Yeah?  I signed up.  Maybe they won't have a round while I'm on vacation.

I'm just Pavlov's Writer at this point.  You can't imagine how far I've come since I started these.

I don't have the attention span for that.

Also, I don't know where I'll be living/working past May so how do I even plan my life for this?

This was my blockade as well. I may be starting a new job in the spring, which will have a much heavier workload than my current position. I have no idea if I'll have time to write at all in April/May

Jump in, enjoy the water, and let May worry about itself.

Is it tighter timeframes / more words too? Round 2 = 3 days, 2000 words. Didn't round 2 used to be fewer words than that? [EDIT: Nope, it was always that, now just with added 1,250 round. Yikes.]

I didn't do this comp last year because of prior commitments, this year I'm learning screenwriting is waaay more my thing. Microfiction is fun because it's like a scene. But having done two years of FFC, I'm really feeling the weight of prose. And that was Flash, let alone 2.5K!

Have fun everyone! Enjoy the 4-round chaos xxx

WOW!
Although it looks like it's top 5 for all three rounds this time. Didn't the semi-finals used to be top 3?

I'm in. I don't know how NOT to be. I've really enjoyed what I've learned about myself as a writer through these comps, and SSC is the first comp I made it to a final in. I want to repeat!

I think this is it exactly.

Not participating is not an option. There is no way I say, "meh, not this time." Why would I ever do that? Too busy? I've gotten stories turned in while busy before.

And win or lose (always lose), I do learn something from the experience. Not just through judge/forum feedback. I learn while thinking about the prompt, drafting a terrible draft, agonizing on Sunday, and revising until it's something I'm proud of.

Why would I ever get tired of that?

Yussssssssssss. Before I entered SSC on a whim in 2018, I had never written anything outside of a screenplay in college and a whole lotta fanfic. Two years later, I have nine short stories, three of them published, and it all came from these comps and the forum feedback. Even if I get knocked out in round one, that's one more story than I had before.

Maybe, because the competition has grown massively, they’ve added the extra round to thin down the number of finalists? Therefore, less to judge in the final round? That’s my logical response to it 🤷‍♀️

Sort of a drill-sergeant relationship, yes. NYC Midnight says, "WRITE!" and we say, "YES SIR! HOW MANY WORDS, SIR? WHICH GENRE, SIR?"

And yes, we're trapped here, but there's Ferrero Rochet, so...

EDIT: Can't believe I misspelled it! It's Ferrero Rocher.

I am waiting to see my feedback from the judges on MFC before making a determination if I am going to be participating in this.

Why? Because if the judges say something like "your internal monologue should have been italicized" after our being unable to submit formatted text, I may have to flip a table.

(A judge judged my first submission for not putting internal monologue in italics. Another character reacted to the spoken text that this judge believed should have been internal monologue.)

On the plus side, I think that the MFC is the only one that asks you to paste the story itself into the window and that's what messes with formatting. The FFC and SFC allow you to upload a file, so you shouldn't have to worry about that particular problem.

TABLE should have been capitalized as the first occurrence of the object.  -5 points.

The $72 NZD stung a little, but short story is really what I’m here for, just killing time with flash and micro 😆

This will be my first time as a second time competitor too, as last year’s SSC was my first NYCM.

And yes, I am now trapped here forever also.

It's going to feel really long now after flash! As in, the word count.

$72 NZD? Ouch.

True story--I hesitated to enter the 3-day novel writing contest earlier this year because they were asking for $60. As it turns out, since they're based in Canada, that meant $60 Canadian dollars. YAY! I entered.

I'm in. I've decided to use NYCM to throw me into foreign territories with their prompts/objects and see what crazy sh*t comes out of it!

I'm honing in as a writer on Sci-Fi so I've made the decision that whatever genre they give me will be blended into Sci-Fi for my story.  Romantic Comedy/Sci-Fi?  Crime Caper/Sci-Fi?  These practically write themselves! lol

My problem wouldn't be that I was not allowed to submit formatted text. If I would get the feedback that my internal monologue was not italicized, given that we were unable to italicize it, that is where I would flip said table.

Same but with comedy. I used to dread getting horror. Now I can’t wait to get it so I can do comedy/horror!

I'm hijacking this thread to point out that I just now looked at the NYC Midnight logo for the first time, and I noticed the hand holding half-story pages, half-hourglass, and I was like, "Ohhh, I get it now!"

That's me! I barely recognise the diffident, imposter-ridden writer that I was when I entered the world of NYC in SSC earlier this year. The challenge of genre writing has been great and since then I have become a published author and poet and I have earned tens of dollars LOL

Most of all I value the friendship and support of writers that I first met through these forums.

As long as I've got some cash in the bank for the fee I'll be in. :-D

Personally, I'm stoked about the extra round. That is one more story that I could potentially write and submit to publishers. The more we are writing the more we are getting out of the contest, right?
