Good luck to all those moving on!

Can't say this one didn't sting. And on a MONDAY, of all days. Ugh.

Looking forward to Flash!

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. I have, without fail, managed a HM in every SS and FF semi-final, but never moved on to the Finals. Some day. Ah well. I already know where I want to sub this piece.

Best of luck this weekend, everyone!

Got an HM, which is about what I expected (I never get into finals for fiction!) But I scored higher than last year, where I got an HM in Round 1, so I'm happy. I also did not particularly want to write this weekend so I'm not sore about it.

Congrats to all who moved on, especially Nicole622 - I knew you'd get 1st place as soon as I read it!

I made it! I don't have high hopes going into this last one because I'm sure I'm up against the best of the best now, but it feels great to make it through on my first competition!

Nothing here, but congrats to those who made it- especially those in my round that posted! I think two of them are moving on!

I'm considering the Flash- anyone else? How does it compare to the Short Story comp?

Argh.  Back to back semi-finals, and not even an Honorable Mention.  Be interested to see if one judge screwed me, or if all three were just lukewarm on my story. Bring on Flash Fiction!!

I like it better than Short Story. 48 hours and 1000 words is easier for me - 2500 seems enormous in comparison!

Not even an honorable mention and unless I missed someone,no one who posted from my heat even got an HM. Eh. I knew I took a chance because the genre description makes it pretty clear the kind of romcom they want (Hallmark shlock, Nora Ephron cutesy stuff) and I don't slum that hard. Continuing the tradition that the more objectivly good a story I do the worse it scores here!

At least my favorite thing I think I read the whole time WON its heat! "Magpies of Sugrut"!

I suspect I was penalized on my genre interpretation as well (more drama than romance), but your story was truly one of my favorites from this round.

Didn't make it and totally understand why.  One of the stories in my group that I really enjoyed got 2nd in the group though, so I'm glad for that.

And at least I got to participate in the second round.

Just an honorable mention here. Kinda sucks that I can't move on. I've been fighting a lot of confidence issues with my writing and it would have been nice to ride the high a bit longer. I'll be interested to read the feedback, though.

Congrats to all those moving on! Fight hard, Wordslingers!

Best of luck to all of you who are moving on!

I made it! I ended up getting second in my group, just like first round. I’ve been so busy since the submission day with school / family troubles / basically a life overhaul that I couldn’t dedicate any thought to this. I came back to find a lot of reviews I need to return (which I feel absolutely terrible about) and the results email. I didn’t even know it was supposed to be sent today?
I had no expectation to make it to the next round, and I am both thrilled and full of fear. This is my first short story competition, and I’m really not sure what to expect for the next round. Either way, I am grateful I get to take part in it.
There are a lot of stories that didn’t make it on the list that honestly flabbergasted me. I haven’t read a single story that I didn’t think was fantastic, and I hope that everyone is proud of the work they created and knows that they are so so so talented, regardless of the result they received. Truly, the talent in this competion is so high, and it’s all the better that the talent belongs to such an awesome, encouraging community. I’ve loved taking part in FFC2018 and SSC2019, and I can’t wait to continue working and seeing what greatness people create in finals and in FFC2019!

Completely gobsmacked at getting 1st in my heat - and completely panicking now as I realise this means I have to write in/through/around airports on Friday/Saturday in an area not renowned for its wifi... Confused

I find there's a direct correlation: the better the story I write, the worse it scores here. The one I got eliminated on in flash fic last year already sold, the one that got third in R1 this time is already racking up rejections, the one that I got eliminated on in last year's SSC is coming out in a book in June (with a bonus that the edits are all 'doubling down on stuff people didn't like and getting rid of what they did.')

So I made it through in second. (Hooray!) Feel like a bit of an ass now, as I gave up a couple of times and made a big fuss about how cruel my prompts were (when in fact that's just the nature of the comp). However, I can honestly say I would not have submitted anything if not for this forum and you good folk. This, for me, is the greatest value of the NYCM forums - not for the specific writing critiques, which can be valuable, but for the general air of encouragement and camaraderie. (Thanks especially to @Random for a well-timed pep talk - bit of tough love that helped me get up off the mat and finish the damn thing with moments to spare.)

On another note, and to reiterate the thoughts of various others above, what is up with some of these judges? As churlish as it might be to criticize the judging when you've just been promoted, some (not all) of the comments I got evinced a real lack of insight and aptitude. Like, tips on how to "improve" sentences that would have left them clunky and unattractive. And questions about plot that were answered in the story. Kind of saps the joy of advancing when you read your feedback and find it so far off the mark. (Notable exception: judge 1951. Thank you. At least someone got it.)

Hey SLK. Congrats to you too. There are at least a couple of other Aussies in the mix, from what I can discern. Here's one:

I noticed that too and assumed it was a nice perk of being in Round 2 - but now having read others' feedback, it looks like some heats had 3 judges and some had 4, which is very strange. Don't think I've seen that happen before - in screenplay it's always been 3 judges for every heat except the final, when you get 6.

Thanks Manifestlynot! Honestly still in shock. I read the list from bottom up and when I saw you as an HM I thought I didn’t have a chance—I really loved your piece and thought it would be top 3 for sure! I hope you keep doing these comps, I can’t wait to see what else you come up with!

This surprised me as well and I've never seen it before. (Or at least never noticed it.) I did go back through all my old saved feedback and it was always 3 judges. I wondered if in certain heats the scoring was too close so they added a fourth judge for further insight? Just a theory.

I’m well out of this contest but I’m following with keen interest - with more “losers” (we’re not really!) than “winners” on SSC now,  I thought I’d share this apt phrase coined by a friend of mine -

 “a catastrophic trifecta of uselessness”

Now there’s a great mouthful of a curse to hurl at your unsatisfactory judges :-D

First in my heat!!! That was... completely unexpected. I honestly would have been over the moon with a simple HM.

There were also some amazing stories I read on these forums which didn't get through to Round 3 (both in my heat and others), which really surprised me. Oh well, I guess you just can't tell how the judges will decide.

It's the federal election here in Australia this Saturday too. I'll have to vote in the morning, and start planning/writing in the afternoon. I was also planning on going to my friend's party on Saturday night, to knock back some wines, watch the polling results on the ABC, and laugh at all the politicians. Might have to re-think those plans now!

Huge ClapCONGRATULATIONSClap to the Round Two winners!

I didn't make it through, and frankly, I didn't expect to, but one always grasps that withered seed of hope, right?

I have to say that I was flummoxed when I received my judges' feedback, especially after my First Round feedback (which earned me a 1st spot). It was GLOWING. Even the 'negatives' were pretty positive, as if the judges struggled to find something they had to pick at. Intriguingly, the feedback for my first-round story was precisely the OPPOSITE; so-called 'positives' all held negative edges; most of the judges clearly didn't even "get" the story--most confused the gender of the MC, one thought she was a psycho killer (?!?!?), and one totally missed the most important connection in the climax of the story (and judge-splained to me how I could make it better)... yet, the story earned a 1st Place spot in the First Round. SMDH!!!

It leaves me wondering if the majority of the judges just want "deep", convoluted pieces--even where they themselves cannot fully comprehend the meaning (layered or obvious)? And for the record, Forum members seemed to have few issues understanding the substance/content of the story. Very weird.
My second story was a crime caper with raccoons. One judge called it "cartoonish". Ummmmm, yeah! CAPER! LOL

No sour grapes about not moving forward... I knew my story wasn't strong enough, especially the closing. And once I read others in my Heat (and many other Heats!), I was blown away. I am always honored to watch Talent receive its due. And I have most certainly enjoyed feasting on all these amazing stories! Thank-you ALL for that!!
See you in FFC2019! Wink

Alex,
I couldn't LOVE that more!!!! Judging was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO confusing and frustrating for me! I mean, I didn't really expect to move forward, but the feedback for both rounds was totally unexpected. I won a 1st Place in round 1 with mostly 'negative' feedback and judges who didn't even understand my story, and didn't get anywhere in round 2 with GLOWING feedback. My head is spinning.

I had the same experience! I didn't even get an HM, so I was expecting my judge's feedback to be brutal, but it was so positive that I want to work on the story and submit somewhere.  The items needing work were pretty positive and solid things to tackle, similar to the feedback I received on the forum. Too funny. It was fine, I was glad I advanced to R2 at least, but the feedback was MUCH better than I expected.

I sold mine to "Write Ahead The Future Looms"

It was a cyberpunk story so I targeted them as my first choice (as that's their niche.) They're a semi-pro mag, so I ended up making back a little more than what I paid for the contest. So that's a win in my book. If I manage to sell my R1 story, that will be gravy....
