I'm disappointed. Apparently I mistakenly submitted late by looking at a different time clock, so I had no points.
I had a great start of 9 Points, and got some great feedback on my second story.
I will not make that mistake again.
In short, a lack of attention to detail got me.

Kinda feel for the tied people that did not make it into the next round. Don't see why they don't just let them compete as well.

Came in third in my group overall. Scored 9 points the first round, and 15 the second. Even though I had a lot more confidence in my second story, I was still surprised to see it come in first place. Here's to hoping I pull a doable genre Friday, lol.

Good showing this time - but only mediocre 1st challenge, so I am *6th* in group by a mere two points. Congrats to the folks from Group 53 who will be writing this weekend, and to everyone who advanced!!!!

I missed out on making it to the next round by 1 point, and now I’m a little disappointed. Still, I’m ecstatic that I got any points on my second story at all; I was afraid it might not have fit in enough with the genre I was given. If I hadn’t missed out by just the one point, I wouldn’t have such mixed feelings right now. 😕

8 points in round two! Not bad, but with my goose egg in round one, that's not getting me through. Good thing, actually - I can't imagine trying to do this and NANO simultaneously, plus I have a writing convention this weekend...

9 points in the first round and 6 in this round. It wasn't enough to qualify, but I'm glad to get points for both stories in my first time writing anything that I submitted "officially". Time to go sleep away the heavy disappointment.
Good luck in the upcoming rounds to all of those who qualified! I'll see you next year!

I'm moving on! Just barely as I'm in 5th in my group, but what surprised me was since I got 8 points on my first story, I figured I was doomed as I got Political Satire for my second story and wasn't super confident with it...and it got 13 points!
Not bad for someone a bit rusty and who is participating for the first time! I also COMPLETELY forgot about the results coming in this week due to work stuff, so it was a nice surprise!
QUESTION: If we move on to the third round, which means new groups, do our scores basically go back to zero for that round or does what we have now (in my case, a 21) carry over and factor into our third round score?
Congrats to EVERYONE who competed...whether you got first or last, you created something and are already ahead of those who chose not to enter!

Well done to everyone who's moving on. I'm through in second place overall, which I'm well pleased with as it's my first time doing any kind of competition. My second story got a 10, which I was surprised with as I didn't really deliver on the comedy aspect.
It will be very tough in the next round and I'm out doing things for most of the weekend so won't have much time to dedicate to it, so I will just try to have fun with it and see what happens.

Made it into the next round! I got a great result round one and then thought I'd tanked myself in the second by attempting to write it while jetlagged and between appointments meaning it felt rushed and with no polish time.
Shocked it scraped through.
Congratulations to everyone else who made it. Keep powering on because I'm seeing only great work in the writing forum

0 and 14. Just missed, which is fine. My first round story was garbage and probably deserved negative points for making them read it. Happy my second round story was 2nd as I really liked it even though I had to heavily edit it because the first draft was 800 words over--it's been re-written to about 2200 words and may be submitted soon to a bunch of places. I bungled the first round last year too, need to work on that. Short Story is where I do better, but I like the challenge of FF. Good luck to those moving on.

Well I flunked the second challenge, 13 and 2. I guess Fairy Tale isn't my genre. It will be interesting to see what the feedback says. I'm a little disappointed because the story I wrote for this one, I really like the concept and want to expand on it, but if I'm honest I'm also kind of relieved because I had some plans this weekend!

Well, I scored a 6 in Ch1 and a 13 in Ch2. Unfortunately, a total score of 19 doesn't get me to Ch3. Wop Wop. In fact, it's only good for 8th place.
I'm somewhat disappointed, but it was a great learning experience. I feel like I hit my groove with Ch2, and I'll have to enter again next summer.

Missed by one point with a ten and a twelve. Which annoys me a bit as my r1 story should have placed higher to begin with, but then the highest I''e placed in any of these is 3rd in r1 of last year's FFC with the worst story I've done for any of them. The better my story, the less the judges like it. (The two i've done that scored worst, I rewrote and doubled down on everything the judges didn't like and both sold their first time being submitted, so I suppose that does mean I know I did something right with these!)

So excited, I nearly forgot about the results and was just puking there with damned morning sickness and then I was logging on to my email and I remembered about the results! My first flash fiction attempt and with beginner's luck I got a 14 and a 12 and so 2nd in my group. So happy. And apprehensive - will the creative juices flow this weekend? I'm meant to be going to my cousin's wedding on Saturday but I was already thinking of not going because of this sickness. Writing should take my mind off it! Well done to those who got through and commiserations to those who wrote fab stories and got pipped at the post.

So for my first FF contest I landed #15 in my group, not advancing, but pleased for the experience. Also made easier by the hope of moving forward in Microfiction...we’ll see!
The writer in my heat (18) who placed #6 had some really well-reviewed stories. Surprised he didn’t advance and if he’s reading this... know I feel for you, especially after that super strong comedy entry last round! Most if not all of the top 5 didn’t post their stories, I’m sure they were great - congrats!

I'm grateful to have grabbed 4th in my group after what I felt was a poor showing in C1. Ironically, I am certain my score in C1 was a 6. Certain because it's the lowest score I've ever received for Flash and I was bummed out bigly.
Now it shows a 7. It wouldn't change anything since I'm 2 points above the next person in my group, but it is strange.
Anywho, congrats to everyone moving on. May the prompt gods be ever in your favor. For those that aren't, good show. You came, did the thing, and now have 2 stories that you didn't have before as well as (hopefully) a boatload of peer review that will help you polish them up and get them out in the world. They deserve to be read!

I'm excited I made it to round 3, but I'm also exhibiting at WizardWorld Con this weekend in Austin selling my graphic novel I wrote last year. The con lasts all day Saturday and Sunday... So, it is going to be a very busy weekend!!

As expected with my Round 1 (2 points), not moving on this year. I had hoped for more points this round (cause human), but I'm happy to get some points: 6. (I know there is a lot of world-wide talent on here.)
Congrats to everyone moving on this round! Especially from group 49!

My group 60 had a 3-way tie for first place with 28s which seems like a fun coincidence! (Well, fun because I'm one of them. ) So the 1st & 3rd place writers flipped, and the 2nd place writer was the same both times.

What I find interesting are the number of total goose eggs. Generally at least ten in every group, usually more, so somewhere around 30-40% sign up, pay their dinarius, and don't bother submitting? There are other possibilities, but coming up with a zero twice?
I finally checked my first round score. My non-adventure got seven, my non-romance 12, and 19 was enough for a two way tie for second overall and third on the score board. Pretty laid back group, on the whole.
I'm pretty surprised, but not knowing the first round score helped me in round 2, so I'll continue that in similar contests.

I got 12 points in R1 and now 10 pts in R2. Within my group, 22 puts me in 4th and I'm moving on :)
I'm on the cusp, but I knew I had a good chance after starting off with 12. I don't expect I'll get to round 4, but I'll keep riding this out for the time being.
This is my first time doing any writing contest (aside from one I entered in 6th grade where I won by default as the only entry) and no matter what, it's been good experience. I don't know that I'll be back next year, but I'm glad to be here now

Hey, I doubled my points--from one to two!
(Just nobody tell me how many people dropped out from my group; I don't suppose 14th out of 15 would really be an improvement on 15th out of 30. )
But it was fun, and I'm looking forward to the microfiction results!

Yeah, I wish NYCMid differentiated between 0s and "failing to submit"s. It's data that could be easily released without any additional work on their part, and it could help us better determine the strength of our writing in the context of this competition (did I really place 8th among 30 writers? or did I place 8th out of 17? Sorta makes a difference in how I view my performance)

9 points + 15 points = writing this weekend! Pleasantly surprised by my Round 2 score, I really thought it could go either way.
Good luck to everyone moving on and, in the event you didn't advance, congratulations on creating two new pieces of fiction to send out into the world. Dust those stories off and start submitting!

I'm remiss in not pointing out that a pair of zeros shouldn't discourage anyone, it's just a way of saying there are areas of writing that need improvement. Even if the judging is skewed, and we've all seen that, if you look critically at your work you could make it better. The time limit almost grantees it.
As Robert McKee likes to say, 90% of what anyone writes is crap. You just need to keep at it until you get to that 10%.
As always, I'm above average. At least 95% of what I write is crap. The goal is to nurture that last 5% so I can get to it sooner.

13 points in R1 and 14 in R2 - very happy to be writing this weekend!
I went hard into a genre mashup in R2 (got mystery, wrote comedy/satire with a bit of mystery) which has emboldened me to cross genres again in future!

Ever since I ignored the genre requirement my scores have doubled. My action/adventure was a drama, my romantic comedy was sci-fi.
Go figure. Writing what the prompts want and throwing in a few tropes to check the genre box seems to work well.

This made me laugh. :)
If I decide to do these next year, I may consider that.
My decision on that will likely be based on the feedback I get from the judges.

I got 2 points in R1 and 10 points in R2. Still happy even though I'm not through as it shows improvement. I have never entered this competition before and I was straight away given a submarine as location, which completely threw me, hence doing so terribly in R1. I feel like now I know what the competition is about, and that I'm capable of 10 points in a round, I might try again next year and see my luck! :) People got through with less points in individual rounds so if I get given some good prompts, I might have a chance! I'm in the microfiction contest as well so hoping that goes okay later this month!

1st place finish in Round 1 was exciting. After I submitted my Round 2 story, I went back and forth between thinking I had nailed it again and was sure I'd have another 1st place finish, to feeling like I had totally screwed it up and was going to get a zero. But like I tell my kids, it's never as good as you hope, or as bad as you fear... 8th place finish in round 2. Good enough to finish 4th overall and advance. Whew.

And for all you newbies, if you're feeling intimidated by advancing with a lower total, don't be! I've seen people who got 18-19 in round one not only advance to the finals, but place in the top ten overall. A lot of the scores are dependent on genre assignment and subjective judging, not to mention who ends up in your heat as competition. Trust me, a lot of the people who got 29's and 30's (36 writers) won't get out of the next round...

I'm stunned to be moving on with 30 points, particularly since a) this is my first time in this contest, and b) I loathed my genre assignment for round two. I guess, according to the last two posters, scoring 30 means I don't have a good shot at making it to round four? Still pretty proud of myself for making it this far, and hoping for the best despite a busy weekend upcoming.

Nobody is trying to rain on anyone's accomplishments. Thirty is something to be proud of! Pat yourself on the back, treat yourself to whatever you enjoy, but get over it before the prompts drop Friday night because at that point it's a new game.
My advice is to make this round's piece better than both of the others put together. How cool for someone to take the whole thing the first time they compete! I'll be in your cheering section.

Its been said before but I'll say it again.
THE JUDGING IN THIS CONTEST IS BANANAS.
ACTUAL. BANANAS.
I'm through. After coming second in round two. I'm delighted. But I really don't think I deserved it to be honest. There were other stories in my group I thought were better. Mine was a story which was .... sloppily executed and missed the prompts. And I was rightly called out on the forum for just that.
Here it is: http://docs.google.com/document/d/16o5DVcFiw6fDIgmWzznL9KWgHTn0sei18_AA8wY6wqo/edit?usp=sharing" rel="nofollow - 'Video Arcane'
Then in the first round I came 11th. Not too bad. But frankly I think it was one of the strangest and most 'out there' things I've ever written and I think it should have placed higher. People liked it on the forum.
But maybe it was too odd for the judges tastes?
Here it is: http://docs.google.com/document/d/1AEtZCifu5rc7sOAPYtDdkNhWkybCTcmfK212rgBYNMg/edit?usp=sharing" rel="nofollow - "It’s over Adam"
In short, I think there's an inversely proportional graph that can be made between how crap you think your work is and how high it places.
And to do well in this competition (I think) - write fast, blend genres and include lots of action.
Also. Lots of perfect thirties out there - WELL DONE YOU LOT!

I know several Canadians, and work with one. They all cleverly disguise themselves as normal people, and if you didn't know better might confuse them for...anyone else.
The one I work with was someone disappointed she couldn't vote for Voldemort, though. Satire? In Canada? Who would have thought it.
