I'm curious what everyone does for a living. Is there a trend, or will it just be all across the board? I feel pretty certain most of us here have a "day job." Butcher, baker, candlestick maker. What's yours?

I have a Bio-Chemistry degree and manage a Robotics company. I don't know how that happened, but it appeals to my very nerdy soul...

I manage a mushroom substrate and spawn production company. We make our own supplemented growing medium, inoculate it with spawn we've created from tissue samples, incubate for the proper amount of time, then send "blocks" out to customers all over the US and Canada who grow and harvest gourmet mushrooms.

I'm a program coordinator at a summer camp!  So work has been quiet, to say the least.  Before this, I was the front-end manager at a children's museum.  AND THEN before that,  I worked in 4-H Youth Development.

So....kids kids kids.  It a calling. haha.  That and environmental education are my schtick.

I'm a tax lawyer, specialising in a niche area of employment tax. People who have met me in real life always seem surprised by this. Apparently I act far less seriously than they expect a tax lawyer to act.

Edit: I'm willing to bet I will win the award for most boring sounding job ...though I really do love employment tax...

Unfortunately, I am unemployed.

I went to University in 2014 as a non-traditional student. I’m still there. Luckily and thankfully, my institution awarded me a scholarship to continue my studies from masters to PhD level, just eighteen months or thereabouts left before my doctorate. I hoped to visit UB as a visiting scholar in 2019-20. I now expect this to happen in 2022 (touch wood).

Would I like a job? Of course, however, times are tough for everyone. I’m glad I have the opportunity and funds to continue my studies. Otherwise, it would not be possible. My youngest son is eighteen tomorrow and I’m tutoring him for his Leaving Cert year because of you know what.

Also, creative writing is a welcome break from the more academic writing.

Yeah, I will agree, it is really interesting! I came here after working in a doctor's office for 10 years, so it was a major switch for me.

Just look for something like oysters (blue, white, yellow, king), shiitake, or lions mane, and you should be all set! I'm not sure the rules on advertising, but I can shoot you a PM with some suggestions (not me, just for the record, but we work with tons of farms who do the kit thing!).

Middle school English teacher here (this year I'm 100% distance learning, which has not been fun). Cry
I also teach US History (not my favorite) and our Creative Writing elective. I don't know what they're going to do with the Creative Writing class when I retire next year, since I'm the only teacher with the credential to teach it.

I have a Telecommunications degree, but took a promotion after graduation instead of doing the dream-pursuing thing. I'm now a training supervisor for a QSR franchise. I design and coordinate hiring and training practices and oversee roughly 500 employees, and do one-on-one coaching with incoming management trainees. Worked my up from one of those "burger-flipping" teenagers all those years ago. :P

I'm also an English teacher - though I teach high school. I'm also 100% online, which I'm grateful for, though I expect high school students are easier to work with online than younger grades.

This year it's sophomores and seniors and I can't get them all books and I cannot WAIT for this ding-dang pandemic to end.

I own and operate a fast-casual restaurant. We do melt-style sandwiches, soup, and mac n cheese. So even though we were officially in lock-down, we've been open and working the whole year. I feel grateful that we are still thriving.

I want to give a shout-out to all the teachers on here who have had to pivot and teach remotely or in a hybrid form. We still have two home (out of 8!) in high school and it has been pretty rough. So THANK YOU!!

I was a commercial photographer for about a decade and a half. I enjoyed photography, but I wouldn't say it was my passion. The commercial aspect of it felt tepid. I ended up in ecommerce, which could have ben fun had the company I was working for not been mismanaged.

A couple of years ago I was recruited into a sort of consulting/ technical writing gig. I've stayed with that working independent contracts over the last couple of years, but I want/ need to switch things up again at some point this year.

I used to be a family lawyer until arthritis knocked me for a six and as it has taken complete hold of me, I'm no longer able to work.

These days, writing is a way for me to escape; when I'm writing I enter a new world, and can become the character. I'm extremely restricted in what I can do in reality, yet in my stories I can walk again, run, fly even, there are quite literally no boundaries and no limitations.

Even though I'm not 'published' yet (that's my goal for this year, to have my first book published), I now classify myself as an author. So I guess that's my day job Smile

I'm an educator at a small boarding school. I work with students with learning differences, teach acting & direct the plays (except not this year - Covid), and help out with the horse program. We are teaching classes live with some some online students. We all live here. The kids aren't allowed to leave campus, we are all restricted.  It's a small world, and writing has been a great way to make it bigger. I'm lonely and I appreciate this community very much.

Happy birthday to your son. Mine turned 18 on January 28th. So, you will be empty nest. I only have the one.. so, I too will be an empty nest. Interesting time....

Hi Frefallr,

Thanks. Smile Also, belated birthday wishes to yours. You're right, an interesting time. All the best.

Ok, let me get this straight. You escort mostly women and most of your “gigs” are secret?

Do they tip well?

Most blocks from farms I work with will produce at least twice- the yield is always a little smaller with each fruiting, and take a little longer, but as long as it doesn't dry out you should be able to get at least two. Our record for a home-grower local to us is 8 harvests on a lions mane block; she was likely getting like 1/4lb toward the end, but it was more of a game at that point to see how long she could keep it going LOL We do 10lb blocks (home go kits usually come in two sizes, either a 4-5lb block or a 8-10lb block) that produce somewhere around 1.5-2lbs of mushrooms on a first harvest, though I have seen closer to 3lbs on some.

Commercial growers will get really specific with temps, humidity, and CO2 levels, but most people should be able to grow mushrooms right on their kitchen counters- standard room temperature, somewhere around 68-72F is fine for most species. Ideally it would be a little cooler, like 60-68F, but that's hard to do at home and that's ok.

Each block is going to produce one type of mushroom. If you were to inoculate the blocks with two different types of spawn, the strains would likely fight each other with the stronger mycelium winning control over the substrate (hmmmmm, there may be a story somewhere in that scenario).

I also teach US History (not my favorite) and our Creative Writing elective. I don't know what they're going to do with the Creative Writing class when I retire next year, since I'm the only teacher with the credential to teach it.
I'm also an English teacher - though I teach high school. I'm also 100% online, which I'm grateful for, though I expect high school students are easier to work with online than younger grades.

This year it's sophomores and seniors and I can't get them all books and I cannot WAIT for this ding-dang pandemic to end.

I can't wait for it to end, either. I have some kids who are doing, and I have others who are trying to do school while watching younger siblings and trying to get them to do DL, too. California's response to the pandemic has been all over the place. I've been watching Oregon a bit, since we're moving there next year.

Did you try glamourising your job? Maybe say you were up all night helping Batman? Or you were Santa’s helper making all the toys? It can backfire though. I was working as IT support for NGO and said we are helping the poor and she ended up saying we are poor and before you know it the school was asking if we were ok. 😂

My wife filled out a questionnaire at work and they asked "Do you feel safe at home?"  She wrote "No".

English isn't her first language, and she didn't realize she just announced to the world that she's in a physically or emotionally abusive relationship until I explained it to her.

I kept expecting to get a visit, but...not so much.  Apparently the object of the exercise was more about filling out the form than actually helping anyone.

I'm sorry to hear about the arthritis. Writing can be a wonderful escape sometimes.

Also, you have nothing but my utmost respect for having been a family lawyer. When I was at uni, I thought I might want to do family law. Then I did some mini-pupillages and work experience and couldn't fathom how anyone could stand it. What really summed it up for me was seeing two lawyers negotiating a divorce and childcare access when the lawyer I was shadowing asked the other to get his client to give ours visitation over Christmas and was asked for a justification, my lawyer's response was to explain, then say, "Also, I'm going to eat my own head if they don't stop bickering about this.". Anyone who can put up with that is astonishing in my book.

I do behavioral therapy for young children with special needs! In the past year I've also tackled organizing my program's daily distance learning classes. It can be a bit stressful (imagine 9 kids all below age 8, in 8 different classes, all of whom would have had one-on-one para support at in-person school) but I love the challenge and fun of working with them :)

I teach 2nd grade in Las Vegas! We started the year 100% virtual, but have slowly been adding more and more kids in person. Starting March 1st, I can have 75% of my classroom's capacity which equates to 23 of my 27 kids in person every week. I really hate hybrid - wish they were all online or all in person, but the light is at the end of the tunnel; I'm getting the 2nd dose of the Moderna vaccine on Wednesday!

I'm a personal shopper at Bloomingdale's and also an adjunct professor of English (specifically poetry) on the side. I'm also Director of the Montgomery County (Pennsylvania) Poet Laureate Program, and founded and run an annual poetry festival called Caesura, now in its fourth year. The latter two I actually spend a fair amount of money on, rather than making it from.

Sadly, the things I want to do for a living are nowhere near as lucrative as the utterly frivolous thing that actually pays the bills.

That's great! Here in LA things are starting to open up, sloooowly. I'm curious - do the kids rotate? Surely it's not just 4 unlucky kids, right? Or do some parents not want their kids back at school?

Hi! I am looking to grow mushrooms, but was reading that it’s not worth it to buy premade mushroom kits because they won’t be good, so it’s better to make your own substrate. I’m so glad to have found an expert in the wild so I can ask! Is that true, if you don’t mind me asking?

So I'd say that depends on what "worth it" means to you- buying a block means you don't have to invest in everything else. People think of "kits" whwn they hear substrate blocks, but I mostly work with farms who buy blocks in so they don't have to do all the back-end work and can still harvest 1000lbs a week. We also drop-ship for some bigger name vendors who market "kits" to home-growers, and we send out the same exact commercial-quality blocks for those orders 😁 Feel free to private mesaage me if you have more questions!

Back in the day when I owned my farm, we used log plugs. Really easy to cultivate and they were prolific and tasty. All you need is a log and a drill. The plugs were capable of supplying my 200 member CSA as well as satisfy my cordon bleu trained wasband...

Back in the day we just got a job where they kept us in the dark and fed
us BS - oh, wait, that was they thought we were mushrooms.

I've had "mushroom" on a business card as one of my titles.  The other really odd ones were 'speed bump' (got added after a 16 yo ran me over in a toyota sequoia...that was a week in the hospital) and "Evil Network Overlord".

Currently I have no fun titles on my card.  Boo.

Oh hello fellow IT human. I’m a software delivery manager. But if you asked my daughter what I really do she’ll say: Mommy, types and talks a lot in meetings.

When I used to work nights and returned to college, I always worried my son would tell his teachers I sleep all day.

Oh no! You offered them some IT tips for the trouble, right? Like, did you try rebooting your computer first? Batman would have been good for me! He did think it was neat that I got a new backpack at the same time he started kindergarten. Not a cool one like his, but...

Classic. Did you reboot? LOL Best IT advice, ever.

I work for the Canadian Federal Government, and I have a graduate degree in Military History.

I spend all day writing memoranda, briefing notes, and reports.  I enjoy flexing my fiction muscles occasionally.

So who, exactly, were the Cimbrians defeated by Marius at the battle of Raudian Field?  Last I heard there was some debate, but probably Germanic from the Jutland area.

I create social media content for a local restaurant chain. It's fun. I get to take pictures of really good food and write about it. And then eat it. No complaints!

I also have a (true crime) podcast and wrote a book that came out a few years ago, although neither of those makes a whole lot of money.

I run a physician network in Arizona.  We help seniors maintain good health and normal function, help them navigate the complex American healthcare system, and coordinate services for those with complex health needs.  It's gratifying.

I wonder why. Wink

We're still in full lockdown in Ireland. It was the driest Paddy's Day on record. Also, not a parade float in sight and the sun was splitting the stones. What I wouldn't have given for a GREEN BEER?

However, I used to work in a bar many moons ago. I know your pain. Strangest request I ever got was from an American tourist who wanted brown sugar to flavour/sweeten his stout. I nearly had a fit of the vapours. Still, he left a fine tip.

Brown sugar in a stout? Weirdddd. But I’ll put whatever you want in a glass if the tip is good. LOL

One of the oddest ones I’ve ever heard was a lady who ordered a chocolate martini (already an atrocity, in my opinion) with tanqueray gin instead of vodka as the base. I tried it and it was...good? Astoundingly palatable. So now I try every weird concoction people order, because what if?

Here’s to GREEN BEERS next year. Better times ahead!
