NYCM has unleashed the newest challenge:

Rhyming Story Challenge

Eight days to write an original 600-word story that rhymes.

###

I'm not sure about this one, but I'll probably I'll give it a go.

Yeah very unsure about this. I'm not really sure they've differentiated between a rhyming story and an epic poem. Like Beowulf is definitely a poem but it clearly has a plot too...

I'm psyched. This sounds absolutely absurd. Also, the temptation to compete in an inaugural challenge is hard to resist LOL The only thing is that 600 words seems LONG to maintain a rhyming scheme. I'm excited to see where it forces my brain to wander, though!

Epic poetry traditionally doesn't have to rhyme :) In fact, the earliest epic poems, including Beowulf, didn't.

I imagine they essentially mean a ballad (think "The Cremation of Sam McGee"), but they don't want to limit the rhyme scheme and meter to a standard ballad.

Personally I'm undecided, but I love poetry and I'm pretty drawn to the idea

Which is probably why I'll end up registering, even though I'm on vacation the first week. LOL

This seems right up some of your guy’s alley…who wrote the 2nd place flash as a poem?

The FAQ mention Edgar Allen Poe and I did think of The Raven.

Definitely giving this a go!

I wrote my 2nd place R2 Micro as a poem, though it didn't rhyme--I know someone who wrote their entire 1,000-word Flash piece as a poem, too (also free-verse), so I'm stoked to see how that one places this week. It's an incredible story.

600 words is a lot
certainly enough for a plot
making it rhyme
will take me more time
but I think I will give it a shot

Signed up! I've never smashed the registration button so fast for an NYCM contest before; I'm normally in the habit of waiting until the very last minute LOL

Maybe it's just me but geez this seems like it would require a ton of mental energy.

I love the contests where I can crank out the story in 48 hours because it can't bleed over into my work week, but this one seems like a ton of work.
