Congrats to everyone who made it!

I only got an HM, but I'm not going to lie, it's kind of a relief. I heard back from an agent today who's requested a full copy of a MS of mine, and now I can focus fully on that the next few days.

Best of luck to everyone who is moving on.

Wow not even an HM. Would love to see the other stories in my heat. Must be killer. Congrats to my heatmate that shared their story for the HM. I thought it was one of the better ones I read this round.

Good luck with the 24 hr challenge everyone. Its been real, y'all on the forums are infinitely more valuable than the contest itself. Probably wont do it again, but thanks for making it enjoyable everyone!

I was thrilled to get an HM in heat 14 because a) there was really stiff competition and b) I now get to sleep in on Mother's Day (Australia time) instead of cry-writing and panicking.

Congratulations to all who took part in the challenge and best of luck to those advancing!

An honourable mention? What a load of sh*t. More like dishonourable mention because they dishonoured the written word. I bet they wanted to give the amateur writers some more confidence. Sigh, I guess I'll have to actually try in the Flash Fiction Competition. I guarantee two judges gave me top marks and the third judge had terrible taste, and I am sure this will be represented in the feedback. That's the only possible explanation for why I finished fourth. My story was clearly superior. That's not ego, that's just a fact.

Oh well. It's everyone else who competes in this tournament that will pay the price for this egregious mistake. I was going to win this Short Story Contest and disappear into the sunset. Now I'm going to win every one of these NYC Midnight writing contests for the rest of eternity and ruin everyone's fun until the dust that remains of this place will be long erased by the wind, and you can all thank the judge that made it happen.

No more half-assing short stories in ten hours like I've done so far, trying to give you all a chance to win, while you tear your hair out putting everything you have into mediocre stories. No more Mr. Nice, Mattrick. No more. Pure extirpation of the competition is what the future is. Nothing but skull bashing in all your future. And my girl, Lucille? Lucille is thirsty. She is a vampire bat.

HM for me. So many of my very favourite stories - that I thought were no brainers for the finals - haven't gone through. And some brilliant stories made it. All the best to those who will be scribbling on Saturday.

(...I don’t know if that dude is serious.)

So anywaaaaay, I haven’t been able to be very active on the forums because my job basically blew up, but I’ve read so many great stories in the forums. There are obviously a lot of talented writers in this contest, and turning around a story under these time constraints is toooooouuuuuuugh. I am honored and lucky to have made it to the next round, and can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with.

Having said that- if you didn’t make it to round 3, remember that writing is subjective and you never know what will or will not strike a chord with judges. If you go to Amazon and look up your most favorite book, you can check the reviews and find someone who hates it. If you check your least favorite book, you’ll find someone who loves it. That’s the thing about writing- you put something out there and have no control over how it’s received.

So. Awesome job for everyone who completed and submitted a story in any round of this contest. It’s the second time I’ve entered and the first time I didn’t even complete a story. (I got political satire and went NOPE.)

AAAAAH. SERIOUS PANIC.

So, I got through, major excitement. BUT I have a bit of a problem.

I thought if I'd got through I'd be writing the 24 hours before my wedding but I've just read another conversation saying we get prompts on the Friday to write on the Saturday. That's the day I get married. The actual day. Good Lord.

Can somebody whose brain isn't as frazzled as mine spell it out for me? I'm in the UK. When will I actually be writing this story?!

Good Lord, this is a short story in its own right!  Congratulations on both counts!

In the UK you'll get the prompts at 5am Saturday morning and will need to submit by 5am Sunday morning.... so yeah, not ideal for you. Maybe get up at 5, blitz something first thing in the morning?!

HM here. Pretty bummed out about it, but the competitors in my heat were well represented in the forum and the standard was high.

Good luck to all you round three-ers.

I've been procrastinating about writing a short story for a different project for yonks, so think I might PRETEND I am in round three and use the deadlines to crack my personal whip.

On the bright side - I entered my round one story in a well regarded literary comp here in Oz and just received an email yesterday to say it is a finalist, so yay.

I think my round 2 story has enough puff to place somewhere, but after re-reading it today (while sobbing into my hanky) I can see it is way over the top with pretentious profoundnesses (like that one) and needs to be hosed off with a pressure gun and re-written in a simpler style.

See you in the FFC.

Congratulations! You'll always remember your wedding day but memories of this competition will dissolve to oblivion soon enough. You could consider getting up early, writing about how you feel on this most precious and memorable day, and submitting it as your story. That way, regardless of the prompts, you'll have it forever. Wishing you a wonderful, wonderful day!

So I have a crazy idea.  What if anyone who didn't make the final round (from R2 or R1) and who fancy a go at 24 hour challenge - JUST DOES IT ANYWAY!

Someone could post prompts on here at the same time as the OTHER comp and then we just submit entries underneath.  We could do a poll to cast votes OR just have them there for critique.  Personally, I just wanted the challenge. I wouldn't be bothered about being a winner (so poll would be redundant) but I am gutted to be missing out on writing.

If someone in the ether gives me an 'aye' then I'll start a thread.

I don't mind setting the prompts too - and I promise not to give myself an advantage...

I have had multiple competitions in the same weekend. Accidentally bought tickets to a music festival once without looking at my schedule & ended up writing between sets in a crowd of like 5 thousand people. Two weekends ago I wrote my R2 submission for YeahWrite in between the revelries for my sister's wedding.

But this takes the cake. Congratulations on moving on and many happy returns for your wedding day, Zeggy!

It's not about showing anyone anything next time. I don't need to prove anything to anyone. I outclassed my heat. I have a feeling I lost because of an editing leave-in, which would be beyond insulting to my work. I'm sure some judge with the taste of a dung beetle saw the mistake and will write PROOF READ YOUR WORK instead of leaving real criticism, and that will be the judge who owes me the 6,000 dollars I would have won.

As I said though, it's tough luck for everyone else. When the FFC starts back up, dark clouds will roll in on this place as I make my entrance. No one else is going to stand a chance. Not even tasteless judges will be able to stop me from winning.

First year participating, ABSOLUTELY STOKED to go through to the final round. The two stories that placed above mine in my heat were not posted in the forum, so I couldn't comment on them, but CONGRATS to you both.

I'm not letting any sour apples in my heat bring me down. There was no conspiracy, there was no "judge's error" or "bad taste." There were three more successful stories than yours, and I won't let you or your Negan gifs take ANY BIT of this feeling away from me.

There's always a thread of complaints when the results are late, but I think we should celebrate the fact that they came in early! This gives the finalists an extra day to shuffle their schedules and/or freak out.

If someone in the ether gives me an 'aye' then I'll start a thread.

I don't mind setting the prompts too - and I promise not to give myself an advantage...

I would totally do it with you! I would do it for the feedback. I have learned soooooooo much from the feedback I've gotten already. This forum has been amazing. I am in if you decide to do it!

I only got an HM, but I'm not going to lie, it's kind of a relief. I heard back from an agent today who's requested a full copy of a MS of mine, and now I can focus fully on that the next few days.

Best of luck to everyone who is moving on.

I am really surprised your story didn't make it, but CONGRATS on the MS request! Please let us know when it's published so I can buy an autographed copy. :-)

I'm not letting any sour apples in my heat bring me down. There was no conspiracy, there was no "judge's error" or "bad taste." There were three more successful stories than yours, and I won't let you or your Negan gifs take ANY BIT of this feeling away from me.

I CAN'T WAIT for Saturday.

Didn't make it this time. I was secretly hoping for at least an HM but no such luck. On the plus side, I burned some bridges skipping Easter dinner to write last time and booking out half of Mother's Day weekend probably would not have been the smartest move.

I'm interested to get the judge's feedback as it seems some of the winning stories in my heat (17) were more sci fi than traditional suspense. Think Black Mirror. I'm going to post my story here and see if it's worth re-writing and submitting elsewhere.

It has been a rough week, so rough that not making it through to round 3 hardly stings (and I was really hoping). This, though. This whole thing made me laugh.

Of course he’s kidding, AND of course he isn’t kidding. This is every writer’s id, laid out honestly and hilariously. This is self-aware AF. This is the fuel. This is how people eventually succeed.

Of course, congrats to everybody who advanced! You absolutely deserve to bask. And thanks, Mattrick, for the stress relief.

I had a feeling this might happen...the first heat I got not great feedback from beta's and forum but placed 1st anyway. This round I had so many people say 'I'm sure you'll place!' that I was worried that it would backfire and I wouldn't place HA!  I was right Unhappy  HM is kinda nice but I was so looking forward to having an opportunity to write a new story!
I also found that none of the winning stories in my heat posted in the forum so that was kinda a bummer.
I saw that some stories I read that I thought were AMAZING didn't even place at all! I am sorry if you find yourself disappointed like me...seriously there is some quality fiction out there not advancing.
Now I am looking forward to going back and reading some of the stories that DID place! I am sure they are phenomenal :)

You know exactly how I feel about you not progressing! Some may post and boast about travesties, but yours truly is!
I couldn't have produced what I did for round 2 without you and your wonderful encouragement and help, nor from so many other shining lights of warmth and support on here and all the help and feedback along the way.

You're a special person Lisa and a wonderful writer!

I'm trying the screenplay challenge for the first time this year. So although I didn't move on in the short story, I've still got screenplay to worry about :D Although since this is my first year dong that, I don't expect to make it past the first round.

I was right. Thank you for being a f**king moron, Judge 1761. Learn to write a sentence.

I didn't get through, but I'd have been shocked if I did - mystery scares me as a genre and the piece needed a tonne of work!

After my forum feedback, I was dreading what the judges would say. But it was super positive, different to what other writers had said, and it just made me want to write more. What's that? I've got constructive criticism and DON'T want to quit writing forever? Dear god I'm finally learning - YES!

Congrats to everyone who are going forward, you're already winners in my eyes Tongue

Got an HM, but I'm pretty happy with that. It's an improvement on last year, when I was knocked out after Round 1 (albeit with an HM).

Good luck to everyone tackling Round 3!

Didn't place at all.

Problem is, only one person in my heat placed.  There were a couple of stories that I thought should move on.  Mine - not so much.  The peer reviews I got on the forum showed up some very valid holes in my story, which I knew the judges would immediately pounce on.

But, considering how good some of the other stories were...I'd LOVE to read the ones that did make it!
