Yep.

If I get to the final, it's on the same day that I'll be driving eight hours from New Jersey to North Carolina, so that will be fun. But I'm entering on the expectation of not getting that far, so should be fine.

You never know. I managed to make the finals last year (first and only time in NYCM for me!) But I always enter these things with zero expectations anyway.

Of course, Screenplay overlaps with Fiction War, which I've also signed up for and have had TERRIBLE luck with so far.

Look forward to seeing you in Screenplay! :)

In.  Looks like the prompts drop the same day as fiction war, so any excess words get caught by the other bucket.

I'm in it to win it!

And I expect to have a similar experience as the last 17 times.

First two rounds, not too shabby. Then the third round comes up with a terrible prompt that I think "This is a monstrous cruelty of fate and I shan't do a thing with it."

This is my first time entering screenwriting here, but bought my self Final Draft and have been muddling about with it, so I might as well give it a try.  Been trying to adapt some of my short stories from SSC and FFC and really am enjoying it.

Does anyone know how many entrants there were in last years?

Writerduet.com is a good option too, it's the one I tried and ended up buying the monthly option for the extra features.

I for one hope you do.  It's only 1.5 pages per day, call it 250 words per page.  How hard can that be?

I was using the fade in and it was fine, but when I did a try out of the final draft I liked it quite a bit more, but the Fade in was fine until I tried the other, lol.  Also there were some compatibility issues with the fade in screenplays not opening into final draft, or not transferring properly, when I was trying it out, so I did not want to do a bunch of work and then find out I could not switch to the industry standard easily later on.

From what I've heard, the industry standard thing is beginning to fade away a bit. Since there are now so many options that allow conversion to pdf, it's more a matter of who has which program for collaboration. WD will allow you to export to FD, but can only simultaneously edit with those that have WD. The thing I love about writerduet is the online storage that syncs with devices. So I can type something on my computer, then if I'm at a kid sporting tournament killing time, I can use the app on my phone. Next time I get on my comp, it's already updated. FD may have that too, I'm not sure, but it works really well for me.

I really like it, although it's definitely slower than typing on a computer. Inevitably I have scene/line ideas while I'm not near my computer, so it's handy to have mobile access when I want it. And sometimes I just use it for reading through and looking for typos or other issues.

You mean the leash / shock collar I carry around so even when I go on vacations on a different continent in a different hemisphere I am still chained to my desk?  I hear that!

I do come up with ideas that get typed out on my phone, but I use a different app for that and can refer to it once I have some screen real estate in front of me.

Your eyes must be much better than mine, Joni!  That or you're not quite as much of a hunchback yet!  Big smile

When I'm traveling I use the iPad version of Final Draft (and a keyboard/cover). It's cheap and lets me use my beloved (and space-saving) dual dialogue.

I suppose I really should sign up. I kept trying to get the discount via plugging the contest on FB or Twitter, but it hasn't worked yet.

One quick note about PDFs--proofread them. Sometimes a conversion from whatever source document you have mangles the PDF in interesting and inventive ways, like dropping the last couple of pages or repeating the entire contents of the document.

Needless to say this does not help you in competition.

To be clear, if it works for you, fine! I just can't do work on my phone. Every single time I attempt to post something on social media or here on the forums when using my phone or my mobile devices, I always have typos. For one, I can't read the tiny, tiny letters in the edit box, and the spellcheck feature on my phone/mobile devices is terrible. Also, autocorrect on my phone/mobile devices is incredibly aggressive, so I look like I'm drunk-typing when I am not.

(Which leads to speculation about the times when I am drunk-typing...)

That's why the spell-checker is so aggressive; it just assumes that's the normal mode.

I entered. I don't know how to write a screen play. I have never done one. I read people's posts in the short story comp thread about how they were so proud they enter and finish a short story. It give me a new perspective that I never knew existed. It is very intimidating for some of us to enter a comp like this. Finding this out made me want to test myself in a way I've never done before. To all those people that entered the short story comp, spent years thinking it over, and finally did it--good for it. You just got to believe in yourself.

I never wrote one before until last year, either.

Screenplays are a funny thing. They are a story (IMO) and yet they are not like a writerly story. You still need plot and action and theme, but how you put it together is far different.

The element of screenplay that was hardest for me was translating narrative to dialog and action. A screenplay is going to be what you see and hear. There is very little space for telling the viewer about something. You have to show them through sound and light.

Dialog can't be talky. It is what people say, of course, but if you watch a typical movie, the dialog is short and reactive versus long and informative.

The scenes drive the story, IMO. And those scenes don't have long set-ups. They show.

The winning screenplays sometimes will help you, and sometimes will mystify you, if you are like me when writing your first screenplay.

But let me assure you of this--you will have plenty of people here on the forums who will be glad to help you. It's seriously whack how kind these people are, and how selfless they are helping you when there is a chance your screenplay could be better than theirs in the judges' eyes.

Good luck, and take the plunge!

I gave the Short Story challenge a crack last year. Didn't make it past the first round, but learned a considerable amount. Screenwriting is more my forte, so I'm stoked to see what my prompts will be. More importantly, I'm excited to both receive detailed feedback and read everyone else's scripts. This site is exactly the powder keg of creativity that I've been missing in my life all year.

Hi,

I've signed up.
Have no idea what I'm doing of course, but have printed off NYCM's guidance and rules for screenwriting format, going to have a look at Suave's suggested software and bought a book called 'Save the Cat' by Blake Snyder.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00340ESIS/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1%20" rel="nofollow - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00340ESIS/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

So, by the time it comes around, I'll be like someone who can't cook who has bought Delia Smith's book on how to boil and egg and hopefully just follow the recipe and see what happens!

I'll probably use a few of the prompts from this challenge to do a practice run or two to see if I can translate writing prose into a screenplay.

But hey ho! No guts, no glory eh?!

Some advice re: save the cat and screenplay books in general - they're all big fans of three act, but sometimes three act is a bit much for the page limits in these comps. Definitely read it all and take the lessons on board, but don't be afraid to follow your instincts when it comes to structure.

Thanks Ed,

Coming from a tried and tested winner, I know that will be sound advice!
I've skim read a bit of it and I agree that so far, there is so much to take in and so much 'opinion' that may fly in the face of gut instinct.
I've no real idea yet how I will approach it, but may end up writing a standard story format with whatever comes and then try to translate that into a screenplay so that 'head thoughts'/'scene descriptions' etc. are done as voiceovers and whatever those bits at the start of passages are called - you know...EXT. NIGHT. A CAFE etc.
Just got the bug now, so fancied having a crack at it. I may bottle it by the time I get there as really need to practice and do LOTS of research!

Thank you for you kind advice!

Paula

My first screenplay ever was last year's comp. Key is to remember that everything in the script must be able to be seen or heard. No internal monologues. I signed up to improve my dialogue and to be more concise.

It's just a different way of telling a story. And really a ton of fun.

Thanks Lisa,

That is really good advice, thank you. (Can feel my bum cheeks twitching a bit now in fear haha!)
But you're right. I LOVED doing the SSC and as it was my first ever go at a story and really rough around the edges, I've read enough to know the judges will probably hammer me for not sticking to the genre, for telling not showing and for all my stray commas etc. I just thought, I can't leave it at that, I need to put all this wonderful feedback from the forum into practice and have another go.

Everyone on here has been so wonderfully warm and welcoming and encouraging ....and, if I were to give anyone new to any of these competitions some helpful advice, it would be to join the forum and get stuck in. The feedback is gold.

Ed, that really is so kind and also really scary!
But I mean that in the best possible way, as putting yourself out there in the first place is hard (as you will well know), but I am so grateful and would definitely value the advice from a master such as yourself and am humbled you've offered.

Thank you most sincerely once again for your generous offer.
Let's see if I have the guts to go for it once we get there!

Thanks Lisa,

That is really good advice, thank you. (Can feel my bum cheeks twitching a bit now in fear haha!)

Going to get banned from the forum now aren't I?!!

Nope, I highly doubt you'll get barred from the forum.

I find that the vast majority of folks who hang out here do have others' best interests in mind when they provide feedback, treating this place like a writers' workshop. They're smart, talented and respectful - I've learned a tremendous amount by spending time here.

Just ignore the select few who like to make themselves feel better by knocking others down. Not worth your time or aggravation.

Look forward to seeing you in Screenplay. Welcome to the party!

Gutted for you hun re: round 1 nonsense, but I do hope you get that story published!
It's still up there as my favourite and I can even quote from it....'all fibres and fingernails'! etc.

At a teachers' conference from tomorrow till Monday but after that have 2 weeks off so I'm going to try and get my head round how to write a screen play and we'll see I guess.

Really loved meeting all of you lovely people on here who are so warm and supportive!

By the way, as I'm new here (probably get in bother now!)...is it normal for so many folk to post their stories after the results are out?
There seems to be a flood now coming in, but I thought the point was to share after posting with fellow entrants to have peer reviews before judging wrapped up?

Paula, thanks as ever for the support. I'm being quoted, woohoo!

I don't know why so many folks are posting now. You do get stragglers, especially if they place (a confidence boost is the push some need, even if it's after the fact). Maybe newcomers also read that people wish they could check out more stories from heats with little forum action?

These contests are becoming highly unpredictable. With so many competitors and other variables, it's hard to know anything anymore. I'm here for the community and the kick in the ass. I'm starting to write more regularly now, so I'm chuffed.

Excellent!

I get how it's super scary, so totally understand why some gain confidence once they find they've progressed.
It is really hard to put yourself out there, like standing up naked and then someone highlighting your 'Scaramanga' issues in front of everyone!

Really pleased your writing more, I want to read EVERYTHING you write!

The feedback from my first go on here has given me more than I can express in the short time I've been here. I'll feel so much stronger for it and far more equipped for entering anything in the future!

I know I can appear overly sugary and positive, but if you ever want yet another beta, support or just an additional eye, drop me a line: paula.wescott@googlemail.com.

Much love to you sat in the right saddle for you writing your waterfalls of sunlight!

P.S. They do need to cap the entrants if they can't get results out on time.... it will all implode if not.

Hi everyone!

Just signed up for the first time ever - eeek!

I work in script development for a living and although I have a load of experience picking apart and analysing other people's scripts I have never really ever tried creating anything myself. So I may find that my career is a severe case of the Emperor's New Clothes, which is a rather scary prospect!

One question I do have for those who have entered before is how the judges score scripts? Like are there particular aspects that you have found in the past that have seriously harmed your progression in the competition that you didn't realise would be so important? I don't want to make this a box ticking exercise, but at the same time I don't want to inadvertently shoot myself in the foot either!

Thanks!!

Susie

This will be my first try at this as well.  I am just learning the technical side of the screenwriting - that is my biggest hurdle, the creativity I can handle.  From what I can gather, you are ok shooting yourself in the left foot, but stay away from the right.  Good luck!

I would say different judges have different margins of error, as opposed to different standards, when it comes to mechanical issues (proofreading, format, use of prompts). Some judges have more ambitious notions for what can be crammed into the shortest page counts than others. From what people here have said, I think we all have moments when we wonder if a particular judge read the same thing we wrote.

In short it's a lot like other legitimate contests. Confused Wink

Biggest thing (for me) is to remember this is a screenplay and not a stage play. That is, you need to be sure that this is visual and active. Dialog, of course, carries it, but long speechifying might not be useful.

BUT I have never progressed past the second round, so what do I know?

Writerduet is an awesome screenwriting software that has a free version. If you get it and play around a bit, it won't take long at all to get the hang of it. It basically formats itself, and you just select dialogue, character, etc. at the top. It's really user-friendly.

As someone who wrote her first screenplay ever in last year's contest, I can relate to the format-anxiety.

It's not that bad once you get the hang of it. Remember to not have any big bulky blocks of text and what you write needs to be seen or heard (no internal monologues).  Otherwise I look at it as just a different way of telling a story. I still outline the same way I would for a short story, still have the same challenges in staying to word count/page count. Know that sometimes editing one word can make all the difference for page counts.

I've used Amazon Storywriter for the comps I've done here so far, and it's really easy.

You'll be fine - just write and have fun. And welcome to the party.

+1 on Lisa's comment about word count. Make *every word* count. Because of formatting restrictions, you have much less space to spill out your thoughts. Five or six words per line, and something that goes over four lines looks really huge.

But - you can also ask for help! There are plenty of people here who can offer you assistance in formatting, structure, dialog, beta reading, and so on. Just ask!

Hey, I'm freaked out too as never done this before either, but these folks above; the wonderful Lisa, Verna, Steven, Ed, Tim and the like are all big hitters and all just great great givers.

I have been seriously procrastinating over getting my butt in gear to work out how to write a screenplay and it's these guys here that I owe my lack of fear to now as I will just plan a story and then work out how to get it right for screenplay.

As a naturally overly-verbose person, (moi?!) I'll need to work out how to work smarter and shorter in the more visual aspect I think, but plan to give the Amazon software a bash and am hoping Vernacula's post earlier about 'being prepared to fall in love' is true! Still have a sneaking suspicion that b****** monster Political Satire is winging its way towards me though!! Shudder! I don't even understand Brexit and I live here in the UK! At least I voted to remain so can sit smugly when it all collapses around us!

Love, respect and thanks to all

Me too! This is the best advice I got on screenwriting - imagine you are sitting with a blind friend watching a movie. You are explaining everything in real time to the person as it happens. Since you don't have a lot of time, you are only going to include the things that matter. Obviously in writing you will include a bit more than this (setting the scene is important too), but keeping this in mind while writing/editing can really help trim out the words that don't impact the story.

Hey Maryanna,

This is the guidance from NYCM on how to write a screenplay (below link), but if you've entered, you won't get your actual assignment with prompts until 11.59pm New York time, Friday night....whatever that transcribes to you as wherever you live. For me, it will be 5am UK time Saturday 21st, so I can go to bed early and get up early. USA friends will have to stay up late and Aussie friends will have a hell of a time deciding whether to sleep or not! Hope that helps!

I've registered! I've never written a screenplay before and haven't written ANYTHING at all in a while. It just never seems to be a priority at the moment, which is sad...
I am hoping that the strict time constraints and 'rules' with the surprise genre etc. will get my creative juices flowing! I don't mind at all if I don't get past the first round as long as it gets me writing again!

Our 'adopted Mums and Dads' on here will help us Suave, don't worry! Just shout if you need help!

Haha, I look forward to the challenge of going where no Suave has gone before!

Still have a sneaking suspicion that b****** monster Political Satire is winging its way towards me though!! Shudder! I don't even understand Brexit and I live here in the UK! At least I voted to remain so can sit smugly when it all collapses around us!

Love, respect and thanks to all

I've been hoping for political satire for 8 years now and have never received it in any comp here - so you'd be unlucky.

HOPING?!! OMG Darren , you must be a complete masochist!!

Welcome to the party! :) The time crunch and specific parameters do wonders for jump-starting your writing. And there's a great supportive community here if you need help.

iN. aGAIN. i WAS TRYING TO PRETEND i WASN'T JITTERY, FREAKING OUT, ANTICIPATING, then I typed this in capslock (sorry). Because the Short Story Challenge was, to me, a "reality check." So I did not want to care anymore.

And then the emails came. And the tweets. Facebook posts. Reminding me I'd registered.

Now, of course, I think about it. And in the next 24 hours, I'll go from "thinking about it" to "pretending I REALLY don't care" to "obsessing" to "not sleeping because f**k sleep".

And I'll enjoy it.

Again.

*sigh*

Cheers and good luck everyone! LOL

It's those "reality checks" that make us fight harder and relish the victories even more.

And welcome back. Good to see you here.

Yay! Excellent!

I went on a middle management course about 15 years ago based on Stephen Covey's '7 Habits of Highly Effective People' and one of the things discussed was shifting paradigms and it really stayed with me. For example how, before Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute mile, no-one believed it was physically possible, but after he broke it, so did 100s of others.....

It really helped me in any venture I set out on in thinking, someone else has done this before me, so even though I know nothing, I am going to believe 'I can.'

Wait now for me to bomb spectacularly this week haha!
So, great you have decided to join in and welcome to the fear fest lots of us are having about it too!

Paula x

Oh, and so pleased you've brought the wine!

I'm in too. I've participated in the Short Story competition the last four years, Flash Fiction was new to me last year, now this. This'll be the biggest challenge since I've never really done a screenplay. Don't figure I'll get through the first round, but hey, who knows? I'll definitely learn something, at any rate.

Oh, it's gonna be fun!!!

(I'm doing this and fiction war in the same weekend. I think I need a 12 step program for writing comps...)

You'll be great! Remember, it's really just a different way of telling a story.

Find scripts of films you like and have the right vibe for your brief. I always use them when I get stuck or confused on formatting :)
