Fantasy / an exchange / a beekeeper.

I had Fantasy for Short Screenplay last year and the object was a beehive. So I guess I’m going to have to be extra creative, haha.

What the hell kind of prompts are those?

After some consideration, I am not unhappy with this!

New genre for me! Should I tell you? Maybe I will.

Or maybe I won't!

Is the suspense killing you yet?

Ha!

Suspense - Insomnia - Army General

This could be fun...

Not random horror, though I've been told my interviews qualify for that genre for some inexplicable reason.

No, I think they're looking for specific horror.  Got a couple ideas, now I just need to make them horrible.  Tomorrow I've got a date; kinda hoping that doesn't go to horribly, then I'll clean the shop, which looks horrific, then I might write something...you get it.

Suspense / Mining / A Puppeteer

I say to you again: Mining. Not jealousy, or jury duty or a nursing home or hyperactivity (or any one of these new personality trait locations that have become topics.) No. MINING. The only one I can see out of all 60 groups that will require DAYS of research to even wrap my mind around it, let alone speak with any kind of authority. I've also been given Fracking, tyvm. And Puppeteer. We all now how timely THEY are. I mean everywhere I turn it's puppeteers, puppeteers all around me filling up my social media. And I signed up in early March. How did I end up in Group 58 with the dreg prompts?

Suspense / childcare / truck driver

Only the political satire / bodyguard prompt can compete with that in the ‘absolute gift’ sweepstakes.

I realise I’ve never been given suspense before, it just tends to creep into a lot of my work anyway.

Bring it.

Being absolutely fair - I suppose we'd all end up just swapping into our preferred genres, avoiding the ones we hate, and never being forced out of our comfort zones...and being forced to write in genres I'm not familiar with has been one of the pleasures of NYCM.

Still. ROMANCE. Ugh.

(I'm two pages in and the romance hasn't started yet! Does anyone know if there's a rule of thumb about how quickly we're meant to get to the point?)

Thriller/hunt/a food delivery driver. I am so pumped. Finally a genre a bit closer to my comfort zone (not that I haven't enjoyed the challenge of genres far removed from what I read/write up to this point). After some brainstorming with my husband, I know exactly what I am writing already. Now if I can just successfully achieve a decent screenplay rather than my usual prose...

I so look forward to your screenplays - they are always so full.

Dang it. No wordplay, no larger than life characters, no absurd plotting that comes straight from the front pages.

Dang it all to heck!

On the plus side--I woke up with my story arc and my characters and my general plot elements.

Can I fit it into 12 pages?

This is the exact opposite of the Short Story Challenge where I threw my entry together 2 hours before the deadline, as I had no ideas and no energy.

Thanks Becky! :)
I've told myself that I'm going to just totally let go and roll with this one organically. No over-thinking the "too many people will do the same thing" bit.

So, as it happens, I work in IT for a local government office (yep - I work at City Hall!!!). Which, while not being intriguing at all does basically mean I see everything that goes on, one way or another. Makes me think. Ya know? Plus, as a singer / songwriter, I've done LOTS of local theater. I think maybe I have some interesting fodder for this challenge. LOL

In trope Romance, you need to at least have the love interests meet each other within the first couple pages. They do not have to get to the romance that soon. Usually it's more about what's keeping them apart right up until later in the story.

Agree. I had Romance in Short Story round 2 and, accordingly, have read a bunch of romances this week. Several times it seems that the writer could cut the entire first page of build up and get right to it (myself included!), leaving room to properly raise the stakes.

Also, romance does not necessarily require a HEA. I'm a big fan of (writing) unfulfilled/unrequited romances, or romances where H&h do not overcome the obstacles by the end (because that's real life).

I woke up this morning and realized I have no idea what 'horror' is, apart from getting a genre I know nothing about with only 24 hours...that would be horrible.

So, apart from going on my date, I guess this weekend is when I read primers on horror.  Kind of embarrassing, really.  I've seen a couple horror movies, read some Steven King, it didn't seem like a big deal.

Like I said, bring it.  The harder the prompt, the more I learn  Big smile

Oh. Sorry. I couldn't help myself. I'm silly when it's early. Tongue

Yup. My mind went there. Then ran away.

I managed to get the romance sparks flying in the third dialogue on Page 1, and by the end of that page had the "activist" element covered. I'm 5-pages into a rough draft and still haven't figured out "chain of command" yet. I'm doomed.

Word of caution on this, though. HEA may not be required, but an "emotionally satisfying" ever-after is. I've judged other romance contests, and not having an emotionally satisfying resolution to the romance can disqualify the book / story from the romance genre. So while it may not be a campy happy-ever-after, you don't want to leave it unresolved. You can pull a Cinderella or you can pull a Romeo and Juliet, but you can't pull a romantic cliffhanger.

Thanks for all the romance advice. I'm probably still going to whiff the genre. I HATE romance.

I would be happy to be a beta reader for you this round if you want. I'm still learning screenwriting but I've done well with romance in short story and flash fiction. (And you were an amazing beta reader for me in short screenplay. My first one got 0 points but the second got 13 points, so I'm learning!)

(I realized I did a quote within a quote within a quote. . that last comment was directed at Niles but I would be happy to be a beta reader for anyone with romance! I was hoping for it again. . I got spy.)

I AM ASTONISHED AT THIS.

I so look forward to your screenplays - they are always so full.

Dang it. No wordplay, no larger than life characters, no absurd plotting that comes straight from the front pages.

Dang it all to heck!

I know, right?  I knew I should have checked, but I used to do it on auto pilot and just thought I'd done it.

I can use the break ... I have to focus on a feature ...

Only my second year doing this:

Action/Adventure, perseverance, a prisoner.

When I woke up to those prompts (loving that GMT delay) I was buzzing; good genre, open character, broad theme.

I have since realised how difficult it can be to show 'perseverance' over twelve pages

Good luck everyone!
