Whoops, forgot the title: The Gathering
Synopsis: A young girl learns to trust her instincts.

Cutting this one down from 1906 was harder than most cuts I've made in the past. I miss the slower pacing and backstory of the longer version, but overall, I think I'm happy with this one, kind of, we'll see, oh dear. . .
The Way Home Henry thinks taking home a branch from the locally cursed tree will prove himself to the other boys, but with help from his sister, Hazel, he discovers he’s got nothing left to prove.

Group 1: Ghost story, a forest, a saw
Waiting Shadows Brief Synopsis: Emma stares outside at the raging blizzard and prays for her husband’s safe return from his hunting trip. Unfortunately, an unwanted guest shows up instead.
This one is...I don't know. I just wasn't in the mood to write a ghost story, lol. But I still had fun with it. So hopefully others will too. Great job surviving yet another insane round, everyone! Eager to see what you came up with!

So, I will readily admit that I think getting a 14 for comedy (neither my genre of choice nor in my wheelhouse) has given me a big head. This resulted in a comedic sci-fi...totally not my norm! I know there's a couple other Group 4 people posting, so sorry I'm a little late to the party. Which is par for the course for me since I had nixie and jen doing beta reads for me at 10 last night lol. Thank you so much ladies! Your feedback has been invaluable! But now to the task at hand:

I found I could come up with quite a few reasons for being in a garbage truck; the hardest part was making it a mystery! BLARGH! It was a fun ride. Hope it's not over quite yet. Good luck to everyone!

YES!!! I completely agree! Funny on command is hard enough… but also "be funny in a way that some random judge that you don't know will think it is funny" is even worse. Even if you know how to make your friends laugh - it's really hard to be universally funny. Even comedians know their audience to some extent…
And I can't wait to see what you all came up with either… glad there seem to be a good number of Group 8ers on the forums. Only three from my last group (including myself) posted in the forums.

Not really - you send your fiction to journals or publishers that know the genre that you write in… and you know your audience. NYC Midnight is random judges assigned to judge stories written to random prompts, and writers assigned to genres they may or may not usually write in.
If I wanted to publish my comedy (HA!), I'd look for a journal that specialized in that sort of story. The people that bought the journal would know the types of story they publish and be the right audience for your story - otherwise it wouldn't be chosen.
You generally have some idea of your audience when you publish. If you're really lucky, then people outside of your intended audience will also enjoy what you've written.
I don't generally write comedy. I don't generally read comedy either. So… let's just say I googled as many "how to write comedy" essays as I did "vintage clothing store" images… probably even more "how to's" actually.

My sister is a comedian. She started with improv classes and then joined a comedy troupe (UCB). You can find classes all over. I think improv would be a great way to test the comedy waters. If you can do that in front of people, you can write it (because you already know how to write well). She also does stand up --- but that's a totally different bird.

Would we be allowed to make like a master thread of links to all the posted stories? Something like this
Group 1 Link to story a thread. Link to story b thread.
Group 2 Link to story a thread.
Ect. Or would this be against the forum rules? |
Cant imagine why they would object
