This is my first time trying this. I suspect I've been a bit optimistic, having never written a screenplay, and having written just 3 stage plays in the not significant number of years I've been on this planet.

Just as well I won't get through to the third round, there's no way I could do something in 24 hours...

Please tell me I am not alone.

I have one page, but it is a good first page if I might say so myself.

My prompts: Drama - ultra-competitive - a senile person, were at first glance horrible, but then I softened and started to like it a little - big mistake.
When I really started to brainstorm I realized just how bad that ultra-competitive part was, very hard to shoehorn into any kinda drama for me - but I got it, I hope.

forget about format, and structure, and dialogue or anything else.

look at your prompt. Of any of the three things, what excites you about them? what does it make you think?

when you have that, use it as your story's anchor. You might change it later even, but it should be enough to start you in a good direction; forwards

My prompts fit together too well, I think that's half my problem. I'm too concerned with falling into cliche.

I'll hopefully get something down!

What the heck is horror?  It's not that I don't have a fear reflex, I've just spent decades keeping my response to it under control.  Part of the job requirement, in every job I've ever had, it seems.

Struggling to come up with something horrible that's not found in virtually every horror piece ever done.  Ideas?  Yeah.  Like them?  Not so much.  I'll start reading previous NYCM horror tonight, just to get some idea what works.

Story?  Sure, I can write a story with the other two prompts, but I do need to at least touch on the genre at some point.

Worried about it?  Not even a little.  I'll use the ideas I have, and send teenage girls screaming from the room (my horror research over the last couple days have revealed some interesting gender differences in this regard).  On the other hand, it's possible teenage boys are too dumb to get out of danger.

Yeah, I understand that part. A prompt that has an obvious response is too predictable and tempting--it's too easy to fall into the trap of writing the expected.

Hating life. Blargh.

Why is histfic even an option here?

Time to go do some more research. On Netflix.

Best of luck, everyone!

I saw a post not so long ago that they were going to get rid of HistFic in Screenplay, but you like corsets and hoop skirts so much they left it in just for you.

I am up to FADE OUT.

There's also a FADE IN.  The white space in between identifies as a screenplay this week.

There is that movie, "A Quiet Place", where there is no dialog all the way through.  Yours is simply pushing that envelope.

All I can say is when a prompt doesn't work then I can't fake it. I think every single time the 2nd round kills me because I get a prompt that I just hate.

This time, again, the first round prompt really works for me. Ghost/Maternal/A Mortician. I woke up yesterday morning with the "what if?" in my head, ready to go.

WHY CAN'T IT ALWAYS BE LIKE THIS?

I wonder if there would be some merit in having brainstorming sessions. Would probably be better with people from different groups, so that people are less likely to hit on the same idea. It might just help get the seed of an idea.

I have, thankfully, managed to come up with a cohesive idea. It's hard for me to say if it's clichéd, or done to death or predictable (partly because I haven't watched or read many short screenplays) , but the 'com' aspect of the romcom is inspired by my life, so that bit is original at least.

Did the Writer's Weekly 24 Hour Story Contest over the weekend, but now turning my attention to my [first ever] screenplay Shocked. I got really lucky this time. Got a genre really close to my actual comfort zone for the first time in NYCM so far. Got prompts that immediately spoke to me. Had a complete story idea, plot and all, within an hour of receiving my prompts.

Thriller/hunt/food delivery driver.

Now to read through the NYCM guidelines for writing a screenplay, and get to writing.

What really helps is screenplay software. It sorts out the margins etc for you.

I tried fade in, which was great but wanted $80 to avoid putting a watermark on every page, so I moved my script to rawscripts which is free, but maybe not as intuitive to use.

Good luck!

Yikes! Fade In was $40 when I bought it. There are a few "free" packages that let you write complete scripts w/o payment, but limit some features. WritersDuet, IIRC, has an online version that's free. So is Amazon Storywriter.

Don't get me wrong, fade in is great software that's well worth it - if you'll use it.

But for now, it's not worth it for me. But if I keep doing these challenges it  might be.

Rawscripts works fine. I've also heard of scripped and celtx that are supposedly free or have free versions. My problem with Amazon storywriter was that I couldn't figure out how to do a title page without 'by' in the middle of it. But that might just be me!

I woke up glad I remembered to write down those last few thoughts that drifted through my head before I passed out (at 4:00 PM; I'm old; when I was in the Navy we used oars to move the boat).

There are enough notes to write a twelve minute screenplay.  One of the female characters is good with a needle, and a date on which an event took place in a previous year is involved.  Horror, or some other conjugation thereof, applies, as do any number of other, perhaps more pejorative descriptions.  For good measure I threw in other genres; rom-horror, com-horror, suspense-horror, thriller-horror...

Give or take the need to work during working hours (there's a horrible feeling of dread the answer will turn out to be 'yes') I'll get something on the page today.  Besides FADE IN and FADE OUT.

I sometimes come up with an idea and sketch it out, then take it from a different character's POV.  Mix it up.  Or enter the story in the middle or sideways.  It's hard to make an impact in a short script, so you have to try and engage but also do something different and sometimes your idea just needs a fresh angle.  Another thing is pitching it to your friends enthusiastically. Sometimes I come up with ideas as I'm pitching!

good luck everyone!

That's a genius idea! Really pushing the envelope - Going far beyond no dialogue, to now include no characters too. Maybe just have a bunch of atmospheric scenes and a VO explaining that something might've occurred at some point and there was a conflict but thankfully it resolved itself. Haha, Love it

I almost posted this exact same topic. I was struggling something awful until last night around 9:00 PM when I finally got some semblance of an idea. My prompts are ghost story - largesse - a nanny.

I've got about 3 full pages just for my opening scene which seems way too long and probably not a lot of action so I'm going to need to do major edits when I'm done. My problem now is how to get from the beginning to the end - What points to hit, etc. Plus needing to develop the characters more. Not sure if they are all that exciting. It's definitely a struggle and I'm glad to hear I'm not alone. I hope something comes to you. Good luck!

I’ve got an idea and know where it’s going, but had no time to write at the weekend. And probably won’t until Friday. Luckily that’s a public holiday, so I’m hoping 48 hours of *focused* writing will be enough to turn this around...

Time is good.  Been distracted by a few things today (Notre Dame among them), so got my notes organized a little bit and started working on descriptions.  I think now is a good time to just give up on progress and tackle a different project.

A long, long time ago, before civilization, before Leslie King was appointed President of the United States, before the Internet, Walt Disney released a 33 1/3 album (on vinyl) called "The Thrilling, Chilling Sounds of the Haunted House".  Sitting at home alone, writing old-school horror, and I remembered this album, thinking it would be appropriate.

Fortunately we live in the age of YouBoob, and of course it's available...maybe not the perfect soundtrack for writing, but darn close...

This script is nothing but action, and right now I have '[name]' and 'she'.  A hundred thousand times.  Going to have to figure out a way to get out of it.  She does this.  She does that.  She does something else.  She wishes someone else were around to do something.  She thinks this is pointless.  She wants me to stop now.

I'm not usually one to cry woe is me about prompts, but I seriously have the WORST prompts this time. Suspense, mining and a puppeteer??????? I have an idea that I now have to stick with, but I'm so uninspired and have so far written three pages of utter nonsense. Researching mining has made me realise that I am intensely bored (hah) by the subject and I don't know if I'll be able to finish this one, which is bumming me out. Anyone else having difficulties at this late stage still?

It's pretty horrible, but that's the prompt.

Even if I were inclined to think this is [horror/comedy/action/romance/suspense/thriller/erotica/drama] after you read it a few thousand times it's nothing but boring

Maybe it's horror.  I'm sure the judges won't be shy about expressing their opinion.

I am so glad that I resisted the urge to enter the screenplay competition at the last minute!

But I'll throw some things out there - just in case they help:

Gold mines in Wales - mainly mined out by the Romans but some still in production - Dolau Cothi - scam suspense - working gullible investors like puppets - I mean, who knows that there's a barely a teaspoon of gold (it might be a bit more!) in Welsh mines now??

Deep deep slate mines in North Wales - https://www.zipworld.co.uk/adventure/caverns" rel="nofollow - https://www.zipworld.co.uk/adventure/caverns - home of one of the most complicated zipwire courses in the world - underground - maybe a villain playing a victim like a puppet on the wires over some severely deep and dark drops??

Good Luck - necessity (or desperation) is the mother of invention - don't give up!

Been there in every one of these contests. Usually the second round. The prompt is like...wha? Either it's too predictable or just too incomprehensible.

I am tired of writing ghost stories. I don't like them, I don't read them, and I don't want to write them anymore. I never win with them. I just don't "do" the genre.

So I feel ya here.

If it’s helpful, one of my duties is data mining...? (No idea if that’s any better but it make take you in a new direction)

Both great ideas, but would require even more research, which I really don't have in me. I've done just about the amount of reading about mining that I can stomach. That underground zip-line looks legit terrifying though, would make a great thriller!

I did actually toy with that idea, but then felt that it wouldn't make a very compelling visual story (or rather that I couldn't make it a compelling one). It would definitely work as a short story though I reckon. That's great info though, I will definitely be hitting you up should I ever be writing about data mining as I know nothing about it!

Not alone at all! My first time, too. I have written several stage plays and thought this would be easier (the fade in fade out makes transitions so much easier that set and costume changes for live theater). Wrong! I have a 10 page story, I think, but with formatting I can't get it below 18! I'm going to use it as an exercise for writing a full length screenplay. Brevity (as in this email) not my strongpoint! My genre was tough for me, too. Out of my comfort zone for sure.

Write your prompts on individual sheets of paper and then write every freaking word/phrase you can think of that has anything to do with each word. Then look at them at the same time and some stuff should come together. I write a 2 or 3 sentence idea down. Draft out an outline in a paragraph or so and then begin thinking about how many scenes it would take. Then you breakdown the scenes by number with 1 sentence descriptions and then create and flesh out characters. At that point you should start drafting a script. Don't write a word of dialogue until you know where your story begins and ends. This can all change I normally write 10+ drafts before I even like the script.

Eek. I just realized it's due Saturday night (USA) and not Sunday night.

Good thing I have off tomorrow! Life issues nearly ruined me this week and I haven't picked up my script since last weekend...but it will get done.

This round's Screenplay. Current Short Story Comp ("Cold Truths"). Last year's Short Story comp that I set in old-timey Seattle. (Don't remember flash prompts from last year.) At least one flash fiction every round since 2015, which means somewhere around 50-75%.

I'm actually fairly happy with my current one, although it isn't really a screenplay with lots of action. More of a "My Dinner with Andre" feel.

The judges may ding me severely for that, but it's the story that I wanted to tell. The idea literally did come to me Saturday morning when I woke up, and I kicked out the first draft by noon. I've been tweaking it since then, getting some *excellent* feedback, and now it's a tight 11.75 pages. I'll probably give it one more thorough pass on Saturday morning, and then it's done.

My 2nd round short story I had zero interest in, and would have just not submitted anything but a *very good friend* told me to get out of my slump, and I wrote something in 90 minutes ("Ice Capades"). Not my best work, but I got it out there.

I'm in your round. Theoretically now as I've tapped out. This week has seen a funeral, work, school holidays, care of an eldery mother and Melbourne Comedy Festival. If I had been able to get to my idea then I was going down the data mining route but I'm not sure you want my puppeteer idea. It's dark. Like pedo dark.

Best of luck to everyone who didn't have my life this week!

You can eliminate the Fade in/fade out, there are four lines right there.  I am keeping them in as mine is a little short and I don't want the judges using my brevity to hit me over the head any more than necessary.

I'm trying to decide if it's the format, genre, or story that has me completely uninspired.  I tend to be uninspired during screenplay comps in general, but this one is almost as exciting as the SOC audit at work.  I suppose it could be the time of year...leave for a (desperately needed) vacation in two and a half weeks.

It's probably the format, because I have to force myself to keep thoughts out of the action blocks, and the POV and tense change from one end of a sentence to the other.  For some reason the voice won't settle in my head.

All this probably means I need to do more screenplay contests.  Being multi-lingual (or multi-format) isn't a bad thing even if it is hard.

Bah!  Approve

This reminds me of 'Seven Samurai', where entire scenes consist of people sitting in a room grunting softly and doing nothing.  Page after page after page...or maybe it's one page that lasts ten minutes.

Maybe your characters just need to meditate for a while...

This is the first time that I did not just pop out the first idea and run with it.  I took the second and have been wondering if it was the smart thing to do for most of the week, but I am liking it more now and glad I went this way.  I may not advance, but if I like what I have produced it makes me happy and that is more important to me.  Well, 50/50, would really like to advance.  But, damit, still like being happy with my work.

I think it's like 51/49 in favor of advancing for me. Most days. Tongue

But I have to admit I've only been unhappy with one script that advanced here, and that was mostly because I saw how I could have done much better after the fact...with some help from people here.

I'm using my first 'idea', but it has evolved quite a bit.  It's cool reading ideas that came immediately in my notes, how many don't get used, and how many got adapted in a different form.

It's been a really good day at work and I have 12 pages I don't hate.  Good, bad, horror, who knows.  They're done.  Horror isn't my thing, so ignorance is bliss.

At least there is an entry to submit, warts and all.  If I don't advance I'll find something else to do while the rest of you contend with the outrageous slings and arrows of round 2.

Wrote 12 pages, sent to beta and learned it's ridiculously horrible...Between computer crashing and a horrible cold (and life) I have today to rewrite it. Think I can but is it worth it? I did tap out a new outline but not sure I've got the energy to make it very good (though TBH it doesn't always need to be very good to make the cut)...

Turn something in if even remotely possible.  You won't always contend with health issues and life and everything else conspiring to make it difficult, but you will know you can finish even when it's hard.

Knowing you can is far more important than the entry itself.

Don't feel bad. I've got my draft done, and I think my story idea is okay, but found to my horror that writing a screenplay requires me to combine third person with present tense, and that I have no idea how to manage my formatting even with one of the free apps, and that I'm not sure I haven't included some kind of internal dialogue or deep POV which is great in fiction and an absolute no-no in screenplay writing.

If I can turn mine in, so can you!!!! No one can say we didn't try. Right? Right! Big smile

In that link NYCM gives you where it says "Never written a screenplay before? Click here to see some basics..." I read this:

Action Lines
This is where you create the images of the film in the reader's head.  As stated above, action lines should only describe what an audience can see or hear.  They should be short and concise, easy to visualize, and should move the characters, and plot forward.  Action lines should always be written in the present tense.

***

Since I'm doing action for characters like JANE and DICK, I'm writing third person.

Example:

Jane enters the bar. Dick turns around and promptly falls off his stool, breaking his crown.
--Third person, present tense.

Please don't take this as gospel. I'm am an absolute NEWBIE at screenplay. I'm just quoting the info provided. Someone, please please please correct me if I'm wrong.

It's astonishing what you pay attention to on the last day that you ignored on the first; heat, email address I used to sign up, name I used to sign up, whether or not they still allow multiple submissions, whether or not I emptied the last of yesterday's tea from my mug before I made hot chocolate this morning...

I submitted what I have.  Don't know if it's a screenplay, or horror, or worth reading, but there are words on twelve pages.  I sent it to a Master of Horror last night and haven't heard back; that's probably a bad sign.  I'm expecting instructions for uninstalling all of my word processors at some point.

You have a way with words, I would not be too worried.
I too made my first submission - not terribly pleased yet, but way better than three days ago.
I blame the prompts, they just did not sing to me.  Did the best I could with what I came up with, but I have serious doubts.
I felt like I was writing to put people to sleep - Drama.

Well...it's done.

Had way more fun on this one than short story, and thanks to great betas it's much better than it was (including a better final shot).

Now to go find sunshine! Still time to go find the climate protestors in London and pitch up with my tent and a sense of 'Thank god, no more formatting dilemnas for a while'.

Good luck everyone!

So here I am, ass deep in historical fiction, hunger strike, and fireman...yeah.  So I have not been able to get very far until yesterday when the story finished its behind the scenes percolation and I'll be writing this afternoon.  Finishing up the outline and then spend the rest of the time fleshing out the arms, legs, torso and head...maybe it will even be a script...

I have to go to a freaking DENTIST APPOINTMENT that I can't reschedule (because I have too many times this week, natch), and I only have (barely) four pages. I may just have them yank the thing out so I can get back here ASAFP.

And here I am feeling sorry for myself that I still have two scenes to write and then the whole thing to edit to try to make it fit the bloody prompts. Much respect to you. Get it done.....we all need to smash this. I am seeing too may stalwarts bomb out this round!

Sending good thoughts and prayers to which ever God or no God you prefer....

Ugh. I've been sick all week, and I'm really struggling with this one. I'm so tempted to quit, but I know I'll regret it.

I've got six pages, but it's all crap, and I don't know how it's going to end.

I'm done. I have no idea if my story is done, lol, but I am. It's submitted and hopefully without typos because I'm done poking at it.

Don't give up, Diana. I feel you - I've been dealing with an allergic reaction all week, which meant tons of Benadryl, which knocked me out and upset my stomach... ugh! You can do it. Just go with what makes you happy and don't worry about the rest. And if you need to brainstorm, PM me. I'd be glad to toss ideas around with you.

Mine is a lame duck, comes from lack of interest from the writer, but it will be finished.  3 hours till dead line, just got up, did a read for someone and now will shower, get java and do a final push to tidy it up, just wish I had gone with my fist idea as this one is meant to put people to sleep with its lame innuendo style progress (don't give anything away, be sublime)

Thank you! You're so sweet. I hope you're feeling better.

I finally finished a first draft of...something. I think I'm going to take a bath, give it another look and then submit. It's not my favorite thing I've ever written, but at least I didn't drop out.

Good for you!!! :) I'll bet it's better than you think. We're always hardest on ourselves. And you can say you did it! Great job.
