Haven't done it before, but the slightly different prompt approach intrigues me! Just signed up, along with an old coworker who saw my "please give me $5 off" FB post.

Mostly I'm just nervous that 8 days will be too much time for me to stay focused and that I'll completely shoot myself in the foot. (I work best under more imminent/absurd deadlines.) Or perhaps the long game is just a part of adulting that I need to woman-up and accept? Confused

I'm in! Also concerned that 8 days might be too long for lil' ol' ADHD me to keep focused, but it's so nice to WRITE. And left to my own devices, I just binge netflix. (Currently on 'The Good Place,' which is AMAZING).

I've signed up too!! Not sure how it'll go, but I think it's the opposite problem for me - work is RIDICULOUS and while I managed to have weekends free for flashfic (all but the final, apparently LOL), I never have 8 days off, and working 12+ hour days is pretty common... not sure if I'll be able to get it done!!!

But i'm so so so keen to try!!!

I'm in, too.

This will be my third go in Short Story. My strategy, given the extra time, has been draft by Tuesday night with beta and revision from Wednesday through Saturday. Of course, everyone's approach is different! The only thing I'd advise is don't wait too long to get things started.

And the luxury of words... it's a beautiful thing...

I'm out!  Going to work at a long story contest (17,000 words) for the Writers of the Future contest aka the L. Ron Hubbard Science Fiction and Fantasy Contest, this will take all of my time I'm sure.  I enjoyed NYCM and good luck to everyone in the next contest!

I just signed up! It'll be my first attempt. I like the idea of having more time. And given how many words I always had to cut from my first draft in the FFC, I like the longer word limit too.

I’m all signed up! (Might’ve dove so on the first day.) After competing in FFC, those eight days seem like forever! Last year, I researched the genre for the first few days, reading some short stories in my assigned genre to get a feel for it, took notes, had a couple of plotty ideas by day 3-4, and started drafting after that with the final version day on day 7 just needing polishing. I’ve been assigned a different genre for every round of these comps so far, and I’m sort of excited to keep that going. I’m dying to pull Sci Fi.

I'm in!!! I just made my awkward money-saving FB post and signed up today.

I'm intrigued by how the SSC is set up differently and it seems like it will be a lot harder, at least for me! 8 days for challenge 1??? Genre/SUBJECT/CHARACTER!?! I like how each challenge is a little different within the SSC though, should I make it through. Definitely looking forward to it! Big smile

I'm still on the fence. I'll make up my mind once I get the judges' feedback from this FF round. Feedback was my main goal for entering this competition, and-frankly speaking-the judges' feedback has on occasion not been as insightful or helpful as I was hoping. In some instances, I've found the feedback from you all much more helpful.

Then again, I have to acknowledge that perhaps my stories have been so unremarkable that there was really not much for the judges to comment on.

I’m in, cautiously. I bombed out of SSC in 2018 but did well in SC with the same time span, so who knows. 2500 words feels positively indulgent!

I do like the themed prompts over the setting prompts in Flash, I think. More room for creative interpretation.

Well possibly foolishly, I've signed up. I figure that if I approach it like Flash but with a few days to beta and edit tagged on, I'll manage the time and also get the adrenaline thing the first couple of days. Like sidle_by, I work 12+ days most days, so the weekdays need to be doable. I'll bomb, but I'll learn.

You know, I started out doing SSC, but I find I like flash fiction better, now that I've done it a couple of times. Having said that, signing up today, before the deadline, because I so enjoy these contests. Might even try the short screenplay again when it happens, even though I crashed and burned the one and only time I tried it.

Sadly I have exams this year, so I'm out. My strategy is usually to brainstorm to avoid the obvious, pump a story out, then spend every remaining minute agonizing over editing.

I might give feedback where I can if people are okay with that. I want to stay in practice.

Registering tomorrow. I probably would be all about it either way, having enjoyed my first NYCM challenge so far (this one; FFC 2018 is my first). But now that I have decided to gather this stuff together into some peculiar vaguely flower-themed anthology, I feel like I have a mission to continue. Yes, that means I am that obnoxious. More flowers right into SSC 2019. Though I may go back and do other groups' prompts and so forth to fill out the rest of the collection beyond that... eventually even I am going to want to move beyond flowers ^_~.

I keep debating...and may go on doing so until it's too late.
Exhausted and burned-out (and it's coming up so soon!).
And though I know it shouldn't be all about the winning, I always crap out very early in the SSC. Flash and the shorter time constraints seem to suit my temperament more.

Be flexible with the prompts, they don't always have to be a literal interpretation. Ie: one prompt I had was 'a test'. I took this as a test of patience or faith.

Using beta readers is also super helpful! I had a couple that made my story flow much smoother.

I agree - I had "rainbow" as my subject matter one challenge (although how is a rainbow a "subject" not an "object"?) I used the lyrics to Somewhere Over the Rainbow as a theme and took top slot.

Biggest tip, is use what feels like a luxurious amount of time wisely. There's time to bounce ideas off your friends and have alpha AND Beta readers. There's time to walk away for a day and come back with fresh perspective. There's time to do research if you get HistFic and time/words to really concentrate on detailed, balanced worldbuilding for fantasy & SciFi.

Or you can be like me and spend the whole week noodling and end up writing like a crazy person on Friday & Saturday and freaking out because you forgot that this is SS not FF and the dang thing's due Sat night not Sun night!

I don’t think I’m doing the SSC this year.  the second challenge weekend of the end of March Is just so hard while having a day job that follows the tax season cycle.

I do like the longer time though—i really struggle getting a story down my writing polished in 48 hours.  The flash challenge has helped me immensely but having the additional time to be able to step back and really see what is working and have the room to think of solutions is much more my speed.

I was thinking of trying the screenplay challenge next.

And I agree with being creative and flexible with the subject prompts but also make sure your character is solidly in the story—not necessarily a main character but not a throw away either.

I just signed up, and I'm really surprised I decided to!

I tried SSC a couple years ago, had a wretched first round, and decided to stick to FFC only from then on...but looking back on it, I think the genre threw me for a loop, and since my procrastinator's brain works best right before a deadline, I spent 7 of the 8 days not researching anything for historical fiction--and the 8th day writing in a total panic.

I need to work on disciplining myself and working more efficiently (for FFC as well!), so I hope I'll do better with the whole process this time!

Or on the other hand rigidly adhere to a narrow definition. The judges last year clearly viewed only splatterpunk/graphic as horror. If I drew it again I'd probably stick very closely to physically horrify and not get too psychological. There's pretty much no way to know whether your judges in your heat will like flexible or will ding anything that doesn't strictly follow the most well-known genre tropes.

I'd say "don't procrastinate" but that would make me a really big hypocrite!

Done. Registered. Excitement building. FFC 2018 has been my first NYCM experience, and I already can't wait to try on SSC 2019. (When really my mind should be on finishing strong with FFC this weekend, but my focus is crap. There are, like, twelve hundred little strings going from my brain to all the different things on which I should be "focusing.")

On that note, maybe be flexible with the "subject", but not as flexible with the genre. Personally I really like psychological horror as opposed to boring old splatter porn   so it really is too bad you got dinged for that.

You're crazy. So am I, because I'm in, too. And I, also, hope to finally make it past a first round.

Like many others, my problem with this one is that there's too much time and too large a word count. I do better at the last minute, and 1000 is more my wheelhouse. But we shall see. Onward and upward!

I'm pretty sure that's my problem, too. Far too long to obsess and tinker. It not only affects me emotionally, but takes a lot of the juice out of my writing.

That is my philosophy as well -- which means I have a larger word count to do at the last minute! I know it doesn't have to be right there, but I don't believe in coming in too much under quota, as that would be a waste.

In! FF is definitely my preferred genre and is my favorite of the NYCM events. Short Story is a good ol’ character-building exercise. And... I mean *my* character. Very helpful to read others’ attack plan on this thread. I suspect my “wait until the pressure of the final 48 hours hits” may have been part of my previous crash/burn experiences.

Nah, it's just the timing of this comp that fails me (or the other way around). I'll surely be back next time.

Happy New Year, all.

Speaking of Beta, how does it work in SSC? Is it a bit more... scattered?...given the longer time frame and people working in different ways? Or is there more alpha and beta reading? Just curious.

I am hoping it goes better for me than it did last year.

2018:

Day 1: Get prompt. Think.
Day 2: Think.
Day 3: Think, with an edge of panic.
Day 4: Write one paragraph of garbage.
Day 5: Rewrite garbage paragraph 30 times.
Day 6: Write a skeleton of a terrible, implausible plot full of unfillable holes.
Day 7: Revisit other ideas hysterically.
Day 8: Desperately ask my husband if it’s good, accept his lies, polish up garbage, submit.

At least in flash you only get 48 hours of thinking and garbaging!

I'm just getting back onto the forums. I am in for this year. I did the challenge a couple of years ago and received an honorable mention on the first round. I was pretty happy with that result. I took last year off to take care of my personal life and am back this year. I'm looking forward to the fun!

The complicated thing about the short story competition is that each round gets shorter, and the overall word count you can use also gets shorter. So only round 1 is eight days!! Maybe that's causing the confusion!! Confused

I signed up and have been excitedly looking at all the time I'd have to write something!! So many days, such luxury!

Turns out, my father will be staying with me for the entire time, and I am also on call and working at various stages. So, in reality, I think I'll have LESS time to produce more words. I'm so pumped, can't wait to see what we get (and who I'm writing with/against!!)

I'm a first timer, too but I love the challenge. I am a free flow writer so I can write pretty quickly but 8 days is too long to keep going back and changing it! More I touch it, worse it gets (Momma saying "stop playing with that or it won't get well."  Who needs adulting?! (which spell check changes to adulating, by the way.)

Glad to read it sir! Is that a Beholder from Eye of the Beholder in your profile pic? (showing my 90s computer game geekery here)

Oh it's a beholder alright, though I can't say if it's from that specific dungeon crawler! I do however respect the knowledge, good sir!

I'm in! First time participating in SSC. I did FFC awhile back, but couldn't participate this past round. Looking forward to this!

I'm back in! This is my... something-th time in one of these challenges - they're always good fun. I think I'm definitely going to try and get some beta-testing this time around, something I've not normally done.
Can't wait; good luck everyone!

I hemmed and hawed over the past few months, but I'm in!

I've just started an alpha swap of novels this month with my writing group, so my only writing should be this contest while reading my partner's novel. Hopefully some productive procrastination will mean I get progress on both...

Good luck to all! This is my third year participating, and last year marked a big improvement to my writing after three rounds. I'm hoping to get the opportunity to write three more stories this time!

I'm in again! (Second time for Short Story?) Here's hoping for good luck with the prompts on Friday with time to write during Saturday's blizzard!

This will be my second time entering and I hope to make it past the second round this time. I'm not well versed in much except for horror, sci-fi and comedy, so we'll see how things pan out once the assignments are released!

Looking forward to it though, a good challenge keeps things fresh and I don't belong to any writing communities nor know any other writers, it gets a bit lonely over here LOL

I’m in! I did the SSC last year but what with having done the FFC in between I’d forgotten how much time you get in it! Having been reminded of that (and lord knows after the FFC 8 days feels like sheer luxury), I’m aiming to get it written in time to actually have it beta’d, which I didn’t manage for any of them last year.

I'm in!  First time, registered a few hours ago!  The active community here seemed too good to pass up, not enough writing groups where I'm from.  The Genre-Subject-Character prompts seem like a good constraint to keep me creative!

I'm in - and bought an entry for a friend as a birthday present too.

Only my second NYC competition. First once was the Flash Fiction - my aim was to score any points with either story, and was delighted to score points with both!

Now for the Short Story...hmm..aim is...probably just to beat my friend :-)
