Does anybody have a system for picking what to read?

So far I start like this

1) Group mates
2) People writing the same genre
3) People I exchanged reads with in other competitions even if not writing same genre this time, if I can find their story (this list as a few extra people in that I grabbed via Author Archive during last round of Flash)

But I often end up worrying/feeling like I need to justify "why did I turn up here" especially as I tend to have questioning elements even in things I really liked reading

I guess it might be easier if I joined in Beta reading (I do Beta with a group of people I know from another hobby, who all write, but not all actually enter, and thus don't use forums)

I return the favour by reading and commenting on those readers/writers kind enough to do the same for me. Heatmates definitely, but after that, what I like to read. I must admit I have a Nietzchean fondness for titles—other than that, no real strategy each time.

I should try title choosing. I hate making them up so much I think that it puts me off using that to choose!

Usually I do:
-Groupmates
-Return reads
-Beta/writing group buddies
-Interesting titles
I also like to find some that haven't gotten many comments and bump them back to the top.

Right now, not a lot of group foes mates' work to read, so I am reading interesting titles, and genres I think I'd suck at to see what other people are doing with them. Lotta great stuff, everyone!

Mine usually goes:
1) Groupmates
2) Return Reads
3) Beta people
4) Groups with interesting prompts
5) Interesting titles
6) Names I recognize from other comps/feedback exchanges. There are a few people who consistently wow the socks off me and also a lot who give great feedback.

For the worry about "Why did I show up here" I don't think I've ever wondered why someone has left a comment on my stories - so many people pop in and out, and my own habits for picking stories are so all over the place, it never crosses my mind. One comp, I literally clicked on the most recent posts when I had a few spare minutes at work.
