4 weeks from today is the 3 Day Novel Contest- my long time addiction. Wondering if anyone else on here will be joining me this year. Last year they were veeeeeery slow with results. They still haven't announced the winner. But with that disclaimer, it is a great time for a writer and there's a wonderful 3 day community.

If you haven't heard of this, it's Labor/labour day weekend. Honor system. Your write and edit a novel in just three days (generally novella length 35k words is typical). Each year 1 winner gets published.

I’m tempted!  I’ve never written a novel but this sounds oddly, horrifyingly, fun.

Shocked

Madness! And yet, like Charlie72 says, sounds oddly fun. Nothing like a deadline.

Will look out for it next year and keep my calendar free.

Have you ever produced anything you really liked during the competition Catrad?

I've done it about 10 times and ended up with a couple of viable books. It's always a great experience. Once you know you can write a book in 3 days, anything seems possible.

Sounds like a lot of fun but I have to build up to it for sure. These 1000 weekend competitions are stressful enough for me right now haha. I'm saving the link though, because I'm sure there'll be a time when I feel up to it. :-) Thanks for sharing.

I looked them up on FB, and they have a really bad reputation for months'-long radio silence. Last year, they claimed they'd announce the short list in October. They never got around to it until this past June. And people have complained that they never answer emails, which I too can attest to, because I sent them an email asking a few questions (like, what if you're in a different time zone?), and they've never answered. (It's been a few weeks.) I'm thinking I'm not going to do this competition. Smile (I'm still adding an emoji because my posts glitch otherwise... smiles all around!)

Can't disagree with anything Zelda said, but will add that it is incredibly fun and I have been doing it for ten years+. Despite the frustrations the last couple years, I'll be back at it Labor Day weekend. The adrenalin rush and sense of accomplishment when you finish a novel in three days is probably akin to what a marathon runner feels crossing the finish line.

Has it ever caused you writer's burnout? That's another concern I have.

Actually, the opposite. It's like a writing recharge (at least for me). The ideas start flowing, and I get jazzed up about writing. There are moments of despair along the way, but working under a deadline, forces you to push through and keep going. Also chocolate helps. And coffee.

When I emerge after, I can tell by people's expressions, that I am totally insane and people are not sure whether to back quietly away, or run screaming.... But that after-writing euphoria makes it worth potential commitment.

I’m still waiting for a response from them.  I’m still not sure if I’ll do it even if I do get the response, but I’m now in the position you were in before.

Shocked Wow, they need to hire a PR firm or something. It's impossible not to draw bad conclusions when this sort of thing keeps happening to everyone. I can't even understand the issue, since internet communication is so easy in this day and age.

Keep us posted on both things--if you hear back, and if you're going to compete!!

Hey, Charlie72, come on, sign up. I signed up on the last day of the lower fee and if an old lady like me can do it, you young whippersnappers can do it. Hope I don’t have a stroke doing this but hey, a gal has to go sometime!

I wrote them a question several weeks back and they never answered but guess what?  I’m not worried. This comp has been around since the ‘70s. Besides, I doubt I win. But I have had 2 novels half done forever, so by starting this one and doing it in 3 days I will at least have something FINISHED. Well, not finished, because no matter what it will need work. But at least something that has an ending written. And there are loads of opportunities for novellas right now. So it is worth it to me as a motivational thing. And who knows?  Maybe I will win!

Good luck to all of you!  Soot. PS. Besides Charlie, as good as you write, YOU might win!  Sign up!

I don't think I could participate in a 3-day contest with no prompts to keep people honest.  The rules even suggest outlining to make things smoother and that kind of defeats the purpose of having a 3-day contest.  Like ... I could start now, wait a year or two, and have a 20-page "outline" for my 3-day contest.  Yah, I still have to write the sentences, but humans have impeccable capacity for memory and it's likely possible I've written the full novella or imagined its scenes a thousand times by then.

Sorry ... flash fiction is a lot more fun because no one can start until the timer starts.

I don't care what outline you have, you can't pigeon hole it into the absolutely bizarre combinations a RNG produced prompt can provide.

Oh, you're not wrong but I think the point of the 3day, even more so than the NYCM contest, is not about winning per se, and it's not best thought of as a competition versus other people, but rather as a competition against yourself.  It's like running a marathon.  Unless you're a professional marathon-runner, you're not going to win, and yet literally thousands of people do it anyway, for the experience.  Or so I'm told, as for me a marathon is dashing to the fridge for a snack during a commercial break.

Posted By: sootfoot5
Date Posted: 23 Aug 2019 at 2:38pm
Sigh.  My fridge is so empty.  No point in running at all.....

Seriously, I have to agree with Charlie on this -- and yet I have a rather long outline (but that is because of the kind of story I'm going to try to write - more on that later)   Sure, a person could cheat.  But if you read all the fine print of the contest, if your entry is too good, it won't be chosen.  This contest isn't really about who wrote the best all around piece, but who came up with the best story and presented it in a good manner considering they wrote it in 3 days.  If it doesn't look like it was written in 3 days, they're out.  That takes subjective judging, but all judging is rather subjective, so whatever.

Really, this contest is more about writing a good story as fast as you can without passing out or giving up.  Or going to the fridge too many times.  The only way I will make it is to use like a size 16 font while I'm writing and then change it down to a 12 to turn it in.

I love to write Flash, I love to write Short Story, so lets see if I can write a novel or novella - BRING IT!

oh yeah, I forgot - my outline is so long because my story involves history.  Historical Fiction.  I have some stuff I must keep straight and in order.  But that doesn't mean I'm writing my story.  But I'd be a fool not to take advantage of doing a good outline when I am trying to do my first historical fiction piece.  Which has two other genres thrown in for good measure.  (did I mention I have an insane streak?)
