    Posted: 25 Jul 2006 at 2:21am

I don't know if I'm just extremely naive or overly optimistic, but I think I'd like to share my script with anyone interested in the hopes of getting any feedback people are willing to offer.

I entered the competition primarily for the purposes of learning. I've only been writing since April of this year and I realize that I have a lot to learn. Over the years, I've also come to understand that I learn faster through my peers.

That being said, I'm going to touch up a few typos this evening and register the script through WGA (just in case). After that, I'd love to share the script with anyone who's interested. I'd also be more than happy to provide feedback on your stories as well.

Also, if people think I'm completely crazy with trying to share a script before submitting it, someone please give me a clue. I'm an engineer by trade and my life is predicated on sharing information with people who can benefit from it and/or help me. I just thought I'd give it a shot in here.

Plus, if someone reads it and thinks that I've completely missed the mark in terms of genre and topic, I'll have a few days to come up with something else.

Hope everyone is having good luck with their stories. Thanks in advance.

Toby

Honestly Toby, I don't think you should show it here before submitting. We all really don't know each other and while it would be nice if we'd all have great sportsmanship and only give constructive criticism, it's entirely possible that you could get some undeserved feeback from a competitor that may affect you as a new writer.  There are some not so nice people on the internets...

There are other message boards...google 'em ... send the script to someone there for feedback but I definitely advise you not to offer it up to your competitors!

Toby,

I respectfully disagree with Barbara.  I think it is a great idea to share your script and get as much feedback as possible, especially if you are a beginning writer.

I seriously doubt anyone who volunteers to read your script would have any malicious intent and the benefits of that feedback could be invaluable.  Most of us are here to learn and sharing with each other is the best way.

Chris

I agree with Chris.  I am cynical when it comes to the rest of the world, but not so when dealing with folks wanting to be writers.

I would not ever mind giving advice to someone - even if it helps them beat me in my heat.

I'd share it with people not in the contest unless you implicitly trust someone in the contest. I personally know 3 contest writers and I'd share my script with any of them, but not with anyone else who I do not know outside this contest.

It is simple to verify what genre/topic whoever is going to be reading/commenting your script has drawn.  Perhaps a middle ground would be to solicit comments for anyone not in your heat.  If a malicious person or two would happen to comment back with bad advice, you'd be able to view that in light of the comments you receive from others whom, I believe, for the most part would be helpful and honest.

I know that myself, as soon as I finish something I want someone to read it but finding friends familiar with what makes a good screenplay is normally difficult - for me at least.

Call me a cynic -- Embarrassed

Honestly I think it's great to get feedback, and I would provide some myself except that it looks like I won't get my own submission done until the last minute. But I've had some experiences with somewhat creepy people on the internets so I admit my judgment is clouded a bit. Everyone on these boards seems great, but still....

I mean, for all you guys know I could be typing from an asylum right now and everyone around me has told me never to write anything again.

(ok that's not true)

I'd help... but I think I really should focus on making my own script before helping other people!

I'm on the line on this one.

I agree feedback is good and helpful and I do believe a lot of the posters on this site are trustworthy - it's the lurkers I worry about - lol,

but,

giving basic help and assistance is good, but I think that maybe by reading the entries prior to the deadline is kinda taking away from the spirit of the competition -

but then again do what you want I don't care - lol

Toby, let me know when you hear back from the copywrite office - I'd be glad to read it if you want my whacky opinion.
