Back with a vengeance. Screenwriting Challenge '18 was my first NYC and I ducked out in the first round. Hoping to do at least a bit better this time!

Becky, "you got this". I can't see who won in 2018, but if the previous years are anything to go by, we need a woman on the list of (past) winners Big smile A space with your name on it??

Loving the parentheses ahaa. Don't know how you keep track of two accounts!

Honestly, the calibre is always so high and I'm yet to handle the pressure of the later rounds, so I won't presume to make it to the final at all! But yes, 2019 is the year that we women achieve world domination, one NYC comp at a time LOL

Same for me!  I drew polisat and flopped hard.  I'm a little nervous!  Eight pages and a whole week feels like more pressure than five pages and 48 hours, because there's TIME!  And SPACE!

I'll join in on the women's side Wink I was somewhere waaayyyy down the line on honorable mentions last year, hoping to do a bit better this year! After short screenplay, I'm excited at the prospect of having so many more pages and so much time again.

Oh, great.  It's a good 'ol girls club is it?  Us men are supposed to look good while we type your memos?  Fetch your coffee?  Answer the phones and pick up your laundry while you sit in the board rooms making deals and splitting the world up between you?

Some day things will change, you know!  You've been objectifying us long enough!  I am man, hear me bellow!

I think I will try this. Screenwriting is by a landslide the hardest kind of writing I have done. But it really made me think visually and improved my ability to write dialogue. So even if I go out after the first round, I think I will do this for the learning experience!

I just went through all three master lists and thanked Suave for every post he made.  That had an effect on his point count!  Big smile

Got to Round 3 in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Got Honorable Mention in the 2016 competition. Had to sit out in 2018, so I'm ready to come back and place with the winners this time. Hey, I can dream, can't I?

Officially registered!! My goal for this year is to actually reach 12 pages. This will be my fourth attempt. And I have never hit that 12th page.

2019: TBD
2018: Historical Fiction (10 pages) - Got an HM for this one! :)
2017: Fantasy (5.5 pages) - This one was absolute torture.
2016: Horror (10.5 pages) - My first attempt at writing a screenplay EVER.

I have a question:  Last year was my first time ever, and they posted the results with their loglines.  So we could get a flavour of those that didn't join the forum...  But they didn't do that for short screenplay competition.  Do you think they've given up because there are too many entrants?  Anyone have any knowledge about this?!

If I had to guess...I would say it's because the two contests have different formats for Round 1. The Screenwriting contest gives 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th... while Short Screenplay gives points to the top 15 scripts. So there's just too many loglines to list! :p

So. Madly, I just signed up for it. It starts at 5am the morning after I get home from a work trip. I start travelling on 24th March, so.... I'll be exhausted!! I'll probably contemplate the prompts while lying on a foam roller on the living-room floor LOL I'll be in far more need of exercise than hours of sitting at my computer BUT tis done. My first Screenplay comp. The current Short Screenplay comp produced my first ever screenplays (as FMau), and I really enjoyed it, so we'll see how the longer format works out.

I paid up my $45 today and then realised I'm away for the entire week. Doh. I'll try and get something down while I'm away because yes, I too have a problem. I think I'll be trapped in an endless cycle of these NYC competitions forevermore... And loving it.

What were the rule changes mentioned?

Something like 'you may only submit once', so when it's up, it's up (if you pardon the expression) - no submitting different drafts as the deadline approaches... It'll be on the page.

Must admit, I've signed up but don't know when it starts :) A problem shared is a problem.......well, shared. Round 2 of Short story is the one that'll be almost impossible for me, IF I make it through. Ach well.

Yeah. Addictive.

I decided to read the Official Rules and thought this was curious:

“Creative Development” includes, but is not limited to, writing an ORIGINAL logline and short screenplay, from first draft to final draft, within the Challenge Screenplay Window. No revisions or missing pages will be accepted once the first attempt at an entry has been received by the LLC. Do NOT supplement your entry with any subsequent mailings or forwarding of documents, as such will be grounds for disqualification and forfeiture of any Entry Fee."

Do you have any idea how much I've been resisting the urge to ask if you wanted in?  How the heck are you?

Aww, thanks. Sitting here with four puncture wounds in my back from where they were messing around by my spine yesterday, but I'm OK. Man, I need a distraction, though.

I told you not to go into the alien space ship, because they always seem to be puncturing things during their examinations!  Sheesh.  Some people never listen!

Nice to see you back!  Pun...well...when have I ever used puns on this board?

YAY!

It's addictive in kind of a good way. I have the hopeless belief that this time, surely, I'll win.

Win?  I'm impressed.  My unremitting and unrequited goal is far more humble.

You'll be glad you took the plunge; the format requires a different approach.  Everything has to be done visually, and if you are accustomed to writing in prose there's a speed bump or two to get over, but in the end a story is a story is a story.  Being good at one format will make you better at the other.
