Looking forward to sharing/reading/commenting in a few days time!
