I'm not sure, but I've been watching for someone to start up a discussion about all things SSC 2015 related in the meantime.

MIGILLA:  When does the sub-forum get created?

The sub-forum is created when the first confirmations go out 72 hours after the first deadline ... so like in two weeks ...

LYNN C:  I'm not sure, but I've been watching for someone to start up a discussion about all things SSC 2015 related in the meantime.

Discuss away ... that's what the "creative writing corner" is for ... the sub-forum is supposedly just for posting your entry under its own topic and then getting direct feedback.  All other topics and questions should be out here ...

I said that when I signed up for this one myself. But I enjoy the way having to respond to the challenge makes me push myself, even last year when I drew a really awful combination (for me, anyway) in the first round.

I'm in. I'm excited, but also a little nervous, because I got really used to the format in the flash comp...not sure how I will do with the new parameters. As a rule, I write pretty short. The flash is a perfect length for me! Plus, the weekend timeline seemed to really work (12 hours googling the assignment components and freaking out, twelve hours writing, twelve hours editing/obsessing...and 12 hours sleeping, in between).

Newbie here... Just signed up for the SSC2015 and looking forward to it. Not quite sure what to expect, but I'm sure it will be a fun ride!

Anyone have any helpful tips on using the forums and sub-forums to get the most out of this experience?

Cheers,
PLK

Come on in - just for old time's sake :)

I'm in too, not sure why I keep doing it, apart from being an addict like Patsy, but the idea of a deadline going by without making it is just too much for me.

And now I'm in - guess what?  I'm excited too! Remind me of that next week someone, when I'm gnashing my teeth and pulling my hair and saying I'm never going to do it again...........

Round 1 usually has around 1,000 writers. I think last year's SSC had around 960.

WOW! 1440 (plus or minus) competitors in Round One ... 48 groups ... better odds that last time when they had the usual number of groups with more competitors ... now it's around 30 in a group ... odds of 6 to 1.

Poor Patz ... you're like me and Rom Coms ... three in a row that time ...

I got suspense and an interesting character and object this time.

Why don't you do a really offbeat variety of ghost ... non traditional ... or go a bit Harry Potter and do the John Cleese one with his head hanging on by a bit of sinew ... bad executioner.

Break a leg ... make sure autosave is on ...

Oh crap, you got the one with the potential to be really disturbing - medical tourism is when people travel to another country for health care, either because it's cheaper or for some procedure which isn't legal in their own country.

Nope, don't wanna switch, thanks. Wink You might check Snopes for inspiration, though.

Well, class of 2007 present and accounted for. I gave in at the 11th hour and signed up only to get
ghost story AGAIN! Pretty soon I'll have a whole book to publish from this contest alone!

Group 16
Ghost story
A life boat
A bride

How cliche can you get?  Something wicked this way comes, I think....

Ok so not a bad genre.

Genre crime caper

Subject food competition

Character publicist

I'm stuck on publicist. How exactly can that be interpreted without getting completely off topic. There are several definitions for the word.

I have the worst writer's block right now. While a lot less difficult than horror or sci fi still tricky. I have no experience with crime capers and starting to freak out slightly.

My first time at this rodeo! Not really feeling my assignment.

Heat 38: Drama, Cancer-Survivor, Called-Off Wedding.

I'm letting this work it's way through my mind. I don't want to go for a boring, easy interpretation. So I think I'm going to spend the day just brainstorming some synopses and try writing a few paragraphs this evening.

This is much harder than I thought it'd be. Good luck to you all!

Subject: A lifeboat
Character: A bride

I'm new to this and just wanted to pick the brains of those that are regulars. With the subject, it says it has to be integral to the story. Now how I'm interpreting this is that in my case, a lifeboat, doesn't have to be the setting or even main backdrop to the story, it just has to play a vital role in the story. Have I got the right idea or am I way off the mark?

Hi Gill!  Ticket Scalping is when someone buys a bunch of tickets for a popular event, and then tries to sell them at a higher cost, usually outside the venue.  Sometimes it works, and sometimes they lose their shirt!!

Hi Freckles,

I did urban fantasy for "fantasy" in last year's Flash contest, and I got a 15 for it---go for it.

Wow!  15!  Congratulations.  I'm drawing a blank, but that always is the way I start out.  Good luck in the contest fsenese, and everyone else reading this!  I'll be checking out everyone's progress as we go along.  I might just go get some steak and eggs and come back to the contest after that.  Time to think and enjoy that initial creative dreaming part of this.  I absolutely love this contest.

Hi everyone. Nice to see u guys again.
Group 14 - RomCom - Buying a home - A university professor

I like it, maybe because I instantly got ideas flowing when I read it last night. But, my 1st round in Flash was also RomCom and it is tough to get readers to smile, let alone laugh.
Anyway, I hope the long deadline is not counterproductive.
Good luck, my fellow...whatever it is we are. Looking forward to these late night forums. The writer's café.

Think Oceans 11, only as a comedy of errors - Oceans 11 as starring the cast of Community or Parks & Recreation.

So I got group 11: Comedy, Best friends, A plastic surgeon.

This is the 2nd worst topic I could have got out of all 48 heats. I know this because I whiningly went through all of them just so that I could say that.

I'm really stumped. My only comedic reading (ever) is stuff like Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams. And I just don't feel like I have a very comedic soul :P

And 'Best Friends'?! How utterly utterly mundane.

*SIGH*

I'm stuck on publicist. How exactly can that be interpreted without getting completely off topic. There are several definitions for the word.

I have the worst writer's block right now. While a lot less difficult than horror or sci fi still tricky. I have no experience with crime capers and starting to freak out slightly.

Lol. You've obviously never had, never dealt with or never been a publicist. Slimy little creatures, all of them. Whoever it was that cited Oceans 11 indeed offered up a great example for you to look at. Good luck.

Hey Corrie,

I'm in your group and had much the same reaction. I think it wouldn't be a bad prompt except for the "comedy". Comedy and political satire have knocked me out of NYC Midnight twice now, in the very first round; the first Flash contest I did last year didn't have either, and I made it all the way to #7 in the final round!

I think that heat 10 is the least inspiring: Romance, Gluten free, a single mother - that's the only one that would have been worse.

Yours was pretty high-up on my suck list too though (together with heat 28) - but at least I work in web dev and would have had something to work with there...

I guess I'm with the others in being a little confused by your dismay for what you were given to work with. I can see so much potential for sidesplitting visual narrative with your group elements... the first thing that sprang to mind was two BFFs who want to have plastic surgery to look like their favorite superstar, but they don't have a lot of money, so they end up at a cut-rate (pun intended) plastic surgeon. Instead of making them look like Miley Cyrus, he makes them look like the Queen of England... or worse, Camilla Parker-Bowles... something along those lines. And if you emulated Douglas Adams in the process, well I think it could be hysterically funny. Just my two cents worth, though. I guess I see more in it than you do.

Every time I try to write comedy it comes out as horror. Which is why I have just come up with a fabulous idea involving best friends and plastic surgery. Which *I* think is hilarious. But.

Perhaps you could make a case for black comedy.

Yes, yes it is. The worst. I even had to look up what 'gluten' was.

I also seem to be one of the few males in this heat which is going to make Romance/Single Mother extra hard. (I have no kids and eat everything, LOL)

I want to sympathize with everyone's plight, but let me reiterate my previous post - political flippin' satire! So, if you are feeling down or stressed remind yourself you aren't me and be thankful! 😆
Let's all just relax a bit, stretch, crack our knuckles and remember - writer's write! We can do this! Ok, cheerleading over, I'm off to read (again!) the definition of Political Satire. Good luck!

This has concerned me, also. I really got into a groove with the 48-hour thing. The 8 days will likely lull me into a false sense of security...

(still stuck on the whole foreign exchange student thing...I think I could have dealt with "comedy" and "web designer" MUCH easier if the subject wasn't so damn obscure. PS, have I mentioned that I am incredibly NOT world-wise? I have done pretty much zero travelling, never been out of my time zone. Research skills will totally be pressed into service with this one...)

I think I'm feeling the most sympathy for people who either have political satire (unless of course that's their thing) or the poor people in group 27 who have the nice prompts of mystery and scavenger hunt to start with, but then have "fast food restaurant" as their CHARACTER! Ermm

I'm getting into the groove with my ghost story now... I think. We'll see what happens when I actually try to get my ideas into story form. Tongue

But I'm definitely looking forward to reading some of the ideas from these crazy prompt combinations! Good luck to everyone! Beer

Freckles - I really miss the small window.  I'm a procrastinator by nature and already I can feel myself putting everything off.  I've got a title and synopsis and that's it. lol. I'm terrible.  I keep telling myself I need to start writing but then I get distracted @__@

Corrie - There's a reddit thread about cultural misunderstandings, might be worth a look: http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/vs9xx/immigrant_redditors_any_funny_culture_shock/

plkphoto - Wow I didn't even realize a group had a restaurant as their character.  What the heck.  I really hope somebody goes all out and make it fully sentient, like an autobot but instead a Mcd's or something lol

Hey! So this is my first time doing the Short Story Challenge. Normally I stick to Flash.

Anyway, Heat 2, Action/Adventure, Ocean Rescue, Dentist.

My first thought was Finding Nemo. ha!

Everything I can think of after just seems cheesy, and I know very little about dentistry . . . and ocean rescue. ugh.

Right now pretty much every other assignment looks better to me -- except maybe political satire, maybe. . .

Things come to mind as I read other people's assignments. . . but mine might end up a flat out comedy if I'm not careful at this rate.

Words written. 0

At least I've got a week on this one! lol
