Just a topic to acknowledge being done and subbed.

My genre was romance, my action "dyeing hair," and my word was "lower."

5:55 pm US EST and it's gone! Clap

Good luck everyone. Star

I submitted quite early on; about 3.5 hours after topic assignment but I've just gone in and resubmitted a few minutes ago with a small punctuation change.

My genre was sci-fi, my action was getting blood pressure taken and mu word was work

Just submitted too, I had rom com, lighting a candle, push

I thought of the idea super early today, but I'm not sure how it is. I think I'm happy with it, especially since I kind of dread writing rom com.

Also done! I had comedy/driving over the speed limit/potential.

I'd written a story yesterday that I was pretty happy with, but which was really not a comedy. This morning I tried again and got 90 words. They weren't good words, at all. This afternoon I tried a third time, wrote something which wasn't great, but which had potential (see what I did there?) After some editing I managed to massage it into a story I'm okay sending off. Whew!

Just submitted and now time for a gin before bed I think!

My first ever ghost story and I managed to whack it out in one go - but spent the day tweaking here and there.

Good luck to everyone!

Submitted earlier this afternoon and too anxious to look at it any further.

My genre was fairy tale/and or fantasy. Action was stepping into a puddle and my word was pressure. Probably the smoothest writing experience I've had for a NYC midnight contest so far, but can't tell if it's because of a good prompt or if I'm actually getting better at this whole writing thing.

Done and submitted my Sci-Fi story. Action was taking pain medication and word was transform. It's gone and forgotten.

I had totally forgotten about the contest until this morning, and had stuff planned all day, so had to write it in kind of a hurry, but was pleased with the result. I had group 109: genre romance, action checking the time, and word circle. First time getting romance, wasn’t as bad as I thought (it helps that it was the 250 word contest and not the 1000 word). Looking forward to reading everyone’s stories!

Done. Group 72 - drama, arrival, eating a piece of candy.
I wasn't overly chuffed to have got drama for the second time in succession, and I spent most of the day torn between three or four half-ideas, none of which I really liked. But I'm reasonably content with how it turned out in the end.
Good luck everyone.

Well, I wasn't feeling my first story I wrote last night but came up with another one this morning. This short means I can write 3 and take the best. I actually liked the one I submitted.

Group 100 so I had: Comedy, Turning on a Sprinkler, spend.
Not too challenging.

Fantasy/fairy tale / peeling a fruit / finally

Did some brainstorming but went to bed without an idea.  Had a crazy dream about writing the story but the idea would never fit in 250 words and didn’t include the action :D

Finally settled on idea this morning and submitted a couple hours ago.

Done and done...I can't think of a genre that would be less welcome than rom-com, but I think I pulled it off! My husband said it read like a Hallmark movie, so I must have checked some of the necessary boxes. Ha!

Any heatmates out there?

Done. 52- ghost story-changing a lightbulb- trap.
It was more of a challenge to squeeze everything in 250 words than the idea. Happy with the result today but I am sure that I'll find mistakes in my story tomorrow, when I can't change anything. LOL

Just submitted my entry for Group 12's assignment- a comedy featuring someone putting on a pair of gloves and the word berry!

I'm a little nervous about the use of my assigned word. I used it plural, and specifically wrote it as "raspberries". Do you think it'll still count? Or should I go back and leave them more vaguely as just... berries? :|

I like the system where we can submit multiple times. I finished my second draft eight hours ago and submitted. I knew I'd want to do one last round of edits, but wanted to take a break and maybe get some sleep first. It was much easier to unwind knowing I had something in in case I overslept or I woke up to find the internet had exploded or something.

The word must be spelled the same.
It can be inside of a longer word, but the spelling must be the same.

Just clicked the submit button. I was pretty happy with my first draft but both my husband and a good friend found it confusing...so had to pivot and it changed things quite a bit. Now I find myself lost deep in second-guessing land. Oh well. Still 2.5 hours left to figure out what the hell it is I'm trying to say.

Group 87. Ghost story / playing a game of cards / return.

Good luck to all!

It needs to say “berry” so making it plural would technically lead to a disqualification! You should definitely fix and resubmit!

Berry bad! I'm just a rookie, but the rules are clear:

"The assigned word must be included in the story exactly how it is spelled . . . and it may be part of a longer word."

You'd better change it in the next 2.5 hours. Raspberry is fine, raspberries is not.

Done and, surprisingly, excited. Group 18, which was historical fiction/flipping a coin/changing. I understand hist fic not being a popular genre but I *love* how much I learned (relearned, shall we say) today!

Sidenote: can anyone remind me what we are supposed to title the email we send as a backup? And also maybe what email we are supposed to send that to? And maybe just all of those details (I didn't accidentally close that tab a little early, lol...)

I did it! I have not been so nervous about something in a long time. I suppose that means it was a good thing I gave this a go.

My genre was romance (yikes- about the most challenging you could pick for me), my action was "opening a window" and my word was "change."

Fun challenge. Ended up with precisely 250 words.

I really hope they like it!

My genre was comedy, my action was ordering from a drive-thru, and my word was rich.

I don't feel great about it, but it's in. Of course, I felt pretty good about previous entries and went nowhere fast, so maybe not feeling good is a positive sign.

It's my first comedy story, and at first I was glad of the genre, but... tell a joke, be funny in 250 words or less. In 24 hours. With "using a spray paint" and "born". Go.
Nasty.

Best of luck, everyone!

I'm in group 17, rom-com, drinking a milkshake, "wild".

This is the earliest I've ever finished and submitted for NYCM across various challenges for the past 4 years, AND this is the first time I had enough time to do beta swaps, I'm so proud of myself!! (I'm usually editing in a craze and submitting with like 2 minutes to spare)

And even though I got the dreaded rom-com genre (my least favorite, I'd prefer political satire over that), I actually had a blast. I'm so grateful to all my beta readers.

Submitted my final version.

I drew historical fiction/ eating corn on the cob/ "known". Had to completely abandon my first attempt:

Quote A dog walked into a bar and noticed, upon entering, that people were eating corn on the cob.
"I'll have what they're having," the dog said.
"We don't serve dogs here," the barman replied.
The dog growled, "I've never known such discrimination in all my life. Get wrekt scrub."
Still, the barman refused and chased the dog from the establishment.
And that dog? He was none other than the 16th President of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln.

I know what you are thinking: Why change it? It's flawless. Well, a few reasons:
1) We'd know how that dog's story ends, and that's just too sad.
2) I don't want to poison the public against people in the service industry. They put up with enough as it is.
3) After conducting further research, it turns out dogs weren't even invented until 1908.

Isn't it the best when you have fun?! Good luck x

Aww thank you so much! Embarrassed

My second round flash fiction this summer was extremely and uncharacteristically stressful and so I'm elated that I had so much fun. I hope you had fun too and good luck to you, I'm noting your username so I can look up your story when we're allowed to post! Tongue
Thanks! I cannot wait to start reading and will check yours for sure :)

This was so much fun! Not sure I nailed the genre, I was in group 77 (I think?!),  horror, repeat, opening an umbrella. Of course I had an amazing idea to hone the genre...72 hours too late :-)  Still, I'm so glad I joined in,  I'm looking forward to reading the stories
