I am both excited and terrified as we wait.  I made the mistake of writing a finals entry that is intensely personal to me, so the emotional stakes of the results are much higher than they've been in the past.  Who else is sweating it out with me?

Me also! What a ride its been, this competition!

Your Jedi story stuck with me. It was one of those that comes back into my head every now and then :)

I don't really think that my finals piece is going to be top ten material... I liked it, but then had a bit of feedback that really stung and shook my confidence. So I'm not really holding my breath.

Round 1 micro results come out this week too. I wrote that piece in 20 minutes and submitted it with out betas, so I am gearing myself up for a double dose of rejection this week.

Considering your work has already scored in the top 1.8%, hopefully if it is "rejected" it won't feel like TOO much of a rejection :)

Heck this is my third flash fiction final, and I swear it feels like the most competitive yet! Every story I read had some seriously strong points -- I think there's no way to tell how this shakes out for any of us. But no matter what you all gave it hell and came out a stronger writer because of it.

Fingers crossed for you all <3

Truthfully I feel like I'm already 'up' on my entry fee, on a couple of levels.

First, I've been in a bunch of of NYCM screenplay finals where they're normally quite dead on the forums, and this short story one really opened my eyes to what it should be like! There was a fantastic range of stories to enjoy and plenty of rewarding feedback looks to engage with.

Second, since the first time I did a poem and it got some love here, all I've wanted to do is make it far enough through a contest to submit one in a final and see how it did. Not win, just see. And now I've done that. One off the bucket list.

So sure, I'm sweating bullets about the results because I'm human, but I genuinely think whether I place or not, this has been awesome. I've won.

Christ that sounds corny, but it's how I feel, sue me Smile

I think making it personal is not a mistake in any way. I think powerful stories come from the heart and are personal, and that's what it's all about, whether the personal ties are obvious or not. It will resonate (and by the way, I read yours and it was truly wonderful and rang true and was poignant and beautifully written, so there!) Good luck to all of us.

Trey, your story was incredible. I'm with you in terms of being excited and terrified. The competition is truly fierce in this one. I didn't post my story because I knew I wouldn't have time to return feedback while working on my novel (plus I ended up getting covid.) But I peeked at a few stories and they were amazing. Thanks for posting this, Trey, and thank you to Tim for reminding us that we've all succeeded with our work no matter the results. Best of luck to all. -Alex

I'm not really sure how to feel. I liked my entry overall, but the judges HATED my last historical fiction entry (this past summer during the Short Story finals).

Both my husband and I made it to the finals, so I'm praying one of us cracks the top 10...but who knows. I joked that if we somehow took first and second, we could plan a vacation to Turks and Caicos or some other beach paradise. LOLLOLLOL

Sorry about your covid, Northern Writer.

So cool about both you and your husband making finals, Jenspenden. That's amazing.

I feel bad that I've fallen behind on my reading and commenting goals. Attempting to get it done before the results. So many great stories, as usual. Congrats to you all, regardless of the results. This contest is a Masterclass in writing. So thanks for making it worth the price of admission.Clap

I always get super nervous scrolling the results. Like heart-pounding nervous. lol. I think it will be the same this time, even though I definitely feel like I've already won by making it here.

Good luck everyone!

I feel ya, I really liked my final round story but I thought most of the other stories on the forum were way better, which makes sense given the caliber of writers in the final round. I agree with/appreciate what Oryx said about it not really being a rejection. Or as they say at the Oscars, it was an honor just to be nominated. Wink

Are any of y'all doing the short story contest starting on the 22nd? I wasn't originally planning to, but my best friend was interested and that persuaded me to sign up, so now I'm in for that one! These contests have been such a boon during the awful days of the pandemic.

PS - for what it's worth, I LOVED your piece.

I was surprised by this, as I loved it and don't remember reading anything terrible, so I went back to read the comments.. I didn't see anything terribly critical, to be honest. Sometimes, I have to get some distance from the criticism because I tend to only hear the negative. Often, when I go back, I find it's not as bad as I thought.

Well, I loved your micro entry. Certainly how long it takes to write is irrelevant, and yours is smart and funny. Don't think things will be as bad as you expect. I honestly can't figure out the judging. I wish they explained the points. I liked Maison D'Horloge much more than Matilde, but Mathilde scored much higher. I am honestly glad I didn't make it to the next level in the screenplay challenge. It would have just been too much. Especially because I did sign up for the SS as well. And we all have another go for sure at micro, right? Nice to have so much distraction with the world falling apart and all. I'll die if I get PolSat. Real life is just too dreadful these days.. I just don't even want to think about politics... Good luck everyone! It's true. Feel grateful just to be here.

You won't find the feedback I'm referencing on the forums, as it was offered to me directly/privately. Essentially they told me that using an established mythos was lazy storytelling, that my prose was so dense that it made wading through the story a complete snoozefest, and that I didn't really deserve to be in the finals... It was pretty painful to read.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

nod1v1ng, honestly that sounds like mean-spirited “feedback”. And mean-spirited feedback is s different thing entirely from harsh feedback, because if it’s just harsh then maybe it’s still intended to be helpful and you can find a lot of value in the rawness of the response. But sometimes people aren’t trying to help at all, sometimes they just don’t care or even want to cause pain.

Mean-spirited just wants to cause pain.

Edit: Furthermore, not only is it not helpful, it's actually harmful because it can give a false impression of our work.

Hmm... This person does not sound like a supportive, thoughtful reader, but someone with an agenda. I hope this is not a go-to reader for you. And when you get the feedback, I hope you share it with this person, (and with us) because I am pretty sure that will not be the consensus. I love the beta system because I have found a few people who are really able to cut to the chase and seem to understand what I am writing and my style. There was one beta reader who was just brutal, and so I avoid that one completely. I would suggest you not ask this person to review your work.

I think intellectually it's easy to say - ok, this person is not my target audience. Or that the reader has a hurtful agenda. Some of us old timers have periodically experienced folks who want to stick it to the "big dogs" - as if the thought process is "nod's popular 'cause she's been around a while and knows everyone and is list mum and often scores well, so if I tear her down, I can become prom queen." (Believe me it's a thing. Ask Nixie all about it...)

Still, emotionally it's a blow to read that kind of feedback. It is human nature to be shaken. I have a pretty lengthy list of short story publications, and I still have raging imposter syndrome...

Raging Imposter Syndrome! Perfect description - and might make a nice jump off point for one of these challenges! I bet most of us struggle with that. I know i do. And of course you would be shaken. I struggle more than I even admit to myself with how to nurse my wounds without descending into abyss of self-doubt. And just so you know - when I started this competition (the first one for me), because you made the list, I searched out your piece first. And felt like it set the bar. Then I read all of the comments on your piece, and figured out who had been around, whose comments made the most sense to me, and then I read their stuff and commented- frantically waving the flag over on my island to get someone to visit. I have found, for the most part, generous, thoughtful, talented writers who want others to succeed. The Beta readers was a revelation to me, and it was fun to join in and read early versions and seriously think about ways to improve them. And I definitely put some poor readers, one in particular this last round because of the damn dream thing, through hell. I have no doubt those other tear downers lurk in the dark, eager to lend a poison pen. But I do think they are the minority. And they will always be around, ready and waiting. Sad but true.

Hi everyone,

What a ride it's been since June/July when we stared this journey!

I've never entered any writing competitions, so gave it a 0.005% chance that my first story would go anywhere. After winning two rounds and making it to the final, I can honestly say that the biggest payoff from all of this has been confidence that I can actually spin a yarn.

I am sure you all feel the same... really we just want to know that someone out there "gets" our writing.

Saying that, winning cold hard cash would be awesome too Wink.

Whoever takes the top prize- the drinks will be on you!

I'm from Ireland- so mine's a Guinness please?

I kind of like the whole "Schroedinger's Contest" approach right now. We've all technically won until a winner has been announced.

Finals this time around was such a roller coaster ride. I had a love/hate relationship with my story while writing it and for weeks after. Impostor syndrome was breathing down my neck for sure.

Ah well. Band-Aid will be pulled off soon. Woo hoo.

nod1v1ng: That is not feedback. That's an attack. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I find most writers really want to help others succeed - but you always have those few (like the schoolyard bullies) who find their joy in cutting other people down.

You are an amazing writer (and person, too!). Don't ever, ever let anyone make you think otherwise. Heart

I am so glad I'm not a judge this round - Every story I read was really good! I would have no idea how to judge (and no idea how optimistic to be about my own performance).

Also, Nod1v1ng- their feedback made me so angry! That would sting- there was nothing constructive about it. I hope the judges prove them wrong, but even if you don't make the top 10, that person was wrong anyway. <3

(I read your story but I am now realizing I never commented on it! I will correct this immediately)

I'm trying really hard to be philosophical and mature about this - like seriously, I've never been published, I started doing these contests a year ago in order to get myself writing more, and to have made it to the final of this competition is so amazing... but I also kind of love the story I submitted and it would just be so lovely to have that validated (the $$$ wouldn't hurt, either). But I'd say I have 50/50 odds on being disqualified for not having enough dream, also quite a few people didn't like my final line, so... eep.

Nod1v1ng, that feedback is brutal!!! I would've been gutted if I received something like that... it's not at all helpful or constructive, either, just sounds like the story wasn't that person's taste but instead of acknowledging that and finding something constructive to say, they went full nuclear on you... not cool.

Anyway, ALL the stories that I read here have been really amazing. It's truly incredible to read so much great writing. Every story that I read deserves to be in the final. I have a few thoughts about which ones might be in the top 10, but that's just my personal speculation and I won't share it here, because we're 2 days away from hearing from the actual judges, so what's the point? Good luck everyone, it's been a pleasure, and I hope I see some of you in the SS challenge!

I've been eyeballs deep in another little writing project so this totally slipped my mind. Now, of course, it's gone and pitched a tent on the ole cerebral front lawn.

No real expectations given the wonderful level of competition, being a first-timer and what not. Wouldn't say no to a top ten but not holding my breath this time around 😊

Also quietly keen for potentially another round of micro and the upcoming short story comp!

Y'all, between this coming out on Thursday night and the micro flash round one results coming out tonight, this week has been agonizingly slow. I've already spent most of the workweek doomscrolling (I'm in the U.S., so, ya know...) and getting very, very little done, which is just making the hours tick by even more slowly.

That's cool! Gotta say the final stories are so impressive and so different. I have no idea what will win or place because it's such an impressive group. I can think easily of ten off the top of my head that are worthy. And the location was a bitch. This is my first time doing these, and I'm glad I didn't have any clue how great the competition was going to be. Looking back on my first story, if I had known the caliber of writer, I might have been simply unable to actually write or submit...

So many top 10 worthy! ...and those are only the ones we saw! I think roughly half put something up on the forum, but then you've got all those other writers who sweated it out with the rest of us but didn't post. Which heightens the anxiety further. So many good pieces *here* and so many others *not here* - likely to be incredible, too.

{{shudder}}

We all have a 1 in 75 chance (or maybe slightly better odds if someone bailed). I'm still liking Schroedinger's Contest at this point. The alternate pocket of time, now, where we've all simultaneously won.

And 100% with you on the dream prompt. My brain hurt, for days, after I submitted. I always have that moment where I submit and go, 'wow, that wasn't half bad.' And then I read what others have posted and have that 'oh god what did I do,' moment. It's part of the torture that especially comes with a final round.

This year's Flash was my first time entering the NYC Midnight challenge. I'm in the 3rd round of the Short Screenplay, and we'll find out where tonight in the 250. I've also entered the Short Story.

The more stories I read posted here in the forums, the more inspired I am to enter every competition. It's daunting to experience the talent of the finalists, but only makes me push myself to be among them. I'm so happy I discovered this competition.

Didn’t make it to the finals but still anxious to see the results.  I would think they’d come out before the R1 250.  Milking both announcements!

My first too! Entered this, the 250 and the screenplay, which for me was the most challenging simply because it seems to require very different tools. I learned a ton, especially in Beta on the screenplay thing, and though both efforts got points, I did not make the next round. And I am so relieved!!! I just don't think I could have done it. I really needed a break before the short story one.

Ugh I keep checking my email in case they send the results out early...

I was extremely zen about the results until yesterday. Now I'm perpetually anxious, haha!

Can anyone who was in the final last year remember what time they sent the results out? Like, do they really do it at midnight, or is it like all the other competition rounds, i.e. any time from about midday onwards?

Browsing their Twitter feed...looks like last year’s winner was announced at 9:17 PM ET.

100 MF winner was at 6:32 PM.

So could be any time, but it looks like they don’t wait until the 11th hour for overall winner results.

Trey is a nice person and tracked the last few finals results that he participated in:

FF 2017 - 30 min early
SS 2018 - 9 hours early
SS 2020 - 6 hours early

So keep refreshing those emails. LOL

They're for real gonna make us wait til midnight, huh

I'm d y i n g

(I don't know what causes them to post earlier rather than later so I'm imagining a very impassioned argument about the rankings at NYC HQ)

Ah, the thrilling anxiety...

I had my email up on my second monitor but I couldn't see my inbox without turning my head so I put my main monitor on split screen... and I turned on notifications for NYC Midnight's tweets just in case they tweet about it before I get the email.

Every time my phone buzzes I panic.

No, really?!!I loved yours. I loved a bunch of them. It was a real revelation seeing how many creative ways everyone used the location. It was inspiring and a bit intimidating. Can't think about it anymore (though I stand by my prediction). I'm hitting Netflix for the next hour.

I am being 100% sincere when I say yours was one of my absolute favorites- which is saying something, as every story I read is really good. (I'm so glad I'm not a judge!) So even if your prediction comes true, know at least I would have put your story in the top 10 for sure.

I'm been trying to plan tomorrow's lesson for two hours now- so hard to focus. Netflix sounds like a good idea!

That means a lot. Thank you!!!! And that is also 100% sincere. Ok -If you want something smart and snarky, there's Pretend it's a City, Fran Leibowitz chats with Scorsese. And you won't suddenly discover that your mind is elsewhere and you've missed some major plot point. No plot points. Just nice quips and I love NY, so....
