Beat me, whip me, make me write lies (or fiction).

Leopold von Sacher-Masoch would approve of how quickly I sign up for more punishment.

Just got two emails. A rejection for a story submission and a heads up that FFC registration was open.

Once again, sometimes life is too cute.

I’m definitely in, but may wait until payday to officially join! Really looking forward to it, though the “Furious Fiction” competition will keep me entertained until then - can’t remember who on the forum suggested it but thank you :-)

I'm a child of the 80s, so there's only one thing that goes through my head when I see the word 'Flash' on its own.

Ahh ahh Savior of the universe

But yes, I'm so in. I just had my first dabble with forced flash fiction doing the aforementioned Furious Fiction. Turns out its a comfortable writing length for me.

I have the originals on disk.  My dad used to sneak into theaters to watch them.  At Luce Auditorium in San Diego (the building to the right when Maverick races off the base and Charlie follows him in Top Gun) they played Dick Tracy serials...we'd watch the black and white show from the 30s and leave when the really bad movie started, but they got their $0.75 and everyone was happy.

So in!
Was pretty worried, as I've got a high school reunion in July and some work travel in August, September, and October. Turns out, none of them overlap with competition weekends so lucked out there!
At least we're guaranteed two rounds - I'm thinking SSC just isn't for me, as I always get booted after round one.

I wish it didn't take them ages to judge each round! I'm discouraged by how point A to point B is two months, point B to point C is two months, and then... well, historically I get eliminated. LOL

But you got some great feedback from readers and judges for your round 1 story - please don't give up! At least there is peer feedback here and the work doesn't just disappear into a black hole of imagined disapproval (says she after failing to get anywhere, not even a mention, on several entries submitted to a Writer's Forum flash comp).

And this time I have put the dates in my diary the second I hit the Booking confirmation.

Just 'cos it might be nice to actually have the allocated time available and not booked up with work, family commitments, church commitments, driving etc etc!

Although...what will I use as an excuse for my terrible writing? Hmm, may need to think about this...

According to my calendar we have Furious Fiction next weekend and Flash the weekend after that.  I am SO ready to rumble right now.

Match on the 13th, but that just gives me something else to do while the plot thickens.

Hiya! Back for my 2nd NYC midnight competition! I participated in flash fic 2018.  I was hoping to do the SSC this year but I was busy having a baby!  Excited for the weekend 😊

Back home today after a business trip to the Midwest, which I left for a reason.  If I needed the reminder it hit me the moment I walked off the airplane.  At least I got to visit Habu 964 and read a book.  The latter is pretty normal for a business trip.

A real book, with ink on paper pages.  People look at me funny when I read those on airplanes, but I still like the feel of a book in hand as opposed to the alternative.

All set to fall on my face in Round 1, which is also normal.  Some day I'll look up the definition of "tense", because it seems to elude me.

I’m in for a second year. It was a gas last time. I found out exactly what I did wrong in the first story, and of course didn’t fix it in the 2nd story.
Although I never win any contests, it’s still a gas. You know your writing is bad when the story you wrote based on very specific criteria for a work newsletter (which I did perfectly) is denied! But who cares? I love writing, no matter how good or bad it is.
I’m ready this time.
But no sci fi! Please no sci fi! I think I could write most others. But no sci fi!

The second contest is way easier, your brain is already morphing into a prompt machine.  Have fun!

Hello hello! Just wanted to offer greetings and disclose that this is my first writing contest and I'm absolutely petrified (yet excited) haha. Everyone I know is appalled by the fact that my birthday weekend will be spent in feverish writing and self-doubt, as opposed to theoretical overindulgence and celebration. Considering the latter never, ever seems to happen on my birthday? Yeah, I'm good with this.

This is going to be my first contest. I'm so excited to dive in and start writing.

Cons:
I am not at all familiar with a couple of the genres so I'm giving myself a crash course today and tomorrow.
I have a full work shift on Saturday so I feel like I will be behind right from the beginning.

Pros:
I work well under pressure and it's usually when I produce my best work.
I love writing and I can't wait to see the prompt info.

Wishing you the best of luck fellow writers!

Woohoo, so excited, and nervous, for this competition. I'm so interested, and spend so much time, studying and working on writing screenplays that this feels really out of my element. I'm pretty much up for any genre but I hope I don't get any bizarre objects haha. Getting largesse for ghost story in round one of screenwriting competition really threw me for a loop LOL.

I have to say.....I am genuinely open to anything as, it’s only once the prompts drop that you can truly start applying yourself to the process of story writing.  My first ever genre was thriller in Jan 2018 for the short story challenge and looking back, it was a tough one, but honestly, there are no easy ones. Also, I feared Political Satire so much that when I drew it last year for the first time in R2 for Flash.....I went into complete meltdown.....but scored higher than the Romance I wrote and absolutely loved for R1......Having had PolSat once, I no longer feared it and so when I drew it for 2019 R1 Short Story, I put my heart and soul into a story that I rate amongst my best ever....and yet I bombed out with an HM.......so, come 5am here in the UK, I am up for anything, as this wonderful world of NYCM pushes me to tackle things and genres I never thought I was capable of.....and I’m getting used to learning to cope and rise to that challenge of the OMG moment when you get the prompts and think ‘what am I going to do?’ and then dive in. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE. MAY THE PROMPTS BE FOREVER IN YOUR FAVOUR ❤️

Across these comps, I’ve had every genre save for two. I’ve resigned myself to just making the best of the hand i’m dealt. Sometimes our best work can come from the worst prompts.

That said, I have my list of “please God, no” genres. Which will remain nameless.

Ah, France, where they sell pain by the loaf.  Very similar in that respect to NYCM, where they sell pain by the contest.

I'm in again and feeling nervous about the prompts! It's our 30th anniversary on Monday, and we're off on a little getaway for a couple days of touring wineries starting Sunday morning, so I have to pretty much write this thing on Saturday! Resubmitting Sunday night using hotel WiFi, perhaps a little drunk.

Here's definitely hoping that the prompts are in my favour! I usually take ALL the time given.
