Haha, ya I am a day a head of a bunch of you!  Still, I have had them send out feedback sooner than this - or later, hehe.

Does anyone know if we will have feedback on round 1 before we start round 2?
Thanks!

Feedback isn't guaranteed before round 2, but your placing in round 1 is

It used to be that we would sometimes not receive the feedback until after we wrote, but not happened for quite sometime.

Yeah, most of the time feedback comes before but not always. And there's always a high chance that the overall results for each group won't come out today either (I am betting on a 24 hour delay, which is typical).

I think they "fixed" that 24 hr delay by changing the release of results day from Tuesday to Wens.  HA!  I guess they figured since they were always releasing them on Wens anyway....but they haven't been nearly so late since they switched to Wens.

At least I have a mountain of school work and ice cream to cry over when this goes south. Nothing mends a writer’s broken spirit like Differential Equations, 25 page readings and half a pint of Ben and Jerry’s.

Here in Central Indiana it has been a nightly cricket SYMPHONY. And I too just had to get one away from one of the cats who was chasing it throughout the living room.

This was the story I most liked that I'd written. I'm kind of shocked that I got NO points.

So the results came out. Does anyone else's still show as In Progress or is there another status that should be showing in Submittable. I'm asking mainly because I'm concerned that I submitted this one incorrectly and it wasn't properly received or disqualified for some reason.

I got 3 points. I calculate That’s 3 more than my story deserve. Does it mean I have no reasonable chance at round 3? Because I know I won’t get 15 on challenge 2. Well, unless the rest of my group forgets to submit, but that seems unlikely.

Got a 7, which is right smack dab in the middle. Really disappointed in myself, but I guess could have been a lot worse, considering I had no experience whatsoever in the genre. I'll just thank my lucky stars, pay attention to the feedback, and pray to God I draw a better lot next round.

That's how it always is. My favorite stories are always the ones no one else likes. Just remember there's an audience that will love it as much as you do, but apparently just not the 3 judges who read it :(

Thanks, I'm so curious about the feedback now! I've written much worse stories for NYC Midnight that got excellent feedback. So this should be an adventure.

You have every right to be emotional!
Someone just told me the other day that the stories you like don’t score well and the ones you’re iffy on do better.  I don’t know if it’s true, but in lieu of being able to offer a hug or something, it’s the best I could think of to help ease the sting.  This contest is a weird thing.

I was just thinking the same thing. Every time I feel somewhat confident, I underperform to my expectations. When I’m nervous as hell, I score better. My theory is that the confidence leads to less time self-critiquing with any objectivity, and less editing that was ultimately needed.

I’m in group 14 and got 8th so 8 pts. Of course I hoped to be higher but honestly, for my first time trying this out, I did pretty well!  I’m proud of my story and it got me out of a writing funk, and that’s worth more than any amount of points.  I’m excited for the feedback and to write for round 2...no matter what you placed, congrats for doing it and putting your writing out there!!

I intended to go to bed when I saw I had no points.

But I got a point and now I literally have no idea what to do with myself. My jaw was open long enough that it's sore. This isn't my genre and it isn't my usual type of writing. I don't even have words right now.

Barbara, hit it hard with challenge 2! Maybe you'll get an assignment you can really light up the sky with! You can do it if I can!

I've been in this competition and in this forum for a few years now. I've scored 15 and I've scored 0 and everything in between. I've scored zero very recently and high early on. What I am saying is that it is all about the prompts, not simply your skill. Yes, if  you are going to score well here, you have to be a good writer, but even good writers do poorly in some challenges because the prompts just were not in their favor. I wouldn't want anyone to go forward here thinking they will always do better and better. Maybe that has happened to a few, but most of us will go up and down in the challenges. Be confident in your own writing ability. Be humble enough to learn from others here. And most of all, keep coming back. Congratulations on getting 8 points.

I appreciate it, but I am wondering sincerely if I submitted mine properly. It's showing as 'In Progress' and has been since I submitted it. If I could just get someone to confirm what status theirs shows - it'd put my mind at ease.

Either way, I'm seriously disappointed in myself and tempted to just give up. I'm out 40 bucks and have proof I just need to end it here.

10 points for my spa, spa, licorice story. I will take that! It was written for kids so the judges aren’t my target audience anyway. My 9 year old loved it haha! Good luck in round 2, everyone!

Three points for me as well. Did you advance to the third challenge last time? 3 is more than I expected so I’m pleased. But I don’t have any idea what combined score lets you advance past the second challenge. I think they intentionally make it extra nerve wracking.

They all say "in progress." My Submittable is cluttered with stories and screenplays from these comps across the years.

Do not be disappointed in yourself. You did something amazing by creating something out of nothing in 48 hours time. It's not easy. And I've done enough of these contests to know that the judging can be all over the place. Writing is such a subjective game, in this contest and outside, too. Stay the course, and just have fun writing something this weekend. You can do this. Chin up. Heart I'll be rooting for you this next challenge.

I think of this contest the way runners think of marathons. There are a few runners who expect to place in a marathon, but most pay that $40 for the experience, not the medal. Think of this as a chance to have experienced something new! Not everything we spend has to have tangible results.

In other news, I'm a slush pile reader at a magazine, and hers something that has taught me: good stories get rejected. Great authors get rejected. Amazing stuff... gets rejected! All. The. Time. It wasn't right for the magazine, it wasn't right for the genre, it was too late at night for a reader to properly appreciate it, there were too many other amazing stories (the most common explanation). Don't give up from one rejection, even one that stings massively. Wallow, eat ice cream, and then vote to go again!!

Noiryn, I totally get it. I got no points as well despite being encouraged in writing by one of my favorite authors, I write for a living, and yet I find myself reconsidering my entire career choice and suddenly thinking I shouldn't go freelance after all.

It stings to get no points at all. NONE?!

Anyway. We paid the money, so might as well give it a shot the second time ... here's to doing better next round.

Five points have any hope of progress?

Posted By: Sammayne
Date Posted: 12 Sep 2019 at 5:46am
I just wanted to say, for those feeling bad about not getting any points; Moby Dick, The Bell Jar and Animal Farm are among a sh*tton of books that were rejected at some point. There are a multitude of reasons why you may not have made the top 15 this time, and many of those reasons are NOT you not being a good writer or not producing a good story.

And, even if this work wasn’t your best, the freaking testicular/ovarian fortitude it takes to enter something like that is something to be respected and celebrated. Trying, and putting yourself out there is super hard, and anyone who does is a boss regardless of scores.

I'm disappointed about my 6-point finish (10th place). I've been making some money writing for the last few years, and I thought my submission was fairly original. So this sorta stings.

That being said, without being able to read any of the others in my Group, save one, it's admittedly hard to determine the strength of the competition.

Maybe the judges thought I "missed the mark" with the comedy angle. I actually hope that turns out to be the case. Hopefully I can shake this off and do my best this weekend.

Special congrats to John Adams for "Even Bad Guys Have Good Days in Excelsior City'!" a story which I really enjoyed reading, for your awesome score!

Also, congrats to ChristiLB for kicking butt in my Group with "The Engagement!" Well done!

Well, I scored 6 points so I'm right there with you!

The results from last year show that the standard cut-off range for 5th place (the last people who move on to the next round) is between high teens and low twenties, so realistically you and I would have to score VERY highly for this weekend's stories to have a chance of moving on, BUT...it's possible.

I hope you feel better instead of worse!

For those who are disappointed with a low score or no score, and feel like giving up - Don't! You won't make it into the third round if you don't submit anything in round 2! But you might get great scores in the next one.

Three points for me as well. Did you advance to the third challenge last time? 3 is more than I expected so I’m pleased. But I don’t have any idea what combined score lets you advance past the second challenge. I think they intentionally make it extra nerve wracking.

No, I didn’t make it to the next round last year. In my heat last year, I think the top five ended at like 16? And I ended with 13. Think about that for a second. First round I got 3, second round I got 10!
It depends on how many of the top people this round get good scores next round. So it is possible, albeit slim that we could make it to the next round if we do fabulous this weekend.

There’s something to think about for next year or my next contest that is like this. If I score good in one genre, but not the other, can I compare the two and see what maybe I did differently? Or maybe I just don’t understand some genres and need to see what it’s about? Always work on the craft!

My first time in this competition (and definitely first time writing a Ghost Story) and I got 11 points! What a surprise and a treat.

Thank you good people for your feedback, and I have read so many of your stories also. It is hard putting your stuff out there.

[By the way, I had a dream last night that one of my judges was Peter Dinklage, and he sent his feedback in the form of a video, and he clearly just overdubbed my name and sent the same useless, generic drivel to all of the entrants in my heat. "Well done [Michael], a real cracking story full of good ideas" (and so on). Weeeeird...]

Either way, I'm seriously disappointed in myself and tempted to just give up. I'm out 40 bucks and have proof I just need to end it here.

Hey Noiryn, I just checked mine to verify for you and mine also says "in-progress" - hope that helps!

Showing “in progress” on submittable means nothing! It says that about stories I’ve written years ago.
As long as you got a confirmation your story was received about 2-3 days after submission, then it was.

Am I the only one who has NO email that scores were in? Luckily I checked the site. I’ve been getting all their other emails and it’s not in my spam either. Weird.

Someone did the math in another thread. I believe it was 31 writers in groups 1-26 and 30 writers in groups 27-125.
