In theory I'm going to be working twenty hour days that weekend, assuming I don't also have to work overtime.  Might give this one a pass.

Short Screenplay opens in the not-as-distant-as-you-think future, so I will have another opportunity to be humiliated before the end of the year.

An admirer of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, eh?  This is fortunate given the administration of these contests are students of Donatien Alphonse François de Sade.  A match made on the internet, to be sure.

Yeah, it wouldn't work with Facebook for me, either -- it made me go to Twitter. I seem to recall it did the same thing last time. Perhaps it's a browser issue?

Other way around for me. Twitter wouldn't hear it, so I had ot get my code via FB.

Weird.

I told editor/spouse that maybe I wouldn't sign up for this one.

She was like, "Why?"

And I couldn't come up with a reason.

She did make me promise not to get too crazy about it.

I said I didn't know what she was talking about. I don't get crazy.

She said, "You don't know yourself very well." Then she left for work.

And I immediately signed up.

I know what's coming.  The writing gods were too kind to me last year.  Which means:

Challenge One--
Genre: Political Science
Location: A sculpture park
Object: Hemorrhoid cream

Challenge Two--
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Location: A prison camp
Object: A hackey sack

These are phenomenal.

Though I don't think I could survive yet another RomCom.

I can't wait to see if my RomCom screenplay about a man and his horse made it through, though... But no more. No more RomCom.

Yep, my pattern has recently been Sci Fi either before or after Political Satire (ahem, the genre formerly known to me as Voldemort).

It's gone something like this...

Flash Fiction 2017:
Round 1: Political Satire - "All the expletives...!!!" Yep. Nailed it - big fat ZERO. Goodbye cruel, world.
Round 2: Sci Fi - "Yes! Redemption! Vindication!" My first 15, ever! But alas, not enough to advance...

Short Story 2018:
Round 1: Sci Fi - "Yahoo! This is great! Couldn't have asked for better prompts!" And we move ahead...
Round 2: Political Satire - "All the expletives...!!!" If I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die my way (points if you know what movie that comes from). And... HM. Like a higher-tier rejection - still a rejection but the sting isn't as biting. Goodbye, cruel world.

So. Let's see how the cookie crumbles this time.

I enter these for fun, mostly, after realizing early on there are phenomenal writers in these contests, but what I find is that I get great ideas from these prompts, which I can then shape into stories/scripts I can use elsewhere.

I do not know what "wins" in these contests, TBH. It seems that the contest judges are idiosyncratic in ways that do not map to my idiosyncrasies...

Onward and upward.

Good luck to everyone else. I will read with interest.

So.... write a crappy story in an hour for challenge one.  turn it in.  Send it to beta readers. go do your thing. If there's time, come back and betamorph it and turn in another version.

You know you don't wanna just skip school..... ;)

What Nix said... besides something is better than nothing. And you never know - I wrote a piece once at a music festival in between sets, on my phone. It wasn't particularly polished, but it ended up earning just enough points to squeak me through to the next round.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

yes—- here we go.... July 13 midnight!
I did this last year for the first time— did not get past the second round. I feel foggy about the details about posting the story and if there are guidelines for format (like line spacing and font).
I am assuming that when the email with the prompt arrives,  there will be a link provided with information for such things.
Good luck all and have fun!

Bring it on! Although if England make the World cup final on Sunday then I'm going to have a major distraction...

Having done all four comps now, Flash is definitely my favourite. Looking forward to seeing what prompts everyone gets!

I wasn’t going to do this to myself but as it gets closer—think I’m going to.  My husband isn’t thrilled with the idea of playing support role to another flurry of weekend writing and keeps asking how that neglected novel is going.  My “this will inspire me” line is wearing thin.

But I haven’t made it through round 1 in the  flash fiction yet so I really feel I need to nail the pacing of a super short piece.

3rd time lucky you think, Lisa? Actually, as things have turned out, I will need more than luck this time. A miracle would be handy.

Oh. Gee. The editors of the anthology who bought a story back in March say it's coming for edits 'by the end of the week.' Me: Yay! Great! Before vacat...oh crap.

That's okay. I can do this.

Q. What are the format requirements for the stories?
A. There are no requirements regarding spacing or margins, but we ask that all stories are written in 12 point Courier, New Courier or Times New Roman typeface. Also, the title page must only contain the title of the story and a short synopsis (1-2 sentence description of the story). The author's name must not appear anywhere in the story or on the title page to keep the document anonymous for judging.

Bang Howdy, Pardners! I see Nixie is still holding down the fort - you rock :D

Skipped last year due to relocating countries and other priorities, but stoked to be back. I've dragged in a writing buddy for their first time here, and told them you were all really nice and awesome and that it would be great fun. If they get romcom first round I'll never live it down.

In NYCMF-specific news, the first story I ever did here - "Egg" - will be on Pseudopod, currently scheduled for Nov. 30th.

Can't wait for Friday!

outline

seriously - then do a detailed outline.

By that time you will be at 6-800 words and you can decide which sections of your outline to cut so that you have enough word count to fill in the rest. ;)

ok - it was semi-seriously.  But really, it is.  Mostly i'd say "expect to flub the first one, use the forum feedback to figure out how you flubbed - and then use that knowledge to adapt your writing approach and dazzle them in Challenge 2!

Advice:

https://lizschriftsteller.wordpress.com/2016/05/11/word-counts-part-one-how-to-budget/" rel="nofollow - Budget your word count.  You only have room for maybe 3 scenes, of 333 words each if you do a 3-act structure.  It's SO SHORT.  Usually it's easier to do the following:

1. One continuous scene
2. No more than 2 - 3 named characters
3. Listen to Nixie and do either an outline or...
4. Make lists of your plot points / prompts / characters and then cut where you have too many

https://lizschriftsteller.wordpress.com/2016/07/18/political-satire-comedic-writing-part-two/" rel="nofollow - Don't freak out if you get Political Satire.   (Or any unfamiliar genre.)  Keep calm, do some cursory reading by checking out the http://www.nycmidnight.com/genres.htm" rel="nofollow - recommended genre definitions , and see where the tropes fall so you can write your best story.  For Political Satire specifically, I keep pointing people at this blog post I wrote a few years back and it seems to help.

If you get stuck, post something on the forum asking for advice.  It's a friendly competition - this first round you're only *really* competing against the 30 or so people in your group.

This is great advice - it's REALLY easy to end up world & character building, having an in depth beginning and then have to rush the denouement because you are all out of words. A lot of inexperienced Flash is top heavy.

I'm not the sort of person that uses that mystical creature - the outline - that folks are so fond of. However, I do try to identify my major plot points before I start writing so that I have a trajectory and don't have to cut a thousand words in editing...

Um, hate to bust any bubbles Nodsy., but isn't that kinda "exactly what an outline is..." This is the one writer-occasion where it still counts, even if you don't put it on paper. Lol

I survived Political Satire twice. Still have a couple of bullet holes to show for it, but when I stopped freaking out about it, I actually had fun.

Seriously, whatever genre you get, just embrace it and run with it. Oddball prompts stretch us as writers. (But yelling, screaming, and gnashing of teeth are perfectly acceptable in the first five minutes of getting your genre assignment).

And, welcome!
