I just got the email that the 100-word microfiction is open for registration. Is it just me, or did they double the registration fee? I did it last year and remember paying, like, $5 after the discount for tweeting the link.  $20 seems kind steep, especially since the feedback is so limited. (I mean, there's only so much you can say about 100 words. I got "remember every word counts!" and I'm like, YEAH, Denise, I just spent 24 hours agonizing over them.)

I dunno - is my memory flawed? Am I just being a cranky old lady about it?

I don't think that's right - I thought we paid about the same as for the 250. Wouldn't swear to it though.
I don't think I'll be entering this year. This may be sour grapes as it's the only story competition where I haven't made it into the second round, but I don't find 100 word stories particularly satisfying to read or to write. I'll definitely be back for the flash and 250 competitions though.

$0.20 a word?  I think I paid $0.02 a word for short story, and since I made round 2 somehow that comes down to a penny a word.

That's pretty steep given 100 words is about three or four lines of chopped dialog and a paragraph.

I can use that Saturday for other things.

You and me both, just can't get something started and then finished in that many words. Cept I did not enter the first one, haha.

I considered it, as a challenge, but I don't think microfiction is for me. 1,250 would be hard enough, if I got to Round 4 of this thing!

I believe last year it was $12 early after the media discount, this year $15.

Also noticing they’re tightening up the numbers as 15 and 8 make it through each round compared to 20 and 10 (I think) last year.

I’m definitely in, it’s a challenge to write such a short story but I’ve taken a liking to it and submitted some stories recently to 101Words.

Just hope the judges are smarter this year and remember the word limit!

I'm really excited about the 100 word challenge. I just entered. The 100 word challenge in 2020 was my first ever writing competition and I have a very distinct and emotional memory of participating. The pandemic was completely full blown at that time, we were in lockdown here and the writing challenge gave me some hope and allowed me to focus my brain on something positive. I did not do well but it still was a wonderful experience and I'm ready to try again. The timing is also fun because we're sort of now coming out of the pandemic so it's a new beginning in that way.

Last time I washed out in the semi-finals with a HM. I think I like the 250 micro better than the 100. I might sit this one out...

The first story I ever submitted to ANYTHING was way back in 2020...MF250...lol.  I was first in my group!  I think that hooked me (although I washed out in the next round, and will probably wash out in the 2nd round of the SSC...curse you Suspense!).

I have to think about 100 words.  I already have way too much story for every submission.  That might drive me to day drinking.

Yes I loved micro last year - I was knocked out after my terrible comedy poem in round 2 LOL but very keen to give it another try this year!

I think something about the short word limit and time limit takes away all the pressure for me so I’m just forced to write whatever I think of first without agonising over whether it’s a strong enough idea to carry me for 1000-2000 words like the other comps. Not to mention it gives me an excuse to let my overly poetic, metaphor-addicted side take the reigns without having to worry if it’s dragging on.

It’s probably not the best comp for detailed critique since it’s such a brief story, but it’s definitely lots of fun ;)

I’ve finally managed to convince my sister to join NYC Midnight for this comp which is exciting too!

How amazingly fun!

I strong-armed one of my Senior Software Developers at the office to do Short Story a couple years ago and it was super fun to have someone that you really know IRL to play along with. We pretty much texted the process with each other the whole time!

I'm kinda interested to see what the genres are - my gut feeling is that serious emotional stories tend to do better than humorous ones in the final round but we will see!

Drama, often involving a dead parent or two, seems to be a common winning theme.  I’m also interested to see how many went serious.  The second place story was posted here I know, it was a beautiful fantasy.

The Flash Fiction (1000 words in 48 hours) is good, and you get to write at least twice in that so it's probably the best guaranteed value for money NYCM offer (along with Short Screenplay).

Hmmm. I came to this post because I'm struggling with the same choice. Was hoping something here would help me decide. I think it worked. I'm going for it. The price seems a little high, but I like the focus and I like that we're basically writing poetry.

I love the micro competitions, so I can’t resist this one. I had a blast last year and wrote work I really loved. I was intrigued to see that less people are moving on each round though as compared to last year. I wonder what caused the change?

Last year's 100 word microfiction was the first the writing competition I ever entered.  I struggled really hard to whittle my story down to a thousand words.  Then I re-read the instructions and realized I had more work to do.

I'm pretty new to this creative writing thing and just advanced in SS.  I will likely enter the MF because I'm on some sort of writing bender.  The word limitations are a good exercise fore me since I struggle with story arc and endings.  They force m to abandon my comfort zone of word-smithing and focus beginning, middle, end, conflict, resolution, etc.

I actually loved the MF contest and scored an HM in the Finals, so I was pretty pleased...AND I managed to crank out one of my favorite bits of writing ever, so I'm definitely in this year.

There's something deliciously amusing about having plenty of time to write 100 words while agonizing  over every single one of them. :-)

I like writing microfiction. It's challenging to create a complete story in so few words.

My issue with the most recent contests is they don't tell you who the judges are and it looks like the judges for both contests I entered were the same people. They are still saying "coming soon" so before I enter another I'd like to see who they hired. It also appears that some feedback on this forum is pretty close to what is provided to entrants which of course is coincidental but it would be good to see who actually thinks our writing is good and who thinks it's the worst ever and they only like the synopsis.

I like the microfiction challenges because I'm not sure I can write anything longer! I am not a storyteller by nature, and ideas don't come naturally to me. It's easier for me to whittle down word count than try to expand it.

Considered entering but decided to give it a miss. I'm a bit fatigued from comps atm, and 100 word stories are not my forte. I entered last year and bombed and, looking at the ones which came top 10, I can see why. I think it requires a style which ... isn't really my style nor a style I tend to read. I also suspect you need to be smarter than me to really get a lot of the good stories. I might try next year if I'm in the mood (and my intelligence has increased, which is unlikely) :)

Thank you!  Indeed it is.  A NYCM MF I submitted wasn’t accepted, thinking it just didn’t make too much sense out of context of the prompts, so very happy the most recent one did.

You can always pick a random number and write a 100 word story based on that group prompt.  You can even post your story on the boards and ask for critique/comments.

Oh my goodness, welcome!! These contests are super fun, and many of us end up signing up for several of the contests each year! Even if you don't advance, the feedback you get from the community in the forums is really beneficial, and everyone's really supportive.

Good luck!

You’ll be happy to know Spy is not a genre in the 100 MF contest. A few genres are cut due to the short length.  No Crime Caper, Mystery, or Political Satire either.

You know, I didn't think I would like the 100 micro, but it ended up being fun in an unexpected way.

I ended up with a story that has about five extra phrases I cut that change the story, but not the plot because the plot is so damn minimal. The end result is that I could swap out some of what made the cut for some of what didn't and end up with a very different feeling story.

The end result is something that is highly aesthetic. You can't give the reader everything. You can just nudge them with a few key impressions and then wonder if they'll walk away with anything interesting.

I've seen that a lot in published 100 word microfiction, I think it's totally fair game.

I expect that a 200 word title for a 100 word story might be a bit much, but a lot of people leverage their title to give more impact to micro. It's definitely a thing!

I hadn’t heard of NYCM before yesterday. Immediately signed up for this contest because it looks so fun! Excited to get my assignment.
I had signed up for the NYC Midnight emails some time ago and completely forgot why or how I found out about it. Then I saw the reminder in my inbox to register for this contest and so I decided on the spot to go for it. Just finished my entry. I have no idea whether it is good or awful. Working in only 100 words was an eye-opening challenge, though!

I love writing micro fiction but this was definitely a challenge! My first draft was well over 200 words. By the time I submitted, the story had changed quite a bit. It was such fun!
