Mystery. I am in the middle of reading a 12 book mystery series. I still have no idea how to write a mystery. This is definitely a sleep on it kind of prompt.

Romance.
NYCM must love how Lipto does love, cuz I dance this jig every damn year.
Sigh. Alright. Let's count our gratitudes. Romance offers a lot of room in which to work.
Hey. No political satire assignments this round. That normal?

Suspense/Fire Escape/Mattress
I checked the other people in my heat, and one of them is Sarah Martin, the 2017 Short Story Comp champ. This is the second time we've ended up in the same heat together: two overall winners head-to-head! Oh yeah, with 23 other really talented people too! <grumble grumble, damn luck of the draw>

OMG - I'm completely thrown. Of all the genre possibilities that I'd have loved to get, hated to get, and thought I would get...Sci-fi wasn't one of them. That genre wasn't even remotely on my mind so I honestly don't even know how to feel about it haha. I don't read sci-fi nor do I really watch it (unless Hunger Games and Star Wars are sci-fi). Guess my first google search will be "How do I write sci-fi?" I'm group 14 and my other elements are a fashion show and a chain.

I got Comedy (again), a temp agency, a motor.
Don't like any of the ideas I have so far, plus I'm out tonight and all day tomorrow so God knows what I'll be submitting.
Last challenge I tried comedy/drama but I think that was risky. Got 10 points but feel like I should have gone more full-on comedy (one of the judges even said as much).

OK. I did a read/rewrite. And it ended up longer. Argh! I think I may need to take a break and take a fresh look later. // UPDATE: I'm down to "only" being 187 words too long. But I used to be 280+ too long. So I made some progress. Break time!
I will say, I went back and reread my feedback from the last round and am trying to keep that in mind as I write this time. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. But they had some valid comments so... there's that.

Thriller, Nature Reserve, Handcuffs.
At least there are no horses or massage tables 😁 |
A handcuffed horse on a massage table in a nature reserve? Might be a little over the top.

Horror, Pharmacy, Welding Mask
I've taken the most generic approach to these prompts, but I think I have a solid idea.
First draft clicks in at 1600 words, time for some serious trimming and refinement.

Think Mission Impossible. I prefer to think about the series, not the movies, because I'm old and remember them and they're not nearly as obnoxious as the Tom Cruise movies.
Much as with rounds one and two I'm at one day with a few ideas and no words. The first draft will get written around 2:00 tomorrow afternoon if history is a guide.

Ugh, so far I haven't got into the writing at all this weekend... so much going on... am pregnant and going through a tough time with my husband which has left me quite down and unmotivated... plus just tired in general and sleeping for Ireland at the minute. BUT... I am hoping to get into the story after I eat. I have written about 400 words of a first draft so it's not hopeless. Just not in the mood to write a horror. Or do anything. Whinge over! (swaps complaining bracelet to other wrist!) Ok now I'll start pep-talking myself. You can do this! Etc etc... Yeah it'll be ok... mightn't be a great story but I'll try and finish a first draft soon and then a second later and what the hey, we're not always in the mood to write, right? Just got to do it anyway. I WILL enjoy completing it. Good luck all!

Ohh man I'm 700 words along and commiserate all too well. I hope that you were able to edit it into something you like a little more. Tbh I had no idea I could resent a piece of furniture and its history so much. Good job wrangling a hell of a weird prompt!

omfg thank you BOTH. I'm glad it's not just me. I've gotten some bizarre pairings before (like fishing pole and a statue) but never anything so outright juxtaposed. Surprisingly difficult, but I guess that's what this challenge is for! :)
