So it looks like NYCM has created a new contest for Microfiction!!

From the website:
The 250-word Microfiction Challenge is a competition that challenges writers around the world to create very short stories (250 words max.) based on genre, action, and word assignments in 24 hours. In the 1st Round (October 4-5, 2019), writers are placed randomly in heats and are assigned a genre, action, and word assignment.  Writers have 24 hours to craft an original 250-word story (maximum) in their assigned genre, with the assignedaction taking place, and incorporating the assigned word.  The judges choose a top 10 in each heat to advance to the 2nd Round (November 22-23, 2019) where writers receive new assignments and again have 24 hours to craft original stories.  Judges select the top 5 writers in each heat from the 2nd Round to advance to the Final Round of the competition taking place January 10-11, 2020 where writers will receive their final assignment of the competition.  Feedback from the judges is provided for every submission and there are  http://www.nycmidnight.com/Competitions/MFC/250/Prizes.htm" rel="nofollow - thousands in cash and prizes  for the winners.  Sound like fun?  Join the competition below and get ready for October 4th!

Who's in?! I think I may check it out.

I thought I was done with these contests but hey, 24 hrs, 250 words, i can't resist, I'm in. The best part is that the first 24 hour cycle includes a Fri night when i have to attend a political fundraiser followed by a Saturday afternoon when i am hosting a Swing Left letter writing party from 1-5pm. So basically I will be rushing to try to write in about 6 hours total writing time (more if I stay up all night).

Yes! This new challenge is right down my alley!! I've done 1000 word challenges (Flash) and 500 word challenges (Tidbits and Furious) so this 250 word short story challenge feels like an obvious next step! (Though, some day I'll have to finish a full length book ...)

I saw this on FB today, and I see the price is cheaper than it is for the Flash Fiction contest, but for me, getting two guaranteed rounds of participation/judging/feedback was the real draw for the FF contest.

$25 to write a 250-word story, with the overwhelming likelihood of it ending there doesn't seem as enticing to me.

I’m so down. Last week I got an email forward from a magazine I’d previously published in looking for 350-500 word stories for the next issue and I didn’t have anything near that short to submit. Looking forward to it, and not AT ALL addicted. 😛

Ooo, so tempting! I'll have to check dates since I have some work travel coming up, but if available, I'm in. Microfiction intrigues me, have only tried it once or twice. I think it would be good for writers like me, who like to use twenty words where three or four would do.
Thanks for the heads up, Steph!

I didn't even hesitate, or look at the price or anything, I just signed up this afternoon the moment that I learned this thing existed.
I'm also doing the Short Screenplay for the first time the following week.
This means that I'll be writing for NYCM 3 out of the next 4 weekends.
Well, it keeps me off the streets, anyway.

It’s interesting to me that the prizes are less for shorter works. Not that any of us do this for the money, but writing something succinct in 250 words is so hard.... especially with THREE given prompts. I probably will join in for the hell of it, but am not sure how I’ll feel about it once prompts drop. 250 words is aoooooo little....but I love NYCM.... and 2 rounds, so hey, why not?

Noop - I'll be on a plane for the first quarter of the first challenge. I have a hunch I won't alight from an international flight fresh and inspired to write. Hopefully they do this one again - sounds like a lot of fun. Good luck all!

Im actually really excited for this! I think its going to be a lot of fun and I'm really interested to see where my favorite forum posters will take their stories with such a restrictive word limit. Im glad they got rid of a couple of the genres though, as certain genre assignments would be impossible for micro.

I'm in! Had to miss FF due to lack of $$, but I can do this one. I have written a 75-word story every month for 9 1/2 years, for my SFF forum's challenges, and quite a number of 300-word stories for the quarterly one for 8 1/2 years, so I'm primed. LOL

Bring it on!

Now to go and find out what genres got removed, as mentioned above....

I don't think I'm going to enter... I've an orchestra concert that day which means I'll be away from the house involved with rehearsing and performing from say 1pm to 10.30 or 11pm... and it is always physically exhausting.. plus I have a couple of students that morning too. We don't get the prompts til 5am here so I def won't be able to start it on the Friday night.
But on the other hand it's only 250 words..... hmm, I'm going to sleep on it. Will only enter if I feel the urge because those orchestra days really are tiring!

Super excited because the wait to get feedback and placing will be super short! It will also be easier to give more people feedback because burnout will take longer to set in.
But oof, starting at midnight on the 4th? Theres no way I'll be getting any sleep! I would almost prefer to start 12pm easterm then turn in at 12 PM on the 5th. Anyone else?
