What'd you get and how are you feeling about it?!?!

I'm in Group 2 (my lucky number)!

Comedy / A pediatrician's office / Tofu

Not instantly inspired, but also not instantly paralyzed...so I'd say I'm off to a good start!!

Good luck everyone. :)

I think I'm feeling about the same as you, Steph!

Group 5

Sci-fi / A factory / A laser pointer

Thinking on what TYPE of sci-fi I want... I also made the mistake of checking the scores of my heatmates from the previous rounds and YIKES it's a stiff competition.

Wishing everyone good luck!!!

Action adventure / a rail yard / a chisel

Actually pretty good prompts given that I have approximately three and a half minutes to work on it this weekend. It's 5.40am in the UK and I'm at my desk already...

I'm in Group 3 - Drama/A school detention room/A teacup.

I'm actually really excited about these prompts since drama was what I wanted, but they also seem kind of too good to be true, so I'm psyching myself out a bit. Also it's way too late (almost 6am here lol) and I need to go to bed, but I'm just excited about the idea I have.

Good luck everyone!

Got excited/nervous when I saw your name in Group 2!! Looking forward to the challenge!

And yes, I will no longer struggle to spell pediatrician after this weekend. So if nothing else, I will have that! ;)

We have a brutal group... last year's winner (Snark) and Tim and Rossiny and I don't know who else....!   I like a challenge, but this is going to be bloody!  Oh well.  It's all about the process, right?!  And at least we'll be able to compare scripts!

The best I've ever done was Flash Fiction 2013.  Came in third, won $2500 or so and a bunch of software.  Considering I've done about 16 competitions, I was due a win.  Tongue

Not panicked yet though biggest fear is being cliche! I've seen so many of these types of movies that I don't want to copy inadvertently!

Good luck to all! Just have fun and enjoy the journey! Big smileClap

Group 1
Genre: Romantic comedy
Location: A waiting line or queue
Object: A carrot

And... I just submitted! I can't say that I'm "done" (i.e., that I won't re-submit tomorrow with new edits), but my city has a huge snowfall, and people keep losing power. So far, I've been lucky, but since I actually had something down to 5 pages exactly, I figured better to get an early version of it in while I could than wait and potentially lose power!

Good luck, all!

Also group 7 /historical fiction / military parade / potato

Definitely a challenge! Then I found a local WW2 story in my town featuring a military parade and a kind of heartbreaking family story. Here's hoping I can do it justice!

Same, except opposite lol. I had no story idea at all by the time my power went out at 10am yesterday. My writerduet app wouldn't work on my phone because apparently weather knocked a sprint tower out and my phone would only work minimally without wifi. Ended up finally coming up with an idea and handwriting a crappy first draft. Ventured out in the 14 inches of snow to a local restaurant because we couldn't miss the Chiefs game (go Chiefs!!!), so I took my laptop and charged it while I was there. By last night, the wd app would work on my phone, so I was able to do a little on it that way, but it's not as easy to work on the phone of course. Thank goodness I woke up to power this morning (not everyone in my town has it back yet). Now it's going to be a long day making up for lost time, but at least I don't have to spend it at a coffee shop like I thought I might lol.

I feel like that alone could be a good story idea. A homeless person is starving to death in a rail yard and their savior shows up with food, only when they discover it's baked peas up for offer, they kill the savior using a chisel.

Am I crazy?

I finished my first draft at 5 am Sunday, about 12 hours earlier than I normally would. My screenplay has NO dialogue.

Action-Adventure, Rail Yard, Chisel

I'm more of a rom-com guy and you have no idea how bizarre this feels.

I also have group 7 /historical fiction / military parade / potato

I like how the assignments are released at midnight. I tend to wake up in the middle of the night, so I get to see what I get. Then I ponder a bit before going to sleep. Usually I have some sort of idea when I wake up.

Now, is it a good enough idea? I'm not sure, but I don't have time this weekend to do other versions. We'll see. Good luck all.

Good job getting a story out of some sort. I’m stuck dead in my tracks with this one. I’ve always dreaded Hist. Fict. And never got it until the only time i make it to the third round. 5p.m. 7 hours until deadline and I haven’t the faintest clue. and I refuse to write a cheesy sentimental story.

Definitely a challenge! Then I found a local WW2 story in my town featuring a military parade and a kind of heartbreaking family story. Here's hoping I can do it justice!

I inadvertently hit some feels of my own with mine lol, which I'm hoping is a good thing.
What's really funny is that about a week or two ago, I was driving to work thinking "Damn, I wish I paid more attention in school. I don't know a damn thing about history. That's sh*tty of me."
...The Universe got me there. LOL Kinda feels like that big fight scene at the end of Ghostbusters where the gist of some dialogue is "I'm not good in a fight" and the reply is "Well, good news, here's your chance to fix that." Definitely picking up some sort of history book today for future betterment hahaha.

Submitted and 100% done with Sci-Fi LOL Love watching it, CANNOT for the life of me write it. This was painful, lads. Shoutout to betas, your feedback unanimously told me I needed more info in the 5 pages and I had plot holes for days. So I wrote a whole new thing in the same world, taking on your advice.

But yes. I am so so done Wacko

It doesn't have to be true, just set in the past. I'd suggest thinking of all the things you could do with a potato, like play with it, trade it, use it to make a bayonet safe, put it on a velvet cushion if you happened to be 15th/early 16th century Spanish military returning with treasure from the New World, you could chew on it, stick eyes, nose and mouth in it to make a potato head, you can print flyers or make stamps with it, throw it at someone, put it in a sock as a sort of cosh, make it look like a grenade, use several to make toy soldiers with...um, feed a military mascot with one, use it to make vodka (May Day parades).......um........hand some out as you take back a town from eg Nazis and parade through the streets (Paris?) And the military parade could be real, children, toy soldiers, a school re-enactment, ..... Me, I'm not in this round, but I'd go with Spain. Seville, maybe. Or... not sure.

Anyway, best of luck, everyone's rooting for ye all.

Another member of the Group 7 potato parade here Big smile I don't mind historical fiction, but found the military parade location really challenging...I may have fudged that a bit.

Glad to see others from the group here, looking forward to reading your stories when the time comes!

Hey thanks for the suggestions!

I’ve started reading wiki pages about potatoes. Mr potato head. The poisonous parts of the potato plant. Historical references to potatoes. Etc.

I think the military location is screwing me here. It’s a VERY specific “location” that cannot be fabricated because military parades are documented and I can’t add any mishaps or faux pas that didn’t occur because of the HIST FICT aspect. And I don’t have time to research a time period long ago, so I’m trying to stick to parades that occurred within the last 80 years or so where English was relatively the same as today.

I will think harder using some of your suggestions. Thanks!

But you could invent a rehearsal of one...... :) Or have children play-parading, but set it in, say, late 1945.
Or go back to a time when Kings and Dukes were always parading their troops as a show of power. And there are countries where they're every year (Russia, Spain...Napoleon did masses, too), so you could have the action happening in the crowd watching the parade. You're just a bit limited to post-1492, so Romans, Greeks etc are out.

Thank you to all my beta-readers. You're all rock stars.

Submitted. Happy enough. Think I did something with the prompts (comedy / pediatrician's office / tofu) that no one else will. Not that I'll ever know since not everyone posts here. So let's just go with yes, superfreakinoriginal. I need a nap.

Just submitted my first horror story! I'll admit, I loved it more than I thought I would. First 12 hours were sheer panic, just couldn't figure out how to work in a dressing room and a megaphone. But, I'm REALLY happy with the end product... which terrifies me a little haha.

So, as usual I spent the majority of the weekend panicking and researching so many ideas. Eventually, it was more inspiration from my youngest who told me about the Jorogumo (Run now Penny4Them ). Had a huge panic about 2 hours ago when the link to submit was rejecting me and I realised I was not seeing the Challenge 3 link for some reason. I'm going to do a final read through for any glaring mistakes and then go to sleep. Crazy times! Good luck y'all. Hope you all post come the email mid-week! :)

Submitted!  Feeling alright about this one, mostly because I was feeling so awful about it up until a couple hours ago.  I don't think I've ever written so many completely different drafts of the same thing.

I'm just thankful for strong beta readers and the time to edit!!  Editing is everything.
