Just signed up for the Flash Fiction! I think it is my favorite
with the Short Story coming in a close second. It is mostly
that I get to write two stories, as I never progress, haha. If
they let us do two of the SS then it would be my favorite,
like the longer format.

Yeah, I'm in. Doing well in my first story last year was the moment I realised I'm not utterly hopeless at this.

I also did well on the first story last year, then over reached on the second, sigh.
This year it is back to basics, just write the best damn story anyone has ever read.

Flash 2016 was the first piece of fiction I ever wrote. I consider it my "writer's birthday." I signed up on a whim after an ugly divorce to try something new. Had no idea what the heck-a-rooni I was doing. First challenge, I got 15 points. Second challenge, 12. It may have set up some unrealistic expectations. LOL

45 published shorts later, I'm here again. All in. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to not do Flash! It's too close to my heart.

Let's do this!

I'm in too! My first year here but what a way to get pushed outside your comfort zone.
I usually write varieties of short stories but after writing my first script and becoming thoroughly enthralled by the whole idea, I'm starting to think in pictures and sound. Maybe it will help my regular stories?
Could be a disaster too but hey, it's cheaper than a night out and I'm getting more out of it. Plus I don't have to wear heels to do it.

Ditto for me in this year's short story contest! I had never entered a contest before and making it past the first round made me so happy!

I've been on the fence; I generally don't do well with short deadlines.  Brilliance requires time to get into my character's head, which can be disorienting and uncomfortable given some of the things my characters do...  Ouch

On the other hand, not bad practice.  Given the population of writers I admire that do this I'm probably in as well.

Last year's Flash was also my first NYCM contest, and first writing contest I'd ever entered. I've entered every NYCM contest since, and it feels like the beginning of a new year. My goal is to do better than I did last year (I managed 1 point total between the first two stories). So we'll see.

Oh.  Poo.  Round two is right smack in the middle of what should be my first vacation since May of 2019.

Might go visit the northeast since I don't do masks and Europe is still in panic mode.  We'll see how well sanity spreads.

Just paid my entry fee.

My first Flash Fiction entry (another comp) ended up with an HM and published in a short story collection. I kind of shake my fist at them now, since it made me think I could do this well... Dang.

The process is the fun part, and I learn something every time. Right? Right???!?

Why are you making passive aggressive digs on a writing forum? 'Sanity spreads' has negative implications on views I am sure many on these forums hold. It's a divisive and stressful topic that has nothing to do with these forums and there is already so much commentary, debate, and even public rallies on it elsewhere.

If your story prompts came up and you used them to make scathing commentary on this subject, I'd be 100% on your side for sharing your vision and views. But the forums do stick mostly to writing and the contests.

At the very least, from a purely writer's craft perspective, if you're going to do this sort of thing, can you not make the segue so ugly? It's contrived.

Also paid up today. Today I'm thinking more about the entry fee than the contest, but by tomorrow that will flip and I'll feel good about it.

Provided money isn't an issue in a given year, I think I'll do flash, micro, micro. Maybe some day I'll have a go at one of the screenplay challenges just to see.

Well said. I couldn't agree more. Keep your commentary (for want of a better word) for your writing. A writing forum is not the place for soapboxing. All the best from this European mask wearer, who I assure you never panics.

Flash 2018 was there first time I did any creative writing outside of school assignments. Since then I’ve written a novel and signed with a literary agent who will be putting it on submission soon. So I will definitely be back for flash 21 to celebrate my anniversary as a writer!

Hi all,
pretty new to this. I'm in the microfiction now and hoping to make it through to the second round of that as well as entering my first flash one as well. I think that i *may* have paid an entry fee once before and not entered cause I got the weekend wrong. I know that I may have. I saw some mention of points in a few posts here. I don't remember reading about the points system, can anyone enlighten me?

In the flash fit, the top 15 stories are given points in order of judge ranking (1st gets 15, 2nd gets 14, etc.). There's two parts to the first round in this contest, so the scoring adds up the scores for both stories. The top 5 from each group then goes on to the next round, where you're reshuffled into new groups with new writers.

The rest of the flash fic rounds only do one story, though.

The contest description is here too if you want more details: http://nycmidnight.com/Competitions/FFC/Challenge.htm" rel="nofollow - http://nycmidnight.com/Competitions/FFC/Challenge.htm

Good luck with the micro! :)

'Soccer' is, strangely enough, a British term at its roots, so perhaps it's a fitting word in a way. My teams are out. Nothing against Italy, but I'm hoping for England to come out on top. If memory serves, they'd be first time winners.

I'm excited to say that I'm new to this contest, and I'm so nervous. Hoping I don't get two straight 'zeros' my first try. I'm looking forward to reading everyone's work and I'm just glad to have a writing community again! Tongue

Welcome! You are about to enter a new dimension, a place where
your very thought process will change. The first prompts will begin
the transformation, begin the journey. Can you hear the Twilight Zone
theme tune. Soon you will shrug off silly prompts and nasty genre, you
will enter every contest they offer, you two will be lost. But it is a lot of fun!

LOL, I love the Twilight Zone. And thank you! The biggest thing that I'm nervous about so far is getting assigned a genre that I'm very, very unfamiliar with. Political satire isn't my thing... yet. LOL

Seconded! I wrote my very first sci-fi story in Flash and it is about to be published. There really is something special about this place. Enjoy and can’t wait to read what you come up with!

Just signed up - I signed up to the short story one for my first writing competition ever in January and since then I have dithered about then ended up joining every comp so far this year, I fear I am firmly lost in the wilds of the NYCTwilight Zone

In for the 4th year in a row...busy on Saturday, so all my writing will be done Sunday.

Now if I could not get Historical Fiction, please and thank you, this go round, that'd be great LOL.

Couldn't stay away; registered just under the wire today.

"Another $58? It's a great incentive to write, but I could just motivate myself to write short stories on my own.* I don't need the prompts. Heck, I could read the prompts and do my own NYCM for free. Without the forum feedback...or critiques...or the competition. Ugh, f**k it, I'll just sign up."

*NB: she cannot motivate herself to write short stories on her own, at least not with nearly the same verve as when it's a contest.

We're getting close now! I'm really excited to participate in this competition  for the second time. Can't wait to get my prompts. I'm sure there will be the immediate shock and awe, followed by confusion and near panic. But at some point Saturday I hope to settle into an idea and really have fun! Good luck to all of you!

Yay I'm back! I haven't entered in one of the competitions since 2019. I paid to be in one in 2020 but was pregnant and when I got the prompts, my mind was just blank, and even though I remember that the prompts were quite good, I had no creative juices going on at all (all my energy must have been going in to the baby!), I didn't even write one word. Since then I somehow hadn't even noticed the emails from NYC so several entry dates and competitions have passed me by. My baby is 13 months now and I'm going see how it goes... my sister was supposed to help me with the baba but she isn't available and my husband's working all weekend... I'm not in my own house either, I'm visiting my mum who has recently had a matsectomy and radiotherapy, so she won't be able to do any baby-minding either - I'm just going to try and work on it when the baby is having a nap, and at night when she's asleep. I'm sure that's the only time lots of people have to write anyway, so I'll see how it goes! Good luck everyone, I've missed this! Let's hope my brain is working a little again!LOL

I've been feeling a little burnt out on these contests lately, but I'm too damn competitive not to hop in again

Good luck everyone :) May your genre assignments be gentle and your item/setting sane

This is amazing!! Congrats! You'll have to let us know how the process goes. I've read your Flash pieces the last few years and always love them!

The second story I wrote for Flash just got published yesterday. It’s the first piece of fiction I’ve had published in over 20 years. Can’t say enough for what this competition and the encouragement of the other amazing writers here has done for me. Super excited for the prompts tonight. Which probably means I’ll get the most sadistic prompts they have. LOL

Last year was the first time I had ever entered a contest, and it was an experience (I got political satire for my first genre 🤦‍♀️). That said, it pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me learn more about myself as a writer. It’s a great experience!

Second time signing up for this. Entering is a horrible idea because I'm scheduled to work, and I work at the hospital on third shift. The pressure is on. Hopefully that'll lead to a gem and enough pressure to break me out of my writing block.

Good luck, everyone! I look forward to seeing how we all do.

I’m excited to be doing Flash Fiction this year! I had to take a break the last couple years because the first weekend usually falls on my son’s birthday.... but this year it’s the weekend before! So it’s game on!

Can’t wait to read all your stories, especially those in my group, next week!!

I've got a friend with a gorgeous mountain chalet 30-ish minutes from home--she usually uses it as an Air BnB property, but she very generously offered it to me this weekend so I can write in peace for this challenge....I made it to the semis last year, so let's see how it goes now that I've got nothing but time and quiet! *please don't let me pull comedy or rom/com* Wacko

I'm awaiting the verdict on the first round of the 100 word microfiction and also waiting to discover what genre I'm getting for the flash fiction. Best of luck to everyone, may the genres favour your strengths.

How exciting! The last MF250 was the first time I've written fiction in over 25 years and I came e first in my first heat.  Foolishly, I assumed that this was easy.  I have been disabusing myself of that notion ever since!  But I am enjoying the process.   :)

Let us know what to look for when the time is right!
