My assignment was Fantasy / Shoe store / Pancakes, which wasn't awful.

Looking at them all for this question, I found quite a number that I would have liked:

HFic - Bookstore - Floodlight
HFic - Bicycle repair shop - Blank check
HFic - Bank vault - Spear
Ghost - Aquarium - Bottle of champagne
Ghost - Tunnel - Trumpet
Mystery - Cruise ship - High heels
Mystery - Poker game - Tongs
Thriller - Hotel conference room - Broken clock
RomCom- Private investigator's office - Rowboat
PolSat - Liquor store - Flip chart
PolSat - Graveyard - Measuring tape
Comedy - Wedding - Oven mitt
SF - Eye doctor's office - 3D printer

And a few that would have made me poke my eyes out:

PolSat - South Pole - Phone charger (WTF?)
Act/Adv - Cage - Tea bag
Fantasy - Space shuttle - Can of paint

The fantasy/space shuttle had me scratching my head, because that level of technology makes it SCI FI.

And omg what kind of adventures are you going to have IN A CAGE.

I think I'm gonna go read some attempts right now.

Not necessarily. Many books, stories, video games and movies blend sci-fi and fantasy in various ways. As a very famous example, Star Wars is a hybrid. I would contend it is more fantasy than sci-fi (though I have never been a fan of the series and am far from an expert). There are plenty of ways it could have stayed in the same universe but shifted even harder into fantasy mode. There are plenty of ways other authors have merged the genres or taken one genre and moved it into setting which historically fit with the other genre. Technology alone doesn’t make something sci-fi.

oh my gosh, I think the South pole - phone charger - political satire could have been so fun to write.  I think the RomCom - PI Office - Rowboat combo would have really been quite the head scratcher for me to figure out.
