Sorry for the late reply!  The emails were sent, but may have landed in your junk mail folder.  We can’t guarantee the email delivery which is why we also post to the website and on our Facebook and Twitter pages.  It is included below for your reference.  Sorry again for the delay responding and good luck!

The final round of the Short Story Challenge 2018 is officially underway!

The final assignment of the competition is:

Genre: Open
Subject: Altruism
Character: An actress

Please make sure to read the entire e-mail below before getting started as it contains some very important reminders.  Best of luck to everyone over the next 24 hours!

Genre, Subject, and Character Assignments
Feel free to interpret your genre, subject, and character assignment in uniquely creative ways...we're looking for interesting and inventive stories. But also know that we won't be able to accept submissions that are completely off the assignments you are given.

With the Open genre, you may write your story in any genre(s) of your choosing.

The assigned subject must be integral to the plot of your story.  If the assigned subject barely makes an appearance and isn't relevant to the story, then it will most likely be disqualified.

The assigned character must be a relevant character in the story, but does not have to be the main character.  If the character is mentioned in passing and/or has no relevance to the story at all, you will run the risk of being disqualified.

Final Round Submission Deadline & Submitting Your Story
All Final Round stories must be uploaded by the submission deadline. The deadline is 11:59PM EDT on Saturday, May 12th (in exactly 1 day or 24 hours from the time this e-mail was sent).

When you are ready to upload your story, click here.  You will be guided through a simple upload process.  There is also a countdown on challenge home page to help you keep track of how much time is left before the deadline.

Give Yourself a Few Minutes:  The upload process takes a few minutes to complete so make sure to leave yourself a little time rather than waiting until the final minute before the deadline.  We use Submittable.com for our upload process, so you will be asked to create a username and password if you have never used it before.

Confirmation Emails:  After you upload your story, you should land on an upload success page in addition to receiving an immediate email stating that we have received your submission.  If you do NOT receive an immediate confirmation e-mail and/or land on the upload success page, your submission may not have gone through and we suggest uploading again.  Please check your junk mail folder for the confirmation email as well.

Found a typo after submitting?  No problem, submit as many times as you like before the deadline.  If you find a typo after submitting and would like to submit a revised version, you mayresubmit as many times as you like until the deadline.  We take the latest upload before the deadline for judging.

Important Format Reminders
ELECTRONIC FILE – The Short Story must be sent as a .doc (Word document 97-2003), .docx (Word document), .txt (Text File) or .rtf (Rich Text Format). The name of the file must be the title of your story. For example, if the title of your Short Story was “Tennis”, then the name of your Short Story must be saved as “Tennis.doc” or “Tennis.txt”.

FONT - Each individual Short Story must be typed in 12 point and in Courier, New Courier or Times New Roman typeface – ONLY.

TITLE PAGE - The Title Page of the Short Story must only contain the TITLE of the Short Story and the BRIEF SYNOPSIS.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS - The brief synopsis must be a maximum of 2 sentences and a minimum of 1 sentence (and no longer than one-half page in length). The brief synopsis serves as a description of the Short Story.

ANONYMITY - The author’s name must NOT appear anywhere in the Short Story, including the title page.

LENGTH - The maximum length of each individual story in the third and final round is 1,500 words. The title page is not included in the word count and there is no minimum number of words.

SPACING - There are no rules regarding spacing your stories, so you are free to space them however you like.   But, keep in mind that anything more than double-spaced may not make for the best reading experience for the judges.
