I don't see a thread for this, so I'm starting one for the SSC round three-ers.

I'm in group 4 - comedy / a shopping spree / a teacher.

Which is weirdly close to my first ever NYCM prompt which was comedy / a midlife crisis / an art teacher...

Heat 1, suspense, an appointment, a cat owner.

I can work with this.

Romcom. Which I'm neither here nor there about, but was over the moon at 5am when I saw I hadn't got horror or pol-sat.

Heat 6--Sci-Fi, a promotion, a repairman.

It's a bit eery, because I got Sci-Fi in the first round and wrote about a repairman and a promotion in the second round for a spy story. My previous stories are intersecting in the third round.

We're heatmates! I like the prompts. They're vague enough to take in a lot of directions, but unique enough to be inspiring. However, the weather is perfect, and I am finding myself extremely distracted by the beautiful outdoors! The story idea I settled on is dark, and the light, colorful springtime is not helping me get to a dark place. I've been calling the muses, but they too are out enjoying the sunshine. HELP.

Tell me about it! It should have been raining today, not tomorrow. I have a first sentence, anyway...

I think this will be my first real genre-blender since I never get the ones I really want, historical and spy, and suspense lends itself to those anyway. My cats are all smug, too.

I always hope for horror or thriller, and suspense lends itself well to those as well. Actually, now that you mention it... Aren't all good stories suspenseful? I'm moving along now that I've locked myself in my room and closed the blinds. Maybe I'll play some rain noises too, just to help set the mood. Best of luck!

How's everyone doing today? Progress report?  I'm short of the word count and could probably use them, but I'm going to submit it as is. Sci-fi is not my forte, but I figure anything helps keep the writing muscles from completely atrophying.  I want them to work in 30 years when my kids are grown and I'm retired!

I have a second draft with some final beta comments to act on when I get hom. Not in love with it, but the thought of starting again is just...no.

Do we have a count of how many forumites there are in this round? It's been eerily quiet!

I have a rough draft.  And I feel like all this research I've done will not matter in the slightest because this is literally the most boring thing I've ever written. LOL   Why did I have to jinx myself and say I didn't want historical fiction?!

SciFi, Promotion, a Repairman

This one was definitely an exercise... I find SciFi worldbuilding under 1500 words to be super challenging lol so we shall see!

You're not alone :) Same heat and mine was a last-minute write, and then I ended up 800 words over. You can do it!!

This is my heat, too. I've never made it this far, so I'm in uncharted territory. I wrote like a fiend yesterday and today, and I actually had two stories in the hopper at one point before settling on one. Good luck!

I do not know how people get two stories done. I almost never have time to even edit in detail. Round 2 I barely got in under the deadline.

No one said they were good. haha

I had two really good ideas and just threw them together. Had a general idea when I needed to stop, but not strict on word counts. Then I let me wife read them and tell me which one to go to work on.

I have older kids, and there's a pandemic...easy to find the time.

Have to admit, I usually toss and turn after getting the prompt, and ideas are racing through my head.

So, for Round 3, I got Heat 3, aaaaaand my fave genre ever: Ghost Story!

Ghost Story
Compromise
Animal Trainer

Reviewing for the very last time and submitting; I'm exhausted, but this one was fun. :-)

I have NOTHING to do (except take the dogs out; I swear my beagle's bladder is the size of a pinto bean), and I never finish except at the last minute.

If you got through that prompt without making one Tiger King/Carole Baskin reference, you are my hero! :)

Ha! That's too funny....as soon as I saw the prompt, I texted my sister that I thought I had the perfect sequel to Joe & Carole's saga! Happily, I came up with a slightly better idea. LOL

I'm also in H3, the Ghost story/compromise/an animal trainer group.

I gotta admit, Friday and yesterday I was really frustrated trying to come up with a good idea. My round 1 genre was ghost story too, and then my theme for round 2 was haunted! HOW MANY GHOSTY THINGS CAN ONE WRITER THINK UP DANGIT.

But it started to gel up late last night, and then I spent today editing. So in the end it was okay. I'm sure there will be even stiffer competition this round, with so many great writers here. :)

Sci-fi/ a repairman/ a promotion.
I don’t think I will be troubling the scorers.
I detest sci-fi, it normally seems to me like some other genre set in another galaxy. But then, I don’t really like the concept of genre at all. It’s a miracle that I got this far ....
And why the reduced word count? Why does short story transform into flash fiction at the halfway mark? It’s like changing from football to tennis at half time.
And what is it with the synopsis? What’s that got to do with anything?
There .... I just thought I’d come out with the bitter and twisted stuff before I officially lose.

Seriously though ... good luck to everyone. It’s an honour to be in such company.

Well, they had to cram a third round in between 2 and final, though why the cut wasn't to 1750 instead of forcing the final round to be flash I don't know.

I'm a fan of ghost stories, but this was my first time writing one. Looking forward to reading how other's interpreted the prompt! :D

I'm in Heat 3: Ghost story / an animal trainer / compromise

I've never made it this far before -- and it was an intense 48 hours that felt more like 12. Never tried this genre before and must admit, I enjoyed it!

Best of luck to everyone!
