Good Folks.

The word I got from NYCm is that there is NOT going to be a fix for the character limit in posts until there is a forum upgrade and there is no timeline for that at this time.

I know it is annoying and confusing to have the Master Lists broken into 6 pieces. It's a bit of a headache for Steph & I to have to man (& wo-man) three lists each as well.

Next challenge would people prefer that the Master Lists linked out to a google doc?
It would require an extra click to view/use the Master List, but everything else would remain the same - comment with your link to get added, etc. The doc would be read only - you'd be able to click the links to the stories but not add to it. (To avoid the too many cooks in the kitchen syndrome!)

See example  http://docs.google.com/document/d/13jRb8TKfeViKzx24xHXQGcf2xrkfWrBLdgZ8YlN9GfQ/edit?usp=sharing" rel="nofollow - HERE !

Drop a vote & your thoughts... just trying to figure out how to make this easier on folks within the constraints of an older platform!

~Chilly

Not sure if my vote counts or not, haha! But I think it would be a fun experiment to use Google Docs for the next round. :)

I don't think so.  I do have a fix for the problem without doing that.

Once you reach a certain number of replies in each section(just pic a random number) you need to make a new listing by just copy and pasting the main body of the list and then un sticky the first one and sticky the new one.  This will take care of the problems by removing all those replies.

I know the copy and pasting  of the whole main part of the lists works fine as I had to do it so many times, haha.

With this method you will not need 6 sections you could easily do 3 or even two with the size of this current contest.

Another way to get around the problem:

Have a master list where people do not leave any replies with a separate post for all their requests for getting listed.

I am not a fan of having the list off site.

Suave, I am curious why you are so against having it listed in a Google doc? I honestly think it's more efficient and removes the possibility of it crashing and losing everything.

Also, the forum has not been the same since it went all wonky last month. The character limits seem to be lower than they were before. So two lists probably wouldn't work anymore!

Hey Steph,

It is not that I am so against listing it off site, but in the questions and answers section someone was asking about sharing others work without asking and I am wondering if someone gives out the google link will people be able to access the stories from the google site?

I think either of my solutions, both will keep everything in the protected zone, will work no problem, I think having a separate section for asking to be listed and another for the actual master list where people can be asked not to post any replies will work the best and is I think what I am going to use come Short Story time again.  We may be able to make the Master list so that people can't add replies rather than just asking them not to.

The links would still bring people back to the forum post, not directly to the person's story! So I think we would be okay on that front! Even with a direct link, you still need to log-in before being able to view anything in the private part of the forum!

And I bet Charlie would be able to give you the power to eliminate comments! Because we both know how people have a hard time following directions...haha!

Suave - This is actually a new problem and has nothing to do with the number of replies on a post. It has to do with a lowered character limit allowed in the body of the original post. (We know this because Steph and I both tried pre-populating Master List templates with titles from the "Titles & Synopsis" thread and had post length limitations, long before there were any replies.)

This is a new issue since they reset the forums after they crashed at the beginning of this challenge. Whatever they did to "fix" the sever, lowered the character limit.

In this proposed work around, you would only be able to access the gdoc from the closed forum and the links in the doc take you back to the closed forum to the story threads (not stories themselves), just like the current system. I tested it and if you are not logged into the forum the links redirect you to a "you don't have access" page and requests you to log in. The security is no different than posting a Master List in the forum.

The replies to the post is what makes it so large and the forum gets finicky, that and having thousands of people wanting to access it at once.  The forum going down is not a new thing.

As soon as I re-posted the master list in a new post the problem went away - well not completely, I had some posts that just would not link to the forum and had to get the poster to re-post their story and send me that link.  The forum goes through stages.  But I am sure that my way will work fine, that is what I am banking on anyway.  With the master list separate from the where the formites list their stories for addition to the master list it will work good - anytime something goes blooie just start a new comments post and continue on - separating the two is the way to go.

Suave - I'm not sure you are hearing what I am saying. The problem existed BEFORE there were any replies. This issue had nothing to do with the number of replies on the post but the total content of the original post.

I just tested it by trying to create a new post with all the 61-125 links in it and get a 503 error. It will not allow you to create a new topic if the content is beyond a certain length. I think you are banking on your personal experience without recognizing this is a new issue.

The key security issue for me is leaking any details of our published name or the story title.

I can see that the round trip is fairly secure:
  1. Post a forum post (which is behind the forum login) w/ your story title and link to your story on your hosted site (ex: Google Docs). This is the same as right now.
  2. Post a link/reply to your forum post in the Master List of stories' forum post, which is behind the forum login, so that the Keepers of the Scroll can update the Google Sheets list. This is similar to right now, except the list of forum links is offsite and not behind the forum. BUT this is similar to the current state right now if you post a link to your forum post in your signature, which appears on every post, public or behind a forum. It still has the same security issue as the forum posts--it's possible to create an account that's not tied to your NYCM account. (I don't think your NYCM account and your forum post are linked or verified right now.)
  3. Post a link to the Google Sheets list with the link to your forum post. This is similar to right now, and it keeps the "true" link behind the forum login security.
The opportunity for mischief is only slightly higher. One thing that might help is if the story links in Google Sheets don't reference the actual story title.

Ok, I just made a copy of my 1-50 master list from the short story and posted it under test in the short story forum section and it is still there for you to take a look at.  I had no problem posting it.  As I said the forum sort of goes here and there.  So work arounds will work.

Actually no different than now since people post in the Title & Synopsis thread in the open part of the forum....

While I can copy and past your list into the FF subforum, I still cannot post the entirety of groups 61-125 in one new post as it exceeds the limit. Meaning at the very least Steph & I would still have to maintain 2 lists each. A gdoc would circumvent that.

I ain't no Nixie but I'm all for Google Docs. As Stephen said, we all put our work out there in our signatures for anyone to click on, but only logged in forumites can actually see the post. That would be exactly the same with Google docs.

If it's easier for the master list keepers, then that's what I'm happy to do. They put a lot of time into this, and if it keeps bugging out I understand that they want change.

I also understand the need to protect our property -- but I don't see the threat here. We have time-stamped proof of writing and submitting these stories. And when a competition's done... you can always remove the story link on your own post.

Has anything happened before where someone's stolen a story/ script from the log-in portion of the site? Maybe I'm just being naive.

I have tried three different ways to combine your lists into new lists and no joy.
This reminds me of the problems I was having with individual posts within the
list, there was just no way to get there from there, the people had to make
me a new forum post so that I could post them to the list.  If you have time
you could try making up a list with no posts in it, just the headings for each heat
, say a fifty heat list with 3 spaces between each heat and post that, then start
adding posts.  The forum, when it decides it does not like something, it does
not change its mind and I have always had to start over.  The above way of making
the list is how I have done it.  All the posts were added to the list after it was posted.

As I proved when I copied and pasted the 1-50 master list (larger than their lists) from the short story contest that I did earlier in the year, the character limits were not lowered, the forum just found something it did not like about the way their posts were formatted and limited their size.  This forum takes a little poking and prodding to get things done sometimes.

Personal experiences/opinions of the functionality of the forums not withstanding, I’m going to add a devil’s advocate thought that I shall present for the sake of discussion.

A delightful human, nerdier than I, has offered a single reservation on using a off-closed-forum gdoc. Should a Master List Wrangler accidentally add the wrong link (as in a direct story post as opposed to a closed forum link) it could compromise the “published” status of a story.

Mistakes can happen. I’ve added people to the wrong group on the ML as well as posted a typo or two. To date, I dont think I have added an incorrect link but I’m only a smol, fuzzy, chubby, flightless aquatic birdy. Mistakes can happen. (Change your vote if this concerns you.)

I did not think of that, and if they do plagiarism searches that could come up I guess.  One other thought on the off site part is that once the contest is finished, the list will not be part of the permanent record of the different contests that they have going back many years, well unless you keep your copy perpetuity in Google docs.

Fair point. While it wouldn’t compromise the archived stories, it could make it harder for people to utilize if they want to go back and, for example, search out & read placing stories.

I’d like to say that I’d leave the gdoc accessible in perpetuity, But precognition is not one of my talents & i have no idea what my future might bring.

Remember, I did all posts to the master list with copy and paste directly from their request to be listed message into the master list on the forum - other than make up the template in Word of the 5o heats, with 3 spaces between each of them, I added nothing outside the forum, and that template was copy pasted into my master list post to start.  I think all the copy paste is what makes mine seem a little messy, well I know it did, lol.  But as I was quite busy and did not have other means at my disposal I did it that way and it worked.

True, but such a mistake would not last long.  Same as how it is now when someone posts their story in the open part of the forum, the first non-newbie to discover the mistaken link would notify the ML Wrangler of the mistake.

I did not think of that, and if they do plagiarism searches that could come up I guess.  One other thought on the off site part is that once the contest is finished, the list will not be part of the permanent record of the different contests that they have going back many years, well unless you keep your copy perpetuity in Google docs.

At some point, perhaps right before the next round starts, the Wranglers could then make permanent forum posts, and copy/paste the google docs data into however many posts as is necessary to be part of the permanent record. At that point the data will be nearly static, right?

though you are right if that what was meant, not unless someone wanted to do that 125 times, lol.  It is just the master list itself that would be missing.

And I just noticed that the poll item is for 2 MLs.  I'd say that once you're taking this step, there's no reason not to just have a single list.  One wrangler could create the doc, and give edit access to whoever else has also stepped up as a wrangler.  How the wranglers then break up the workload amongst themselves is up to them.

I know that I'm basically a newbie but as someone who did a lot of reading and reviewing this past round, I'm not ambivalent abut this, I' firmly in the "we should do this" camp.

Maybe it's just me, but I would not share my work if we're linking it externally

You would not be linking it externally. The links would go to the closed forum posts, just like the ML does now. There would be no way for someone not signed up for the forum to access your work.

I too don't like the thought of the external link, but they are right about the needing to be signed into the forum in order to go to a story.

If they try this I will watch and see how things go, but pretty sure I will do the Short Story Contest the same way I have done it in years previous - all in the protected area of the forum.  I just have not found it that difficult.  they seem to have had a pretty hard time of it this time around.

What if the google doc listed everyone's story by screen name rather than by title? I.e.:

Group 43: a dominatrix, a leather whip, a seedy tattoo parlor
Chillytoez' story [with a link built in]
Suave's story
Steph's story

Here's the benefit: we can still find our friends' and fellow groupmates' stories, but "hackers" won't know who any of those names even refer to, so they'd be less likely to get far. For example, they'd be unable to do a google search for a particular story name, like "Why I love the peace sign on my a**," or whatever. As an added precaution, we could enourage password protection usage among our google docs, with the password being in the protected forum. Smile

It happens to all of us at sometime.
Just so that you know, I don't think that anything has been done wrong, only that the forum did not like whatever it was, it can be like that.  For what it is worth I have only been giving a view and possible remedies, not criticizing anyone or what has been done.  Obviously both of you have done everything you could to make it happen and it has, but you asked a question when you started this post.

Correct, I did & I'm not trying to shut that down at all! My intention with the OP was to start a dialogue so that collectively we might come up with a way to improve the UX in a way that everyone could be comfortable within a forum that is quirky at best.  (or as many people as possible, since it's pretty much impossible to please everyone all the time)

The edited post above was a knee jerk reaction to something I read, then decided perhaps it wasn't intended as I perceived it. I did not want to be adversarial, so I deleted the comment. That's all. Big smile

My story itself is always in Google Docs already, so I'm not particularly worried about security. But maybe an opt in/opt out process for the master list is necessary for people who are. Like if you don't leave a comment on the Master list post, your story won't be added?

Of course, it's possible that opting out may decrease the number of people who read your story - I know I always use the master list to find my group mates because I find it fascinating how the same prompt always leads to such different stories.

I think we decided to struggle through using the old method for now... I have had a small handful of people contact me to say that if the ML was in a Gdoc they would not post their story at all. I don't want anyone to miss out on the best (IMO) part of this comp because of this...

Hopefully some of the technical issues the forums had last round will be ironed out next week. *flippers crossed*
